Taiwan scrambles jets as Chinese aircraft enter air defence zone

Taiwan’s air force has scrambled once again to warn off 19 Chinese aircraft that entered its air defence zone, according to its defence ministry, in the latest uptick in tensions across the Taiwan Strait.

The Chinese aircraft included 12 J-16 fighters and two nuclear-capable H-6 bombers, the ministry said on Thursday.

Last Friday, the ministry said that Taiwan’s air force warned away 10 Chinese aircraft that entered its air zone in a similar incident.

It involved six J-16 and two J-11 fighters along with one anti-submarine and one reconnaissance aircraft, according to the ministry.

Chinese-claimed Taiwan has complained of repeated missions by China’s air force near the democratically governed island, often in the southwestern part of its air defence zone close to the Taiwan-controlled Pratas Island.

Last week’s incident came a day after Taiwan proposed boosting military spending by $8.7bn over the next five years, including on new missiles, warning of an urgent need to upgrade weapons in the face of a “severe threat” from China.

Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen, who first came to office in 2016, has made modernising the armed forces and increasing defence spending a priority.

“The Chinese Communists have continued to invest heavily in national defence budgets, its military strength has grown rapidly, and it has frequently dispatched aircraft and ships to invade and harass our seas and airspace,” Taiwan’s defence ministry said in a statement last Thursday after a weekly cabinet meeting.

Is the idea that China is suddenly going to invade Taiwan with ground forces? I consider that pretty much laughable.

    Damned interesting phenomenon.

These Chinese provocations are pretty much a daily occurrence. The Ministry of Defense publish their reports here:

Ministry Of National Defense R.O.C-News Channel

Yesterday, Friday, saw the largest number of Chnese aircraft ever reported. They say 25 aircraft in the first wave and a further 13 later in the day.

There was another decent punch-up in Taiwans Parliament quite recently- they're a pugnacious bunch, like the Irish of Asia.
It's official- more violence has occurred within the Taiwanese "Legislative Yuan" than has ever occurred between PRC & ROC!
Now that's newsworthy, we all like a good political punch-up.

Apart from subjecting the Taiwanese pilots to fatigue, I think 3 aircraft have crashed in the past year or two, and stretching Taiwan's finances to pay for all the defence arrangements, the usual routing of the Chinese aircraft suggests that they are emphasising their ability to control the space between Taiwan and the Pratas (Dong Sha) island. Maybe Pratas will be a first step, I don't think any civilians live there and China has shown that it doesn't worry about maintaining pristine coral atolls.

Also perhaps the Chinese are demonstrating that they could effectively encircle Taiwan, at sea and in the air. Then it would be up to other powers to decide if they wanted to start a fight with a first strike against those Chinese forces.

The Chinese don't need to use ground forces, yet, although they have built a lot of infrastructure on the coast facing Taiwan to make it a credible threat.

The Taiwanese have also built up pretty formidable coastal and island defences- a credible counterthreat.

Taiwan angered after largest ever incursion by Chinese air force

TAIPEI, Oct 2 (Reuters) - Taiwan sharply criticised China on Saturday after Beijing marked the founding of the People's Republic of China with the largest ever incursion by the Chinese air force into the island's air defence zone.

Chinese-claimed Taiwan has complained for a year or more of repeated missions by China's air force near the democratically governed island, often in the southwestern part of its air defence zone close to the Taiwan-controlled Pratas Islands.

Taiwanese fighters scrambled against 38 Chinese aircraft in two waves on Friday, the Taiwan Defence Ministry said. It said Taiwan sent combat aircraft to warn away the Chinese aircraft, while missile systems were deployed to monitor them.

"China has been wantonly engaged in military aggression, damaging regional peace," Taiwan Premier Su Tseng-chang told reporters on Saturday morning.

The first wave of incursions comprised 18 J-16 and four Su-30 fighter jets plus two nuclear-capable H-6 bombers and an anti-submarine aircraft, while the second had 10 J-16s, 2 H-6s and an early warning aircraft, the ministry said.

The first batch of Chinese aircraft all flew in an area close to the Pratas Islands, with the two bombers flying closest to the atoll, according to a map issued by the ministry.

