Aung San Suu Kyi sentenced to four years in prison at court hearing

The Myanmar Court has ruled to sentence the country’s civilian leader Aung San Suu Kyi to four years in prison in an initial verdict today, December 6th, on charges of incitement and violating Covid-19 restrictions.

The verdict of the Myanmar Court was the first conviction against Aung San Suu Kyi, the former Prime Minister and the leader of the National League for Democracy (NLD) party, after the Myanmar military coup took power from the ruling government on February 1st of this year.

Suu Kyi, who has been “detained” by the military for 10 months, was also facing several charges, including corruption, violating Covid-19 pandemic restrictions during the 2020 election campaign, incitement, illegally importing and possessing walkie talkies, and breaking the Official Secrets Act.

If she was found guilty in all the cases mentioned, she could be sentenced to more than 100 years in prison. However, the NLD leader has rejected all of the allegations.

Although Suu Kyi, the de facto leader of Myanmar and Nobel Peace Prize winner, will be detained, a large group of Myanmar anti-coup people continued to stage rallies against their military government on public roads across the country in the midst of what they call a brutal suppression by the Myanmar Army. At least 2,000 people have reportedly died in the aftermath of a coup d’état since February.

The reaction to the ruling online from social media users was swift and negative, calling the ruling “unfair” and a “farce”, amongst many other negative forms of feedback.

Balancing maintaining democracy with having to accede to requests with the military gun to her head?

I don't think so. Had she spoken up, this would just have happened sooner.

Agreed however she would have stood up for right with the same outcome. I don't doubt she is admired by violent Buddhists if that isn't an oxymoron.

The dozen or so real democracies where the Head of State is chosen democratically are failing to stand up to China, Russia, Arab and Asian dictators.

So it is not just Aung it also the leaders of these representative republics USA Portugal Swiss Italian France Ireland Germany Korea and Finland Austria , there are semi democratic places like Indonesia, Japan, Hungary Poland UK Belgium that also follow US lead and kow tow because it is too late to stop the Chinese model other than a a brutal possibly nuclear war.

The problem here is that impunity is becoming the norm and we are heading globally and Asia wide more like Chinese dictatorship than Swiss freedoms.

She asked or and received support from many based on being a human rights leader in Myanmar . . . she failed miserably, turning out to be exactly the opposite.

She'd have lost her post and maybe been jailed, but at least that would have kept the world on her side - this way hardly anyone cares, rightfully so.

Something odd you seem to be chanelling my thoughts, are you thinking about bacon and egg and an espresso too perhaps we are remotely moderated, to be fair Harry's point is a good one , but for the wretched poor Buddhist Mon Birman majority, utterly fecked Kachin, Christian Karens and Royhinghyas they're stuffed, while there are brutal drug warlords the Shan people do have the nuts on some valuable drugs supplies, f only there was an utterly corrupt military neighbour to export them out of Slyam.

Most of SE Asia exists on a knife edge of barely functioning "democracy" one minute and then military dictatorship the next, been that way for more than the 50-80 years they've been trying out democracy post colonial era. The difference in the last 20 years is the cash washing out of China to buy influence and secure resources both mineral and agricultural.

I guess if Chuck Windsor were to start a party and gain a majority as an elected for lief only hegemony like Emperor etc , like a Boukassa or Napoleon. However few other than the largest hoors are actively seeking.

    KiNG WILLY
Most evolved societies eschew rule by DNA or have merely decorative anachronisms like LUX Danmark and Malaysia to assange the dinosaurs.

IMHO it is a matter for the Poms how they run England but I am amazed that freed convicts intermarried with natives and assorted immigrants would wish to bow and courtesy to Camilla and the like in the 21st century.

However never under estimate how ill informed people are in the antipodes , they allow Kiwis free range, choose SCOMO as their leader and are under the impression that lamingtons are food.

You do post a lot of shite and therefore can be discounted by anyone whose IQ has managed to spill over into double figures but Lamington shaming is absolute blasphemy in Oz and should you make such an utterance to an Australian you would get a bloody good thonging, especially in Sydney where the less.. err.. socially elite abound.
As you are obviously a retard not to know this, please see the video explanation of thonging. BTW would the thonging recipient perchance be a relative of yours? it would help explain your posting err.. style.

Thanks for the heads up Sherluck , play the man if you can't play the ball. Clies "o" Vaucluse to work on, Double bay we don't eat Lamington's when there, just Greek or French food or yabbies if to be had, Most strine "cuisne" is cehap filler for spotty sporty okkers and their aherm "sheilas", In France beetroot is mainly animal feed.

I visited a houso development once in Fassifern near Toronto once it was similar TD full of bogans

As to the nub of course Aung has been martyred by a nasty vicious junta the way the settlers and freed convicts treat the first nations and TSI , when I was in QFL only 17 years ago the largest cause of death of native males was in cop cells or beaten /liked while interacting with an almost entirely white Police Force, USA Ireland UK little better.

I hope a lamington is sufficient solace for embracing Van Diemen's Land and failing to escape when it was still possible. Many of my friends here late great JJ et al left Oz with like me no intention of returning, As a white ale I was invisible the way my Thai wife was treated taught me the lesson.

Quite hard to understand your pigeon English. (unkind comment on vaucluse deleted).
I am unable to fathom what "Aung" and being in the Queensland football league has to do with Aboriginals in police cells, but you of course are wrong regarding your statistic. 65% of aboriginals die from health related causes. Most violence in aboriginal communities is caused between aboriginals. Aboriginal woman are 35 times more likely to be hospitalised by domestic violence than non indigenous women.
It certainly is a shame if your wife was discriminated against in QLD all those years ago. I must admit coming from Melbourne to QLD over 20 years ago there was an appearance of less acceptance from some strangers but I put that down to marriage to an Asian partner was much more a rarity in QLD than Melbourne or Sydney.
In Melbourne many Australians of Asian ancestry can trace their Australian history back further than many Australians of european/british ancestory. There were many children of asian ancestory at my school so for people in my sphere it was not out of the ordinary to have asian friends and that was in the 60s.

It's quite well known that deaths in custody in Qld were not a rarity in the times of and before Joh and Flo.

It is indeed very beautiful bit like here just shame about the racism, and I apologise for my comments about Lamingtons I didn't realize it was so crucial.

Takes you by surprise when friendly people, who are nice and open their home to you, turns out to be.....primitives.

Good to be white in Queensland back then

Can't be bothered to google it
