Swiss man kills armed Thai burglar, gets arrested

Police in Udon Thani in Thailand's north east have promised justice after a Thai man was killed by a Swiss pensioner at the foreigner's house.

The Thai man scaled a wall and demanded money and a fight broke out after he pulled a gun.

The pensioner hit him in the head then tied him up before the police were called. But the intruder had died.

It was the early hours of Sunday when Pol Capt Sukin Rajankaew of the Nakha police went to a house one kilometer from the village in Moo 4 Ban Khamin in Kutsa sub-district.

There the police and rescue services found 53 year old Sathian dead in a kitchen behind the house. He had cheek and eyebrow cuts and bruises and had his hands and feet bound.

He was taken for an autopsy at Soon Udon Thani Hospital.

Waiting to surrender himself at the scene was Rudolf J.R., 63, the Swiss houseowner.

He admitted knocking out the victim but denied intending to kill him.

He said that late Saturday night he had been having a coffee in his kitchen. His wife had been out drinking with friends and had come home and gone to bed.

The intruder scaled a concrete wall and was armed with a gun which he pointed at him demanding "money, money", reported Daily News.

A struggle ensued as the Swiss man said he grabbed the intruder's arm and the gun went off but it didn't hit anyone.

Rudolf said he threw it in the pond next to the house.

In the furious fight fists and feet were used to attack the intruder who was knocked unconscious.

Worried that he would regain consciousness the foreigner tied him up, woke up his wife and got her to contact the phu yai ban to inform the police.

However, when the phu yai ban arrived Sathian was already dead.

Lak, 44, the Swiss man's wife, said that she and her husband had been married for ten years and lived off his retirement fund. He used to be an architect.

They had no trouble with anyone and no enemies, she said.

She admitted to being someone who liked to go out and party with friends. Two years ago she said she met Sathian, a general employee and farmer, who was a friend of a friend.

She said that he tried to initiate a relationship with her but she declined his advances. She would meet him in the village and say hello, that was all.

She never thought he would try to rob them and it would come to this.

Rudolf was taken away to the police station along with a .38 revolver that was found in the pond.

It contained 5 rounds in the chamber, one had been fired.

Pol Maj-Gen Phisanu Unhaseri said there were two cases - the first involved trespass at night with a gun and attempted murder against the victim.

The second is that the foreigner will face charges of inflicting bodily harm causing death.

Whether it was self-defence will be taken into consideration, said the provincial police chief promising "justice for both sides".

He said there would be a full investigation.

More on this as we hear of developments in the case.

"The incident has drawn widespread discussion on social media, with many diverse points of view over the foreign national being charged."
Which means outraged Thai netizens want him convicted for killing the poor Thai armed burglar that was threatening his life.

    * Note for sybille: And outraged farang netizens want him knighted.

The Swiss guy did well taking on a much younger, armed chickenhead.

However much the evidence appears in his favor, he is very likely going to get fucked over by the "justice" system for the next year or more. Lots of cash will be needed for bail money, lawyers, court costs and whatever else they can grind out of him.
With lots of luck, and a well connected lawyer, he may get off with a hefty fine and a million or so in compensation for the relatives of the rather incompetent burglar.

I wish he all the best.

I suspect the swiss chap had his own area sectioned off.

I knew a German chap who built his own house on the same plot of land he'd build the family home, got the deeds separated up. He'd given up with living in the same abode as the extended family and all that entails. All was well with this domestic arrangement until the wife lost the plot...literally, the plot the family house was on through gambling debts. Luckily he had provided a fall back position and they all decamped to his house. He stuck it for 4 years before he took a plane back to Germany.

^ I think he had enough money not to worry, he walked away from it all and barely batted an eyelid. He had a business in Germany and property. You know the saying, don't invest in Thailand what you can't afford to walk away from.

I wasn't thinking about the money.

    But they might have been!

    The plot thickens...

Apparently the 'intruder' was indeed having an affair with the Swiss guy's wife. However, it looks like he took a very severe beating while the Swiss guy has no injuries. You'd have thought he would have at least a couple of broken knuckles if he hit the guy hard enough to kill him.

Did the Swiss guy find out about the affair and organise for a good beating that went too far? Did he have the body dragged into his house and claim he was being held up at gun point?

He may have to pay off a few to get away with this one...

Mainly dead Thai's mother gossiping to the press. Rumours have it that he was invited round but so much doesn't add up. Why did he take his gun?

I heard on Thai news that the dead guy had numerous injuries including a split liver. Swiss guy didn't have any marks on him, which is very suspicious if true.

Press can run this for a while before police get to the bottom of it....

Family members of Thai man who was killed by Swiss national in Udon Thani claim motive was affair not money

Family members of the victim who was killed by a Swiss national in Udon Thani on Sunday revealed their side of the story yesterday, October 5th, claiming that the victim was reportedly killed for having an affair.

Sathien Chantarakhantri, 53, was found dead with his legs and armed tied at the house of a 63-year-old Swiss national, Rudolf Joseph Rothy, in Mueang Udon Thani district on Sunday around midnight. Rudolf, who was present at the scene with his Thai wife, whose name was withheld by law enforcement, allegedly confessed to killing the man, stating that Sathien had been threatening him with a firearm for money and that his actions were taken in self-defense after Sathien intruded upon his property. Rudolf claims he tied the man up as he was afraid Sathien would recover and attack him and his family.

The Swiss house owner was initially charged for assaulting others to death while the deceased was also charged for trespassing at night, carrying a firearm in public, and attempted murder.

However, family members of the deceased told local reporters yesterday that they did not believe Rudolf’s allegations that Sathien was breaking into his house for money as he did not have any money problems and often offered money to Rudolf’s Thai wife from time to time. Instead, the family members claimed the incident was about an alleged affair between Sathien and Rudolf’s wife.

Sathien’s uncle, Thaworn Phumphet, 65, told local Thai reporters that Sathien had once had a wife and children but they divorced because he was in a secret relationship with the foreigner’s wife. Regarding the gun, Thaworn said that the deceased bought the firearm legally about a year ago as a registered second-hand gun.

Sathien’s mother, Khan Chantarakhantri, told the Thai press that her son was secretly having a relationship with Rudolf’s wife for 2-3 years. The reason he went inside the house was that the wife was reportedly calling him. However, Sathien instead confronted the foreigner before there was a quarrel and subsequent physical altercation.

“The autopsy concluded that he died of a liver rupture. He might have been beaten to death. Please be just and don’t say that my son went to rob the foreigner. It ruins our family reputation,”
    she added.

Multiple Thai media sources noted that Sathien had recently just sold some land and had come into a decent amount of money as a result, raising questions as to why he would be potentially robbing anyone for additional funds. Rudolf was approached by reporters to be given an opportunity to respond to the statements from the Thai family yesterday evening but refused to speak to the press, according to local media reports.

According to Udon Thani police, the court system will take into effect statements from all parties involved as part of their investigation and that police continue to gather evidence around the incident.

For whatever reason, He went to the Swiss man's house with a loaded gun, the weapon was drawn and discharged.
If that is not grounds for justifiable homicide, I don't know what is.

Yeah. I would like to hear anyone’s explanation of why a man would go to his girlfriend’s house with a loaded gun while her husband was home.

    His intention was good?
