Fifty-nine people arrested at illegal birthday party in Bangkok, drugs also reportedl

Thai Commando Police raided an illegal birthday party at a hotel in Bang Khen early this morning (September 25th) where they reported that they found 59 people who were arrested for allegedly violating the Emergency Decree rules to prevent the spread of the Covid-19 coronavirus.

The raid at 1:30 A.M was at a hotel in Soi Ramintra 14 (Soi Maiyarap). The raid followed a phone tip being made to officers about the party from an anonymous citizen who was reportedly afraid the event could spread the Covid-19 coronavirus and felt they were protecting the health of the community by reporting the party.

Officers arrived at the hotel and stated to the press that they found 59 people in a VIP suite which were 29 men and 30 women attending the party and playing loud music. There was also, according to police, alcohol being consumed. Under current Covid-19 rules, any sort of parties or social events, like birthdays, are against emergency decree rules. Gathering around alcohol with more than one person in maximum control zones like Bangkok is also considered a violation of multiple disease control orders and the decree.

The event was, according to police, a birthday party for a man named to the press only as Mr. Bird, who also organized the event. Mr. Bird remained in custody as of press time and may face additional charges, according to law enforcement.

Police also reportedly found 61 pills of Esctasy and 8.53 grams of Ketamine on one party goer.

Colonel Apisan Chairat from the Special Operation Unit told the Thai press, “The person found with the drugs attending the party admitted the drugs were theirs, they also stated they obtained the drugs from a man named Mr. Tor. However, they claimed they were not dealing them and did not know how to contact or reach Mr. Tor. In fact, they claimed they didn’t have a single point of contact for Mr. Tor and that they just randomly met him. They were taken into custody for further interrogation. The name of the individual found with the illegal drugs has been withheld pending further interviews.”

“All 59 people tested negative for Covid – 19. We conducted rapid antigen tests this morning with the assistance of a local hospital. However, all 59 people were taken to the Kokkram Police Station to take drug tests and to face charges of violating the Emergency Decree laws to control Covid-19. They could face stiff fines in the tens of thousands of baht and extensive jail time.” Colonel Apisan stated.

TPN media notes a curfew between 9:00 P.M. to 4:00 A.M. has also been in place for several months in Bangkok. All nightlife, bars, and similar entertainment venues have been closed since early April, for almost six months. Parties, social gatherings (like birthdays and anniversaries), and similar events are all still illegal, according to police, regardless of the number of people attending. According to Colonel Apisan, they believe that parties are one of the single biggest potential super-spreaders of Covid-19.

Colonel Apisan did not immediately state if the hotel would be held liable or face any legal charges for the party. This is only the latest of several recent major raids across the country as multiple media sources report that the Royal Thai Police have asked for a renewed focus on cracking down on illegal parties, bars, and events due to Covid-19 rules.