The second group flew down into the Bashi Channel that separates Taiwan from the Philippines, a key waterway that links the Pacific with the disputed South China Sea.

China has yet to comment. It has previously said such flights were to protect the country's sovereignty and aimed at "collusion" between Taiwan and the United States, the island's most important international backer.

The previous largest incursion happened in June, involving 28 Chinese air force aircraft.

China's latest mission came less than a day after its government launched a attack on Taiwan's foreign minister, evoking the words of revolutionary leader Mao Zedong to denounce him as a "shrilling" fly for his efforts to promote Taiwan internationally.

China has stepped up military and political pressure to try and force Taiwan to accept Chinese sovereignty.

Taiwan says it is an independent country and will defend its freedom and democracy.

The world free diving championships kowtowed to the chinkies and removed the flag from Taiwan entrants' names.

Many of their fellow divers told the chickenshits to remove theirs in protest at this pointless piece of arselicking.

Needless to say the ones left are ones with a historical reputation for being fucking pussies.

Notable however are the Russian and French divers. Well done to them.

As you may observe, it is an area far beyond any 12 mile sovereign limit, even if Taiwan was a recognised country, which the UN does not.

More aggression from unexceptional western entities.

    C'est la vie.

I would like to point out that you are the one misleading others with your tireless efforts to “prove” the PRC has the right to bully and threaten a country which has no desire to be a part of them.

Su slams PRC’s incursions with 38 jets

‘DAMAGING PEACE’: Calling the forays into Taiwan’s air defense identification zone ‘wanton,’ Su said the international community is increasingly renouncing the bullying

Premier Su Tseng-chang (蘇貞昌) yesterday criticized China after 38 of its military aircraft crossed into Taiwan’s air defense identification zone (ADIZ) on Friday, the most in a single day since Taiwan began issuing a tally on such incursions in September last year.

On Friday evening, the Ministry of National Defense reported that 25 Chinese planes had crossed into the nation’s southeastern ADIZ, between Taiwan proper and the Pratas Islands (Dongsha Island, 東沙群島).

It identified the planes as 18 J-16 fighter jets, four SU-30 fighters, two H-6 bombers and one Y-8 anti-submarine warfare plane.

Late on Friday night, the ministry reported that 13 Chinese aircraft had entered the southwestern ADIZ, identifying them as 10 J-16 fighter jets, two H-6 bombers and one KJ-500, which is a third-generation airborne early warning and control aircraft.

The J-16 fighters and the H-6 bombers entered the ADIZ from the direction of China’s Fujian and Guangdong provinces, crossed the Bashi Channel and returned to China, while the KJ-500 entered the ADIZ from the direction of Guangdong, before returning to China, ministry data showed.

The incursions came on the 100th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China.

In response, Taiwan’s air force scrambled planes to monitor the Chinese aircraft, issued radio warnings and mobilized air defense assets, the ministry said.

Before Friday’s incursion, the most Chinese military planes to enter the ADIZ in a single day was 28 on June 15, two days after the G7 issued a statement highlighting the importance of peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait.

Later yesterday, the ministry said that another 20 Chinese air force planes had crossed into the ADIZ.

“China has been wantonly engaging in military aggression, damaging regional peace,” Su said.

China has used a wide range of bullying tactics against Taiwan, but the actions have increasingly been renounced by other countries, Su said.

Shu Hsiao-huang (舒孝煌), a research fellow at the Institute for National Defense and Security Research, said that the J-16 is the main fighter jet of China’s air force, and mobilizing 16 of them was perhaps aimed at familiarizing its pilots with the air space around Taiwan.

It could be a training exercise to acclimatize pilots to long-range flights, as well as coordinating with bombers, he added.

Taiwan should boost defenses in its southwestern air space, he said, adding that improving its intelligence gathering capabilities in the area could give the military more time to deploy mobile anti-air missile trucks on the east coast.

Retired air force deputy commander lieutenant general Chang Yen-ting (張延廷) said previous assumptions that Taiwan’s east coast is relatively safe are no longer true.

The route taken by the Chinese planes demonstrates that the whole of Taiwan is now within bombing range of its air force, and Taiwan’s military should begin establishing hardened aircraft shelters, Chang said.

The difference is about a discussion regarding China's air force entering Taiwan's space.

