    Check your bank transactions....

Some Thai retailers payment terminals have been compromised is my guess.

Not sure why they'd use Skidmark's bank book to illustrate it though.

If it is a retailer, then foreign cards may be impacted too.

PM urges quick action on fraudulent cash withdrawals

    Check your bank transactions....-c1_2199719-jpg

Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha has ordered urgent action to resolve the issue of irregular online withdrawals of cash debited through bank credit cards after complaints by many cardholders.

Government spokesman Thanakorn Wangboonkongchana said on Monday the prime minister had instructed all relevant agencies to investigate and put an end to the problem.

The Bank of Thailand and Thai Bankers' Association issued a joint statement on Sunday saying banks would accept responsibility for the debts fraudulently accrued by customers.

The statement said no commercial banks' systems had been hacked. The irregular transactions were for payment to online shops registered outside Thailand.

The money was withdrawn through credit and debit cards. The cardholders did not buy goods online from those shops and were not alerted to the withdrawals.

A Facebook page called Sharing Experience on Unaware Cash Withdrawal has been created where the victims are sharing their bitter experiences.

Most showed the same pattern. The money was taken out in small sums and the illegal transaction repeated numerous times over a short period, mostly at night.

People posting on the Facepage questioned the reliability of the banks where they were customers because they had received no alerts. They learned their money was withrawn only when they updated their passbooks or checked their accounts online.

One victim showed her bank book with 13 withdrawals on Oct 11, each for 34.15 baht.

The number of victims remained unclear but the Facebook sharing experience account had more than 57,000 followers on Monday, with the number increasing.

Security measures in Thailand are woeful.

Confirming a transaction by entering a code sent by sms should be a minimum.

Would probably work if you didn't mind waiting half an hour to buy a packet of fags in 7/11 on your debit card.

Is there any topic on which your aim is not to be an obtuse arse?

Obviously that’s covered by an sms sent to the purchaser confirming use of a card.

    Same Same.

That would mean every.single.payment.transaction would have to go back to the card issuer and be processed against the account; and an SMS sent back to the customer who would have to enter it somewhere.

Right now only certain transactions (including ALL cash ones) go back to the issuer.

The volume of traffic would increase exponentially, which means everything from bandwidth to processing capability and storage would need to be expanded.

The end result, at least in the short term, would be you waiting half an hour to buy a packet of fags in 7/11.

    You utterly dopey wankstain.

Do banks in Thailand not send an SMS when the card is used?

Fucking hell, even my Petrol card does that.

    Oh dear.

The Bank of Thailand and the bankers’ association made a joint statement clarifying the issue and said that the investigation is underway.
The card issuers have now suspended cards with unusual transactions,” the statement said.

I'm with UOB and they always send an sms thanking me for using the card and inform me that I can spread the payment over 36months. They do not tell me the baht amount

With no current inside knowledge it is suspiciously close to ONE $ the reason I say that of course an onshore greenback is a tad over 33,3 baht pm today on my app, but floating real close but not over 34 recently

They do, well Kasikorn certainly does so I'd think the rest would too. When using an ATM, I get a text message and notification on the Kasikorn app on my phone about the same time the whirring noise is going on before the money even comes out of the machine.

    So....

The cardholders did not buy goods online from those shops and were not alerted to the withdrawals.
Implies they went for banks that don't offer this service. Which suggests an inside (if only in-country) job.

No. Not automatically. I checked and my Bangkok Bank Mastercard was hit multiple times over 3 nights. I don't yet know the extent of the damage, about B30 maybe 100 times, too much scrolling on my phone.

The gf thinks that sms advice is a paid for extra. I will check tomorrow.

This is the account where I keep my Immigration deposit so I feel lucky they didn't hit it for hundreds of thousands.

I saw the news this morning. I thought I'd be fine because I never use the card. Then I checked.

Anyone who hasn't yet checked your account, I suggest you do.

Bangkok Bank sends an SMS when their debit cards are used. They also send an email notice when someone opens the account online.

