5 dead after Myanmar security forces ram car into Yangon protest

So would the West be wrong to wade in and depose this junta? Or is 1300 murdered protestors not enough?

Certainly none of the leaders nearby will do anything as it might make their own situations look precarious.

And China of course could intervene but won't. Can't go knocking fellow authoritarians, can we?

Five people were killed and at least 15 arrested after Myanmar security forces in a car rammed into an anti-coup protest on Sunday morning in Yangon, local news portal Myanmar Now reported.
Witnesses on the scene told Reuters dozens had been injured. Photos and videos on social media show a vehicle that crashed through the protesters and bodies lying on the road.
Another protest was held in Yangon in the afternoon despite the morning violence.
Anti-military protests are continuing despite the killing of more than 1,300 people since the Feb 1 coup. The scattered protests are often small groups voicing opposition to the overthrow of an elected government led by Nobel laureate Aung San Suu Kyi and the return of military rule.

I've never understood the mechanism whereby the military in countries like this are a force independent of government. This simply could not happen in many other countries.

Why 'the West'? It's a 'damned if you do, damned if you don't' scenario . . . just look at what Auung did when she finally got into power, due to a great extent with help from 'the West' . . . she helped trample human rights with vigour.

Nearest big neighbours . . . China an India. Their sphere of influence.

^^ Well, yeah....in Myanmar they are, but countries like Thailand, where they seem to run parallel in power, even when there is a civilian government.

Did she do anything actively against them ? I didn't follow it closely, but got the impression that she (perhaps unwillingly) felt obliged to turn a blind eye because of popular sentiment against them or because of the military.

Whatever happened she certainly lost the plot, after many years of expressing her right to freedom, she denied the freedom and human rights of many thousands.

So, in your mind it'd be 'helping the woman' . . .

Interesting concept when thousands have died . . . and she's not been one of them.

Not really. The Military allow a bit of sham democracy on the basis that it doesn't interfere with their money train. First sign of trouble and Boom! - there's another coup.

I think you're right on this one. She was very much aware that a certain amount of "following orders" was required to stop the military doing what they've ultimately done anyway.

I feel that, on the Rohingya issue, she wasn't speaking or acting for herself.

Yeah, I don't think she did anything of the kind. The military have been running the country all along, overtly or with the implicit threat of a coup.

Harry I'm sure she could of walked away, and expressed her utter contempt for the military, though choose to do nothing.

Then again, have the western allied forces been arming the rebels? nah most probably made a deal with the Chinese.

It's a lost cause..... Everything is so fucked up, it would take 2-3 generations to change the political culture.

She was the first semblance of democracy that they have had in 50 years of military rule. Walking away would have caused it to collapse. The fact that it did anyway is a sign of how desperate they are to cling onto power.

And ended seen as part of the military power house.

Well at least the Chinese are supplying the rebels with arms, more than what the west is doing.

I have no idea what you are on about, really. Where do you get this shit? Maybe you got confused about them sending "shots"...

Depends if they work cheap and they smuggle them without getting caught.
