Non-immigrant visa applicants required to have ฿3m health insurance

Foreigners applying for non-immigrant (O-A) visas for stays in Thailand of up to one year are now required to have a health insurance policy with minimum coverage of three million baht for in-patient medical fees, instead of the previous 400,000 baht.

Deputy Public Health Minister Sathit Pitutecha said today (Tuesday) that the new rule is intended to ensure that they will receive proper medical treatment if they fall ill during their long stay in the country.

According to the Thai Immigration Bureau and the Department of Consular Affairs, 3,768 foreigners were granted non-immigrant visas last and this year.

The insurance policies can either be purchased in Thailand or in their home country, but the coverage amount of foreign issued policies must be on a par with the sum stipulated in policies issued in Thailand.

If I understand this correctly. a O-A visa is for people over 50 based on retirement. Am I correct? So what happens to those retired here that are too old to qualify for health insurance?
and has this been published in the Royal Gazette and is now the law of the land, or is it another proposal pending approval?

    Misleading headline.

    Almost newbie-ish.

    Retirement visas.

Non-Immigrant visas for spouse, child, work, education etc. are not affected, only ones based on retirement.

    Certainly a misleading headline.

You can call Harry many things, many of as often have LOL, but he is certainly not a newbie. (I know you said "almost newbie-is). To be fair to him he did not editorialise, he simply re-posted the article as is, the misleading headline came from the article not from Harry.

I thought that privately offered insurance premiums were age sensitive, and contained pre-existing conditions exclusions.
As such . not only would they be useless for most ailments, but prohibitively expensive after a certain age, or not available at all.
If the Thai government wants elderly retirees to be insured, they should allow them to buy into the government health care insurance system as some other countries do.
IMO it seems that Thailand is becoming progressively insane. (at least the government is) and as such not a viable long term solution.

A country can easily become insane, I mean look at the US. Need I say more?
Ha ha ha, try and stop me.
it becomes a process like slowly raising the temperature of the water where the frog boils without noticing.
a proposal here, a mandate there, individually innocuous but collectively.....
You my friend might already be insane and not know it. Apply " the insane is as insane does " self test proposition and tell me Is your country slowly becoming insane? has it already done so? and if so have you contributed in the insanity?
I did a quick self assessment and sadly found myself not only having contributed, but doing so even as we speak and write this post reply
But there is great news. The great thing about drain bramage is you never know you have it.

And even then, only applied to new applicants until next year.

For renewal customers the coverage will continue as usual until approximately 1st of October 2022

I would hardly call, paying into their system a fair amount "leaching into their system" most of us have good insurance back at home, and for major medical interventions would go back there, so many of us will only use it for minor medical issues and emergency situations, thus infusing much needed cash flow in to the system. I am sur that is given all nessacery dato, and assistants with expertise and experience in the funding of the system and I am sure I can devise a fair and equitable arrangement .

Just find yourself a nice girl, get married, and problem solved, in addition get companionship and someone to share the ups and downs of life. If you do it right it can be a rewarding proposition.

Into the mix is the jockeying for new leadership.

They want poor docile Burmese to work like slaves , take rap for local crimes, but deport once knackered.
They want tourists or virtual tourist just send money to the gfs
They will tolerate wealthy folks who can be profitable, golfer /yachtees, major rug dealers by special arrangement.
What they resent is low budget pensioners/partners some of whom in the past had the effrontery to die in public hospitals before they paid.

In many situations you get long term discounts think, women, phone plan, fiber optic, Jim membership.

Health cover is different, in socialized medicine countires the young/healthier subsidize the sick .

I quite expect xenophobia will rise until a new "General MANAGER" emerges, when a more realistic view of incomers "may develop if they do the sums'.

Once Thai insurance required , then local firms only, then for all stays it'll be self fulfilling that many will be ousted/deterred from long stay by cost or as others state pre exisiting or at an age when no cover offered.

Right after I posted that the Thai goverment should allow long stay foreigners to buy into their goverment sponsored medical program, you said:
" Fair play, Thailand don't wont no broke arse old dead beats leeching of their health system.
    Kudo's to them."
    Which prompted my response.

So forgive me if I assume you were replying to me .
IMO a fair assumption to make.
After re reading your reply, I can see that you might have not been replying to me but rather to the OP.
If so , I would quote the great American philosopher Rosana Rasanadana. and say

This policy is patterned after the COE USD 100,000 COVID policy with the principal differences is that it is general cover, and that they dropped the USD silliness. My Pacific Cross policy that I applied for at 71 would qualify - current cost after discounts for deductible and no claim runs about ThB 100,000 per year
