Injured wild elephant stomps reporter to death in Chanthaburi

A reporter from the Thai language daily KomChadLuek was attacked and killed by a wild elephant in Chanthaburi’s Khao Khitchakut on Friday.

Parinya Kesarathikul, 46, was taking photographs of the heavily injured elephant, which panicked and charged at people nearby when it was hit with an antibiotics loaded dart. The elephant had sustained serious injuries after a fight with other members of the herd and had taken shelter in the swamp.

Patarapol “Lotter” Maneeorn, a veterinarian with the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation, had discovered the injured elephant in October and warned the animal would charge at all moving objects within a 50-metre vicinity due to stress and panic.

Parinya was taken to Khao Khitchakut Hospital at about 6.30pm and succumbed to his injuries later.

The reporter, who had covered the region for several news channels before joining KomChadLuek online in 2018, also volunteered as a rescue worker in his free time. No personal information about Parinya was available at press time.

Second elephant v human locally in a week, not far from our home in Tha Mai; a cleverly thought out theory on events leading to his death.

    The elephant footprints are conclusive.

    10 November 2021
A man, speculated to be a Cambodian worker, was trampled to death by wild elephants in Thailand.

Based on preliminary reports from the border area, the freak accident case happened on the midnight of November 8. The tragic incident took place in Nong Klam Road, Village 1, Khao Keo Commune, Tha Mai District, Chanthaburi Province, Thailand.

Near the body of the deceased, a motorcycle was found smashed to pieces. Thai authorities concluded that it must have been destroyed by the herd of elephants. They continued that the man must have been driving his motorcycle in the dark and collided into an elephant. The scare caused the elephants to feel threatened and trample the man to death.

This theory was proposed due to the elephant footprints found in the area.

This is the 7th fatality by elephant in Chanthaburi for 2021.

^ Often the simplest answer is the right one...erm or perhaps the simpleton coming up with the answer may not get it right - he probably got a ribbon for it tho.

a few years ago whilst driving to pala-u waterfall, near the myanmar border in prajuab khiri khan we came across an elephant that was threatening the traffic in front of us. about 5 cars were stopped and at the head of the queue was a huge tusker blocking progress, stomping its feet and making a loud racket.

some people had actually got out of their cars and were taking selfies and photos of the psychopathic behemoth.

we however realised the situation could turn bad in an instant so made a 3 point turn and headed back to hua hin with as much haste as could be mustered out of a toyota pick up.

^ there was an incident in Khao Yai somesyear back where an idiot in a pickup thought it would be a good idea to beep his horn at a herd crossing the road, clearly impatient. The traffic was backed up behind him. The matriarch rightly took exception and wandered over and set about the pickup leaving it with a flat front end, bonnet crushed and a number of elephant sized dents in the side. I recall he didn't get much sympathy. You have to wonder at the stupidity of people. I would be more than happy to sit there admiring the herd as it passed.

Chanthaburi elephants go 3-0 in two weeks, another one, rubber tapper. Kaeng Hang Maeo is 'home' to herds of elephants and deaths seem reasonably common.

    29 October 2021
Wild elephant stomped on a worker in front of her husband at rubber plantation.

Chanthaburi province on October 29, 64, Pol. Lt. Col. Kritsakorn Kamolphop, Kaeng Hang Maeo Police Station was informed that wild elephants attacked and killed a rubber tapping worker, Ms. Pramaporn Ponsena, 24, a native of Nong Khai, at Sukjai Village, Kaeng Hang Maeo District, Chanthaburi.

Mr Samart Yindee, 34, the husband of Ms Ponsena, said while riding a motorcycle to Pa Yang he saw two large wild elephants with long tusks. When they came near, the two wild elephants ran out of the forest beside the rubber plantation and attacked him and his wife. Miss Pramaporn tried to run away but was hit by a wild elephant and fell down before one of the elephants stomped on her body several times.

Two separate small herds roaming in Chanthaburi

    Daily News 16 November 2021
One group of seven, the other fifteen elephants.
    .

One herd reported to include the alleged killer 'Plai Ngake' implicated in three deaths.

Some helpful advice here, locals are advised to travel by car rather than motorbike, however, if you see a wild elephant, avoid it and notify the community leaders or officials of the relevant agencies.

Away from Chanthaburi, one less rubber tapper in Chonburi province.
    Autopsy?

    From Thairath
    10 December 2021
    Nong Yai, Chonburi

On 9 December 2021 Wanchai Onsee, 38, had left at 3.00am for rubber tapping and did not return to Kuakun farm, Nong Yai. A search began but was abandoned later that day due to 20-30 wild elephants in the area.

At 7.20am on 10 Dec police with rescuers from Ban Bueng, relatives and villagers, found Wanchai's body lying face down, broken skull, torn abdomen with entrails spilling out. Only his right arm was still attached to his body. The right leg was beside the corpse and the left arm and left leg and internal organs scattered in a radius of 50 meters, the torn clothes of the deceased were piled on the ground 15 meters away. At the scene, dozens of elephants' footprints were found and a number of rubber trees had been flattened.

Police officers collected the parts of the deceased to send to Chonburi Hospital for autopsy.

I just Googled how do elephants kill:

Elephants attack and kill people in terrible ways. They trample people underfoot, they pick people up with their trunks and smash them on the ground, they crush people with their heads, they impale people with their trunks.

Dumbo never did this sort of shit.

I support the elephants. Dismemberment as payback for these farmers and rubber tappers

    25 January 2022
Grandfather of Pala-U, a 60 year old elephant who died after being shot more than 120 times, will be aided by forensic experts in an attempt to identify his killer. Earlier this month, the elephant was found in Phetchaburi province with more than 100 bullet wounds all over its body.

Last Saturday, despite the best efforts of veterinarians who have been treating the bullet-ridden animal, the elephant finally succumbed to his wounds. Officials announced that after being shot more than 120 times, Grandfather of Pala-U had died of sepsis in medical care.
    .
    .
ThaiRath reported total 186 wounds from shotgun pellets and .22 bullets.

That is tragic. I hope they find the culprits. I am guessing plural, these spineless morons wouldn't go up against an elephant single-handed.

2022, 11 September, and this 65-year-old monk Prajan Suksingh wasn't fast enough at Wat Santiwanaram, Chanthaburi.

He went outside to see why the dogs were barking. Sneaky elephant from behind.

    More at link

Staff confirmed that an elephant was responsible for the monk’s death after reviewing surveillance footage and finding footprints at the scene.
Another monk said he heard the temple’s dogs barking at the time of the incident. He suspects that Suksingh had gone outside to check on the dogs when he was attacked by the elephant. The wild elephant, who lives at the nearby Khao Chamao-Khao Wong National Park, is estimated to be about 7 to 10 years old with tusks that are about 50 cm long. There have recently been three or four elephants walking through the temple grounds, according to the monks.