Well seeing it is apparently so very important to tiny minds:-

PLA holds record-breaking drill near Taiwan island on National Day, 'routine but significant'

The Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) reportedly dispatched a record-breaking number of 38 warplanes, mostly fighters and bombers, near the island of Taiwan for exercise on Friday with activities during both day and night on Friday.

The PLA exercise was a routine one despite taking place on the National Day in the mainland, but it showed the increasing combat preparedness and determination of the PLA over the island of Taiwan, Chinese mainland experts said on Saturday.

25 PLA aircraft, namely 18 J-16 fighter jets, four Su-30 fighter jets, two H-6 bombers and a Y-8 anti-submarine warfare aircraft, entered the island of Taiwan's self-proclaimed southwest air defense identification zone on Friday, Taiwan's defense authorities said in a press release on the day.

Later on Friday, Taiwan's defense authorities published a separate press release, saying that at night, 13 additional PLA aircraft, namely 10 J-16 fighter jets, two H-6 bombers and a KJ-500 early warning aircraft, entered the island of Taiwan's self-proclaimed southwest air defense identification zone. The J-16s and the H-6s went on and circled to the southeast side of the island, before returning to the mainland, the press release show.

This means a total of 38 PLA aircraft were involved in the PLA exercise near the island of Taiwan on Friday, breaking the previous record of 28 aircraft on June 15.

The PLA is increasing the scale of exercises near the island of Taiwan, and this is normal and routine, Song Zhongping, a Chinese mainland military expert and TV commentator, told the Global Times on Saturday.

The PLA needs more deployment to deter the armed forces on the island and foreign interference, so it is necessary that related drills become of larger scale, Song said.

Both day and night are time a battle can take place, so the PLA must be ready to fight and win even during nighttime, Song said, noting that the PLA's capabilities in this aspect are being boosted significantly.

Friday is National Day in the mainland, and the PLA's exercise displayed its capability in safeguarding national unity, sovereignty and territorial integrity, which is a very practical way to celebrate the day, Song said.

On the same day on Friday, the Center for Strategic and International Studies released its conversation with Dr. Kathleen H. Hicks, Deputy Secretary of Defense, during which the US senior official said the US is monitoring the situation on the island of Taiwan very carefully and the US has “a significant amount of capability forward in the region to tamp down” the mainland’s military actions toward the island.

However, experts warned that if a military conflict does break out over the Taiwan Straits, the selfish opportunists – the US may retreat once they see no way to reap the benefits, just like they did in Afghanistan. And the Chinese mainland has sufficient means and strong capabilities to solve the Taiwan question once and for all.

PLA holds record-breaking drill near Taiwan island on National Day, 'routine but significant' - Global Times

As you can see, they are very contrite and apologetic.

I don't agree with your China "position" but with that statement count me as highly in agreement.

This is a very sensitive issue on the forum.

As far as I'm concerned we are already into the new and revived cold war.

    Get usta it.

    [QUOTE=misskit;4315201]threaten a country[/QUOTE
China did not threaten any country. China flew some of its planes, in its own airspace.

Here is a helpfull link to the countries recognised by the UN. No country called Taiwan. There is however, a province of China by that name.

Statement on the East China Sea Air Defense Identification Zone

    Press Statement John Kerry
    Secretary of State

    Washington, DC

    November 23, 2013

"The United States is deeply concerned about China's announcement that they've established an "East China Sea Air Defense Identification Zone." This unilateral action constitutes an attempt to change the status quo in the East China Sea. Escalatory action will only increase tensions in the region and create risks of an incident.

Freedom of overflight and other internationally lawful uses of sea and airspace are essential to prosperity, stability, and security in the Pacific. We don't support efforts by any State to apply its ADIZ procedures to foreign aircraft not intending to enter its national airspace. The United States does not apply its ADIZ procedures to foreign aircraft not intending to enter U.S. national airspace. We urge China not to implement its threat to take action against aircraft that do not identify themselves or obey orders from Beijing.

We have urged China to exercise caution and restraint, and we are consulting with Japan and other affected parties, throughout the region. We remain steadfastly committed to our allies and partners, and hope to see a more collaborative and less confrontational future in the Pacific."
