Baby Elephant Caught in Snare Trap Rescued by Park Rangers

Park rangers in eastern Thailand’s Chanthaburi province rescued a baby elephant injured after falling into a snare trap. Snares are anchored cable, wire or rope nooses set to catch wild animals.

The baby elephant was spotted in a snare trap by villagers in Khao Sip Ha Chan National Park in Kaeng Hang Maeo district in Chanthaburi. Park rangers and veterinarians from the Protected Areas Regional Office 2 moved in to save its life.

Ruamsilp Manajongprasert, directing park ranger of the office, said he mobilised park rangers and rescuers to help the baby bull elephant, aged around three months.

The little elephant had been tangled up inside a snare trap set up by wildlife poachers.

The baby elephant was moved to a park ranger station to receive treatment from veterinarians and have the rope disentangled from his feet.

A day of extra care was given to the animal before it was released back into the wild due to wounds caused by thorns in the trap.

On its Facebook account, the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation commented that snare traps made with simple tools pose a deadly threat to wildlife. This is because animals struggling to escape often end up tightening the traps and wounding themselves further.

Park rangers have been also deployed across the country to monitor and curtail the use of these life-threatening traps that are commonly found in conservation areas.

Meanwhile, police report a 54-year-old man died after being stomped to death by a wild elephant in Chanthaburi, the fifth such death this month.

According to Pol Capt Kritsakorn Kamolphob, deputy inspector in Khaeng Hang Maew police, the incident took place near the Klong Hang Maew catchment project.

According to police, the man was repeatedly stomped by the elephant, his body was sent for an autopsy. Wild elephants were also seen roaming around the site.

Due to the deaths of five villagers by wild elephants this month, the province is now also warning people to stay away from the animals because it is now the mating season. This often causes their behaviour to become erratic.

Yes, beware of rutting tuskers as the Bangkok Post once so eloquently described them.

Injured baby elephant, suffering from ten bullet wounds and being stuck in a trap, is now being treated in Pattaya

An injured baby elephant, who reportedly suffered from ten bullet wounds and being stuck in a trap in Chanthaburi is now being treated in Pattaya.

The four-month-old baby elephant was found in a national park in Chanthaburi last month by park rangers. The baby female elephant is now being treated at Nong Nooch Garden Pattaya. Park officials named her ‘Fah Sai’ (Clear sky).

Veterinarian Dej Siridmarong told The Pattaya News, “Her front left leg had sustained severe injuries from at least ten bullet wounds. Her front right leg also almost had to be amputated due to infection from a trap. We have cut off a portion of her infected leg to save her life.”

“We have pulled out one bullet from her leg while we have to conduct future operations to pull out the other bullets in the next few days. She can now walk.”

The Director of the Si Racha Office of the Department of National Parks Wildlife and Plants Conservation Mr. Ruamsin Manajongprasert told The Pattaya News, “We have filed a report to the police to find suspect who did this to the elephant, we believe illegal poachers were responsible. It is a miracle she survived.”

Fah Sai has also reportedly grown close to other elephants at the park, including one mother elephant who has reportedly adopted Fah Sai and is regaining her strength every single day, according to Nong Nooch Garden park officials.

A metaphor for the whole society trapped in the elephant ticket, well aware and sensitive to the situation yet trapped by heartless moderation. S Korea and Singapore were as undeveloped as here a century back , however I see little real effort to remove the corruption merely change the puppets to yield the illusory effability for Rural Sinur

    Rescued baby elephant finally dies
Lack of nutrients from milk led to weakened immunity
    PUBLISHED : 31 DEC 2021 AT 12:11

PATTAYA: A four-month-old elephant died late Thursday night due to lack of nutrients after being saved from severe injuries caused by a snare and bullets last month.

Phadet Siridamrong, a veterinarian at Nongnooch Garden, wrote on his Facebook page that the baby elephant, known as Phang Fasai, died at 9.45pm on Thursday after an hour-long attempt to save her life.

He said after the severe injuries, the baby elephant had responded well to treatment and gradually recovered.

However, she did not get nutrients from elephant milk. Staff at Nongnooch Garden where she received treatment tried to keep her alive until next month when two elephants at the garden would give birth and there would be enough milk for Phang Fasai.

The lack of nutrients weakened the immunity of the baby elephant and she started developing diseases in the gastrointestinal tract and digestion system. She finally died of gastrointestinal failure, Mr Phadet said.

On Nov 28, the baby elephant was rescued from a snare in a forest in Kaeng Hang Maew district of Chanthaburi.

Her left front leg was badly injured and veterinarians had to later amputate it. Besides, she sustained about 10 bullet wounds to the right front leg.

Very sad but perhaps for the best, it'd never be able to be released. More importantly what are they doing to track down the poachers and people who play the traps and shot these poor animals.
