China's comments on Taiwan president’s National Day speech ‘unconstructive and slanderous’

TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The Mainland Affairs Council (MAC) issued a statement on Sunday (Oct. 10) responding to China’s Taiwan Affairs Office, calling its comments about President Tsai Ing-Wen’s (蔡英文) National Day speech “totally unconstructive accusations and slander.”

On Sunday, while Tsai reiterated Taiwan’s goodwill and commitments to “contribute to the peaceful development of the region,” she also highlighted Taiwan’s resolve in protecting its democracy and freedom. “Nobody can force Taiwan to take the path China has laid out for us,” she said, calling upon opposing party leaders to come together to defend Taiwan’s sovereignty.

Tsai mentioned four commitments in her speech: commitment to a “free and democratic constitutional system,” that “the Republic of China and the People's Republic of China should not be subordinate to each other,” to “resist annexation or encroachment upon our sovereignty,” and that “the future of the Republic of China (Taiwan) must be decided in accordance with the will of the Taiwanese people.”

“These four commitments are the bottom line and common denominator that the people of Taiwan have given us,” she said.

To this, China’s Taiwan Affairs office spokesperson Ma Xiaoguang (馬曉光) responded that the speech “eggs on ‘Taiwan’s independence,’ instigates opposition, tears apart history, twists facts, and attempts to kidnap the will of Taiwanese people under a facade of ‘consensus and unity,’ while scheming with outside forces to provoke with its plot for independence.”

Ma insisted that Tsai, whose presidency entered a second term through a landslide victory in a direct election, could not represent the will of Taiwanese people.

He said the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) government has been incompetent since its election, and spends its time “madly suppressing dissidents” under a “green horror.” Despite Taiwan’s various achievements such as becoming the first Asian country to legalize same-sex marriage, and the globally applauded success at containing COVID-19, Ma said any “claim” of “Taiwan is doing better” is an insult to the intelligence of Taiwanese citizens.

Taiwan’s MAC said in a statement that President Tsai’s speech emphasized Taiwan’s willingness and efforts to maintain a status quo and regional peace, which conforms to Taiwan’s cross-Strait policies. The MAC also stressed the fact that the Republic of China has been an autonomous nation in the past 110 years, and there has never been a hierarchy between Taiwan and China.

“The Chinese Communist Party’s totally unconstructive accusations, criticism and slander will only increase the both countries’ disparity and the gap of perceptions, which is not helpful to developing positive interaction,” said the MAC.

In an interview with CNA, Taiwan’s Representative to the U.S. Hsiao Bi-khim (蕭美琴), who celebrated Taiwan’s National Day with the overseas Taiwanese community, said that Taiwan must find its own path in an era of global instability.

She said while she does not know how China interprets “the Republic of China and the People's Republic of China should not be subordinate to each other,” she believes Tsai’s speech is a description of facts. Under the common belief of democracy and freedom, everybody knows that ethnically-Chinese people around the world can only be truly free when the Republic of China is able to stand and protect its own system, she was cited by CNA as saying.

    Interesting article. In summary -

The Taiwan MND data indicate that nearly 80 percent of Chinese intrusions involve no more than two sorties, and that of these 134 small-scale incursions, approximately 70 percent involve the dispatch of at least one KQ-200 maritime patrol and anti-submarine warfare (MPA-ASW) aircraft. These almost-daily MPA-ASW aircraft sorties near the Bashi Channel are linked to China’s interest in monitoring foreign warship movements in and out of the South China Sea, and practicing the difficult skill of searching and tracking, or “prosecuting,” of foreign submarines entering China’s “near seas.”

Based on our analysis of publicly available data, we can see that since mid-September 2020, when the MND began publishing its data, Chinese air incursions have grown both in quantity and intensity, with the bulk of the intrusions demonstrating the “new normal” or the more capable and confident PLA maintaining near-daily training and patrol sorties near critical choke points, including the Bashi Channel. We have also shown that the recorded incursions between September 2020 and May 2021 were predominantly directed at exigencies other than Taiwan and more directly about challenging and monitoring of the U.S. naval and air presence in the region and reacting to Washington’s diplomatic and political overtures to Taipei.

China Blasts Taiwan’s Acknowledgement of U.S. Military Presence

China on Thursday lashed out at Taiwan after its president confirmed the presence of U.S. military trainers on the island nation, issuing new threats of apparent military action at a time of perhaps unprecedented tensions across the Taiwan Straits.