I check my bank account about once a week, anyway, since a friend of mine told me the story of how his mother’s savings account had been cleaned out by her bank manager. The money was recovered, but still….egads.

    Exactly.

Every atm withdrawal, online purchase and transfer is sms'd to my registered phone number, immediately. Cash withdrawals even before the cash is spat out.

Some with a bank telephone number if any concerns.

Not that I hear them at night, when asleep.

The gf was looking at a lot of social media this morning. Thousands of victims, many complaining about not receiving any sms messages and also about bank staff telling them they had to file a police report before the bank would investigate. Several different banks involved.

Some people report hundreds of transactions and their accounts emptied. This made the gf laugh, it is the first time that she has been happy about having no money in her account, so nothing for fraudsters to steal.

If you have a debit card on your account then it is definitely worth a quick check.

Police are stepping up their investigations after it was revealed about 40,000 people had lost at least 10 million baht as a result of unauthorised online transactions.

The commissioner of the Cyber Crime Investigation Bureau (CCIB), Pol Lt Gen Kornchai Klaiklung, said the police are in talks with the Bank of Thailand and the Thai Bankers' Association to find a solution.

"Initial checks found around 40,000 people have lost their money through such transactions," Pol Lt Gen Kornchai said, before adding the majority of victims didn't realise their money were being withdrawn as the perpetrators generally charged small amounts -- albeit repeatedly.

Pol Lt Gen Kornchai said such withdrawals are possible if the perpetrators managed to get their hands on customers' bank card details, which are often stored by online retailers and websites for the convenience of customers.

He said the police suspect multiple gangs are responsible for the crimes, using a variety of methods to commit offences.

Some gangs "phish" for their victims' details by sending out text messages which asked them to fill in their personal details in exchange of discounts and other perks, he said. As such, he warned the public to not fill in their personal details into online forms that came from links from suspicious and/or unknown senders.

Meanwhile, some charges and withdrawals were made by store employees who stole their customers' card details when their victims were completing a transaction, he said.

The commander of CCIB's cyber crime analysis division, Pol Maj Gen Niwet Apawasin, said that some of the charges were initiated by online gaming platforms. He added that it would be easier to investigate applications registered in Thailand than those registered outside the country.

Police will hold discussions with the Bank of Thailand and online vendors to find ways to prevent such fraud -- for example, by making the registration of online shops mandatory or issuing alerts when suspicious withdrawals are made, he said.

Government spokesman Thanakorn Wangboonkongchana said Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha has instructed all agencies to take urgent action to put an end to the problem.

On Sunday, the Bank of Thailand and Thai Bankers' Association issued a joint statement on Sunday saying banks would accept responsibility for unauthorised withdrawals.

The statement said no commercial banks' systems had been hacked, adding the irregular transactions were for payment to online shops registered outside Thailand.

Many victims are sharing their experiences on a Facebook page called "Sharing Experience on Unaware Cash Withdrawals".

They questioned the security and reliability of Thai banks' because they received no alerts at all when the unauthorised withdrawals were made. Most victims, in fact, only found out when they went to a bank to update their passbook.

One victim posted her passbook, which showed 13 withdrawals on Oct 11, each for 34.15 baht.

The total number of victims remained unclear, but the aforementioned Facebook account had more than 57,000 followers as of Monday.

Deputy police spokesman Pol Col Kissana Phathanacharoen said victims should ask banks to freeze their account and check their balance on their accounts once they suspect an unauthorised withdrawal has been made, before gathering all the evidence to file a police report.

He also said that those who misuse or abuse others' electronic cards will face a jail term of no more than five years and/or a fine of no more than 100,000 baht under the Criminal Code.

Paiboon Amornpinyokiat, a cyber security expert, told a television programme the unauthorised withdrawals were made possible by the failure of banks' alert systems.

"Alerts were usually supposed to be issued, but they were not," he said.

He also said some victims voluntarily gave up their personal information because they weren't digitally literate, adding that agencies involved should investigate whether the withdrawals were the banks' fault.

Casting doubt on the banks liability, nice.

Inside job it is then, with the BIB involved.

    Great for consumer confidence...
