Thai Customs Department Prepares to Reduce Duty on Alcoholic Beverages and Cigars

BANGKOK (NNT) - Thailand’s Customs Department is preparing to reduce the duty charged on the import of alcoholic beverages and cigars by 50% for five years, in line with the government’s economic stimulus and investment promotion package.

Customs Department Director-General Patchara Anuntasilpa said the cuts are in accordance with the Cabinet resolution involving plans to revive the post-COVID-19 economy by encouraging wealthy foreigners and highly skilled professionals to stay and work in the country. The group is expected to spend on average 1 million baht per person per year while staying and working here.

He said about 30% of products are likely to be covered by the planned cuts and ministerial regulations will be announced after the changes are made. The scheme is hoped to draw more than a million qualified people to Thailand over the next five years and generate about a trillion baht over the period.

Mr. Patchara added that the department is also preparing to revise custom procedures for personal items of arriving and departing passengers.

The well heeled and expats will drink regardless, I seldom have more than a glass of wine with dinner if the bottle costs $30 at present or $10 or $100 won't alter my consumption as a negligible expenditure.

However for the Chang and Sangsom set wit a ltd pay packet Friday night theyll still spend 500 baht on a session and not a glass of Merlot or one shot of single malt , it'll be 2 bottles of Hong thong or Regency or similar gutrot instead of 1.

Be careful what you wish for. All drunk drivers invalidate their insurance so when the vicitms end up in hospital the perps dont pay the bill.

Good stuff. Paying for a decent bottle of vino in Los is painful. Here, you can get cheap but OK stuff cheaper than drinking the equivalent in beer.

Do they just go to the local kindergarten and ask a kid to tell them a big number.

It certainly is. I enjoy a glass of wine or three and I'd enjoy it a lot more if it was half the price.

This is perhaps the first government proposal this year that has my full support.

I love these announcements. They keep making them and none ever actually happen. Do they think the world is really just sitting around going "HOLY CRAP...Look at all the concessions Thailand is doing". I think not.

This latest deal would be nice however I suspect that not one place will reduce their prices. To them they might just happen onto a free 50% margin increase. I wouldn't go out and buy a new Cork Screw set just yet....
