Thai Authorities Threaten to Fine Foreigners Not Wearing Masks

The government of Thailand’s pandemic response center said the country is at risk of another covid-19 outbreak because some foreign visitors are failing to follow disease control measures. Above all wearing facemasks in public.

Dr. Apisamai Srirangson, a spokesperson for Thailand’s Centre for COVID-19 Situation, said the agency has received complaints from hotel staff and provincial officials who have witnessed foreign visitors violating coronavirus safety measures.

Foreign Tourists are subject to the nationwide mask mandate. The mandate carries a maximum fine of 20,000 baht for violators. Not wearing a facemask can also be considered a criminal offense.

If foreign visitors do not comply, they will be prosecuted, the spokesperson said.

In English, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs deputy spokesman Natapanu Nopakun reiterated the threat and advised foreigners to wear facemasks. The spokesperson also reminded everyone that under the Communicable Disease Act, masks are required to attend public activities.

    Face Masks required by Law

Face Masks are required in public spaces and during group activities, the spokesperson said. “There is a maximum of 20,000 baht for failing to do so.”

As the covid-19 outbreak was beginning in late April, a face mask mandate was imposed after high-ranking government officials and VIPs who flouted social distancing rules.

Everywhere you look these days, you’re likely to spot a blue and white face mask. Nearly two years into the Covid-19 pandemic, disposable face masks are a part of daily life now.

Because the masks are such a key preventative tool against covid-19, it’s important to wear them correctly. Meaning not wearing them under your chin or white side out.

Face Masks should be worn the color side out, wire edge up.

The colored side, “usually blue” goes on the outside, and the edge with a piece of wire in it goes to the top, over your nose. The blue side is water-resistant. The masks are intended for medical staff to protect themselves while doing medical procedures that generated splashes.

If masks are worn well they complement the protection provided by the Covid-19 vaccine.

Beach Road Phuket today: a mate of mine on holiday there said there were loads of farang and he was about the only one wearing a mask. Locals were stopping people and asking them to wear one and warning them about the fines.

38 positive cases reportedly from Taipan, which given nightclubs are still shut down tells you how much the BiB give a shit.

Meanwhile a visit to a Bangla bar owned by a mutual friend of ours revealed 10 bars in the area have been shut down due to positive cases.

A few more have been shut down for three days for breaking the rules.

    Foreign travel advice Thailand

"Until further notice you must also wear a mask in all indoor and outdoor public spaces in Thailand and in vehicles if you are with others. If you do not wear a mask you may have to pay a fine"

    Coronavirus - Thailand travel advice - GOV.UK

One suspects the hotel security cameras footage showing tourists entering not wearing masks, is sufficient evidence of the crime.

My part of Isan is dead as a cemetery. There are only two, small farang bars and they are firmly shut. Maybe some Thai places are open, I'm rarely out at night so I wouldn't know. The Leo stand at the local football stadium was very busy on match night. they are at home again on Saturday, so ....

The Phuket authorities should go back to making all offenders do exercise if caught not wearing masks.

thought it was an Aprils fool joke when I read it.

Rawai metes out exercise as punishment for not wearing face mask

It's definitely Pattaya, that's Northshore and the Holiday Inn in the background and any one of the 3 Brittles on the right could well be The Gent.

So I'm just reading about this couple on their honeymoon, doing test and go.

They were told by their hotel they had negative tests and left the hotel after the one night.

Then they get a phone call summoning them back, he's tested positive so off to hospital where he's awaiting a retest.

She meanwhile is told that because she tested negative and quarantine is over, she is free to go where she likes.

Anyone see something wrong with this picture?

    nothing wrong at all.

it is a perfect gift wrapped example of the idiocy, imbecility, lunacy and fatuity that permeates every aspect of the so called thai intellect and of that which passes for thai governance.

they can find a way of justifying almost any action, however irresponsible, however childish, however ugly and however self destructive so long as it maintains the "we know best" mindset hardwired into the amoebic thai psyche.

    Not in this case.

The manual says "If farang test negative, they can go".

They are incapable of adding any context.

    No falang bars here.

There are a couple of Thai "restaurants" both of which are open in the evening here. Very noisy and mostly young Thais.

Mostly we visit friends houses. Food is cooked and eaten by the host, all contribute to the costs. Whisky, Sangsom and beer are ordered from the local stores and delivered by motorcycles. The situation varies, adjacent local lakes, but mainly at standard Thai houses.

Same as it has been for years.

Just came back from Picking up the GF before, as I was walking along around 20 cops and army are around the bars/restaurants. Not a drink in sight, no doubt been tipped off beforehand, Thai style.

About ten minutes later walking back and hey presto the drinks are back on the tables.

Well at least the music turned down.

Not at all, we rotate around each other's houses. SOP Thai evenings, arrange an evening, food drink, occasional disputes, a game or 10 of cards, hi so for the locals ...

I admit the offering is not always to my taste, though.

Foreigners or not, anyone who disobeys the law of the land by refusing to wear masks where it is mandated should not only be fined, they should be apprehended and held in isolation. At their own expense. But of course we all know how corrupt and hopeless Phuket is.
