Thailand bans visitors from Africa... but not until December 1st

You have to wonder why the fuck they're waiting. But then look at the last line!

Thailand will ban entry of people travelling from eight African countries it designated as high-risk for the new omicron coronavirus variant, a senior health official said on Saturday.
The list of countries is the same as that used by the United States, which announced its ban early on Saturday.

Starting on Dec 1, travel to Thailand from Botswana, Eswatini, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa and Zimbabwe, will be prohibited, Opas Karnkawinpong, director-general of the Disease Control Department told a news conference.

People already here who recently came from these countries will also be put in 14-day quarantine starting Saturday, he said.

    its been done.

‘The Lure of White Skin – Racism in Thailand‘, where much discussion on this topic has taken place.

“One student had been on vacation in LA, and I asked her if she enjoyed it. We got onto the topic of transport, and I mentioned that I’d assumed you would have to get around by car. She remarked ‘yes, public transport is very dangerous, a lot of black people get on‘.

An older lady had lived in Chicago for a few years. She said ‘I’m afraid of black people. They’re so big‘.

When I was discussing the idea of going to India with a student: ‘No, I don’t want to go. There are a lot of murderers and criminals‘. When I asked her why she thought that, she simply said ‘they have black skin‘.

Another student who’d just come back from a holiday in Bali said she had a lovely time there, ‘but I don’t like black people‘.”

“Yesterday, I was teaching a class about appearances and gave them pictures of different celebrities and asked them to tell me what they looked like. One of those pictures was of Wyclef Jean, which led one student to ask me “can I call him ‘negro‘?” When I responded with “absolutely not”, they were puzzled. They genuinely didn’t seem to know that it was an inappropriate or offensive term and thankfully, were very open to hearing my explanation, so I took time out of the class to make it very clear what words were OK and not OK for them to use and why, which is obviously not something I do when I have a student who makes an intentionally racist remark out of hate. I’m glad we were able to have that conversation.

    Wouldn't you fucking know it

The government is trying to trace 307 people who arrived from eight southern African countries hit by the latest Covid-19 "variant of concern", Omicron, and are still in the country.

Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration spokesman Taweesilp Visanuyothin said on Wednesday that between Nov 15 and 27, 333 people arrived from the eight high-risk African countries.

Three had already left, so 330 remained in Thailand but only 23 of them had been traced, he said.

one would have thought that with all the information the thai obsessively collate on foreign visitors and residents ( photos, addresses, sim card purchases, immigration documentation, bank account details, passport numbers, hotel registrations and cctv systems) that tracing a few visitors that are hardly going to go unnoticed anyway because of the "ahem" appearance of most of them, that the thais would have nabbed these selfish and thoughtless disease spreading africans by now...... and weren't they tested upon arrival anyway?

African tourist arrivals in Phuket found, face tests

PHUKET: Just one day after the announcement that officials were tracking down tourists who had arrived in Phuket from South Africa and Namibia in the hope of preventing the spread of the Omicron variant of COVID-19 across the island, Phuket Immigration Chief Col Thanet Sukchai today confirmed that officers had located all but one of the tourists.

Despite announcing yesterday that 57 tourists from the high-risk Omicron countries in Africa were still on the island, Col Sukchai today (Dec 3) said that 52 were still on the island.

Of those, 26 had already stayed in Phuket more than 14 days without presenting any signs of infection. These 26 will not be tested again for COVID-19, he said.

All 130 arrivals who landed in Phuket between Nov 15-27 tested negative for the virus after arriving in Phuket, he repeated.

Of the remaining tourists, 17 have been located in Phuket and underwent swab tests today. The tests are being provided free by the government, Col Thanet said.

Eight of the 52 tourists had since travelled to other provinces and had been contacted already, he added.

“There is still only one person who has not been recorded as travelling out of Phuket or moving anywhere else. Therefore, we have given his details to the Digital Ministry [Ministry of Digital Economy and Society] so they can check his location from the Mor Chana app,” Col Thanet said.

“In this operation, officials consider this group of tourists as important people, so we have to understand and act well to tourists because these tourists are bringing income to the country.

“All officers have been ordered to act politely and provide good convenience to tourists,” he said.

As a precaution, Col Thanet today, accompanied by Dr Onpat Kawanich, Head of the international infectious disease control checkpoint under the Phuket Port Authority, visited the hotels where the 17 tourists to be tested are staying.

Instead of speaking with the tourists directly, he passed the message on to hotel staff to inform the tourists that they are to be tested.

Hotel staff are to make the arrangements for the tourists to undergo the tests at the Central Floresta shopping mall next Monday or Tuesday (Dec 6-7).