"The more these people collude with external forces, the faster the punishment from the mainland will arrive," the English-language Global Times, considered a mouthpiece for the Chinese Communist Party, wrote in a scathing op-ed published Thursday morning. "As the secessionist forces on the island seek support and protection, at the same time, they are also pushing the mainland to decide to resolve the Taiwan question by force."

Other officials in China expressed similar outrage. A spokesperson for its State Council Taiwan Affairs Office vowed Beijing would afford "zero tolerance" toward the idea of Taiwan independence, state news service CGTN reported. Beijing considers Taiwan nothing more than a renegade province of the mainland.

In an interview with CNN published late Wednesday, Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen confirmed prior speculation that the limited U.S. presence on the island included a small group of uniformed military personnel tasked with helping Taiwan's forces bolster their own defenses. The Wall Street Journal reported recently the troops included a small group of Marines and special operations forces. Tsai did not say how many are there.

China's latest threats of a military invasion match prior rhetoric aimed at Taiwan but come at a time of growing concern in the West that Beijing feels new pressure to act. American officials and analysts believe China's military has never been more prepared to execute some form of military intervention, as its government has explicitly stated it is willing to do, and that growing international attention on the Taiwan issue means the opportunity is limited to respond with force.

"To avoid that disastrous outcome, the U.S. must recognize that China is a military threat — and conflict could come soon," Elbridge Colby, a former top Pentagon official for strategy development, wrote in an op-ed in The Wall Street Journal published late Wednesday.

Others wonder whether Beijing is prepared to endure the international condemnation and potentially crippling economic effect that would follow a unilateral military action.

China has previously claimed the presence of U.S. troops in Taiwan violates the set of agreements that has created a fragile diplomatic balance regarding the island nation since Washington officially recognized Beijing in 1979. The U.S., however, sees bolstering Taiwan's own defenses as critical to its policy of supporting the isolated democracy, recognized only by a dozen or so minor countries globally.

Both the Trump and Biden administrations stepped up that support while also strengthening the U.S.-led military presence in the region, including provocative naval exercises near China's maritime borders in international territory it considers its own. Beijing routinely cites these exercises – ostensibly to keep open international waterways – as evidence the U.S. and its allies challenge China's sovereignty.

This week, Secretary of State Antony Blinken called on U.N. nations to allow Taiwan greater participation in the international body, issuing a statement that also drew fury from China.

Milley: US 'absolutely' could defend Taiwan from China

By Ellen Mitchell - 11/03/21 01:30 PM EDT

"Speaking at the Aspen Security Forum, Milley said he did not expect China to attempt to seize the self-governing island in the next 24 months, but should it happen, U.S. forces “absolutely have the capability” to defend Taipei, “no question about that.”

Zhang Jun: Playing with Fire on the Taiwan Question is Bound to Fail

(From Chinese Mission to the United Nations)

    2021/10/29

"Ambassador Zhang said that there is only one China in the world. The Government of the People's Republic of China is the sole legal government representing the whole of China. Taiwan is an inalienable part of the Chinese territory. A total of 180 countries, including the US, have established diplomatic relations with China on the basis of commitment to the one-China principle. The one-China principle is a consensus of the international community and a widely recognized norm of international relations, which allows no challenge or distortion.

Ambassador Zhang pointed out that the UN is an inter-governmental organization composed of sovereign states. UNGA Resolution 2758 (XXVI) has solved once and for all the issue of China's representation in the UN in political, legal and procedural terms.

Taiwan, as part of China, is unqualified to join the UN. The UN system, its specialized agencies and the UN Secretariat should abide by the one-China principle and UNGA Resolution 2758 (XXVI) when dealing with Taiwan-related affairs. The meaning of the one-China principle and UNGA Resolution 2758 (XXVI) is very clear.

There is no room for political manipulation.

Ambassador Zhang stressed that the recent erroneous statements by the US, which sought to support Taiwan in expanding the so-called "international space", have sent wrong signals to "Taiwan independence" forces. China expresses its firm opposition to this.

The one-China principle allows no challenge and UNGA Resolution 2758 (XXVI) allows no distortion. Fifty years ago, the US failed in its attempt to create "two Chinas" or "one China, one Taiwan" in the UN.

If some country still backpedals in history today and tries to play with fire on the Taiwan question, it will only face an even bigger failure."

As a few has said already, the CCP are just racking up the hrs on the Taiwanese fighter jets. Not sure how much of an issue financially this is to Taiwan seeing they have half a trillion US$ in reserve and a highly developed free market economy (Yes I googled that one). The US and it's allies will probably just keep supplying them with jets are low cost if the CCP increase this strategy. Taiwan's defenses are formidable, their SAM's i read, are pretty f'ing badass. The CCP will not be invading anytime soon but their rhetoric that they will will increase as their domestic failures increase. In order for them to maintain control internally, they need to appear to be in control externally, that's how brainwashed they keep their citizens.

