Luxury Car Dealers Facing Tax Evasion on 854 Imported Cars

Thailand’s Department of Special Investigation is coordinating with the Department of Land Transport to enforce legal actions against 114 luxury car importers that were found to have evaded paying taxes on 854 imported cars.

Pol Lt Col Phayao Thongsen, deputy director-general of the DSI, announced at a press conference yesterday that the DSI is seeking information from the DLT on the owners of the cars imported between 2012 and 2014.

He said a total of 10 teams were assigned to collect all the information the authorities would require to initiate legal action against the car dealers, whose actions caused a loss of 2.6 billion baht in customs fees, local fees, and value-added taxes.

Pol Lt Col Phayao said that the luxury cars were imported from the United Kingdom. Adding the DSI aims to complete its investigation within four months after each team has handled 83 cars and 12-13 importers.

In addition, the Regional Special Investigations Division is reportedly investigating a tax evasion case involving 574 other luxury vehicles.

According to a DSI source, the department permitted the DLT to return 20 luxury cars that had not been taxed after the owners paid the import duty.

Is this the kit car scam or Joe Ferrari's work I wonder? (Or both).

What if it were neither? Seems they occurred 8-10 years ago.

I wonder how many of the nice cars in the Generals garages are fully tax paid?

A nice backhander will soon sort that out. About a 1/3 of the imported cars on the road haven't paid the tax.

The engine, chassis and body imported separately, then reassembled here without having to pay the 300% luxury tax.

Is it still 100% tax though?

Well the kit car scam goes back that far and I don't think Joe Ferrari earned his nickname overnight.

That is indeed the kit car scam but in many cases it's just the paperwork that said they came in in pieces and were reassembled.

I just discovered there was another scam where students are allowed to bring in their second hand vehicles bought abroad while studying, and pay only 30% tax.

And they found a lot of these three or four year old second hand motors were in fact brand new Ferrari's etc.

The next post may be brought to you by my little bitch Spamdreth

back around 2012 I witnessed cars being prep'd for flight in the UK then trucked to the airport to board a flight to Thailand... upon arrival they would be unloaded and straight onto a slide truck out the airport back gate.