Off the OT a bit but, I conversed with a Chinese student the other day and asked how covid was going. His girl friend instantly crisscrossed her hands staring right past me and said, 'Chongqing have no covid', in quite an assertive psycho type brainwashed nazi youth kind of way. He then contributed with informing me that the reason that we in the west still have covid is because our vaccines don't work. This is what we and Taiwan are dealing with. USSR on Yabba

Desperate actions by a totalitarian state on the brink of mass-starvation due to their inadequacy to plan further than their little noses.

And yet another example of intruding on others' territory - and they wonder why no-one likes them

China plans to force Taiwan to negotiating table by 2027: Pentagon

TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — A Pentagon report released on Wednesday (Nov. 3) warns that China is planning to boost its military might to the point that it can force Taipei to negotiate on Beijing's terms by 2027.

On Wednesday, the Department of Defense released its annual report titled “Military and Security Developments Involving the People’s Republic of China." The report points out that a major new milestone for the People's Liberation Army (PLA) is 2027, when China plans to achieve the capability to force Taiwan to accept a negotiated surrender and prevent any military interference by U.S. forces.

According to the document, the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) last year set 2027 as its deadline for the PLA to modernize its armed forces by integrating "mechanization, informatization, and intelligentization" into its military machine. By that year, the 100th anniversary of the PLA's founding, it also plans to accelerate the modernization of its "military theories, organizations, personnel, and weapons and equipment."

Once China attains its modernization ambitions, it will provide the communist regime with "more credible military options in a Taiwan contingency." The paper cites China's state-run media as reporting that the PLA's goals for 2027 include obtaining the ability to blunt U.S. forces in the Indo-Pacific region and "compel Taiwan's leadership to the negotiating table on Beijing's terms."

Also high on the list of priorities for the PLA that year is having up to 700 nuclear warheads at its disposal. This number would swell to 1,000 by 2030, which would represent a greater and more rapid expansion in China's nuclear stockpile than the Pentagon predicted in 2020.

A question and the reply from the Chinese Foreign Ministry Press conference.

Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Zhao Lijian’s Regular Press Conference on December 20, 2021

    "China News Service:

In response to a question on December 17, US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan said that the US position on Taiwan is clear because it is a position that the US has sustained to maintain peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait for decades. It is rooted in the one-China policy, the Taiwan Relations Act, the three communiqués. The whole purpose of American policy toward Taiwan and toward cross-Strait relations is fundamentally designed to ensure that the US never faces a circumstance in which it needs to directly answer the question of whether the US will come to Taiwan’s aid in case of potential attack. He added that “we believe there is a formula that works to maintain the status quo” and “to not have unilateral changes to the status quo”. Do you have any response to that?

    Zhao Lijian:

We have noted relevant reports. China’s position on the Taiwan question is consistent and clear-cut. Here I would like to stress the following three points.

First, there is only one China in the world and Taiwan is part of China. This is not only a historical and legal fact that cannot be changed, but also a status quo that cannot be challenged. The DPP authorities refuse to recognize the 1992 Consensus that embodies the one-China principle, constantly provoke confrontation across the Taiwan Strait, and solicit US support for the purpose of seeking Taiwan independence. This is what changes the status quo and is also the source of tensions across the Taiwan Strait. Some forces in the US have obstinately manipulated the Taiwan question to contain China. They have emboldened the Taiwan independence forces and increased tensions across the Taiwan Strait.

Second, the one-China principle and the three China-US joint communiqués are the political foundation for the establishment of diplomatic ties and the steady development of bilateral relations between China and the US. The Taiwan Relations Act unilaterally fabricated by the US runs counter to its commitments made in the three joint communiqués, violates basic norms governing international relations, and places US domestic law above international obligations. It is illegal, null and void. What the US should earnestly abide by is the one-China principle and the provisions of the three China-US joint communiqués, rather than something cooked up unilaterally by itself.

Third, China’s complete reunification is unstoppable. The historical trend will not be changed by anyone, any force or any country. We urge the US side to take seriously China’s position and concerns, be cautious in words and deeds on Taiwan-related issues, stop military contacts with Taiwan, stop developing ties with Taiwan in essence, and stop sending any wrong signal to the Taiwan independence forces."

Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Zhao Lijian’s Regular Press Conference on December 20, 2021
