Major fire causes serious damage to Walking Street nightclub in Pattaya

A major fire broke out last night during mandatory Covid-19 curfew hours at a closed nightclub on Walking Street in Pattaya, causing an estimated millions of baht in damage according to fire officials.

The fire took place at the Nashaa nightclub, located on the South end of Walking Street near Bali Hai Pier at about 9:30 P.M. on Sunday evening, September 12th.

There were no injuries reported from the furious blaze although a significant reason why is due to a current curfew from 9:00 P.M. to 4:00 A.M. due to Covid-19 related precautions in Chonburi. Additionally, nightclubs and entertainment have been closed for over five months in Pattaya by mandate to “prevent the spread of Covid-19.”

Over ten units from local fire departments were dispatched to fight the inferno which could be seen from several kilometers away and was widely reported over social media, with many residents concerned about the source and ferocity of the fire.

It took just over an hour to put the fire out with the assistance of a fire crane and ladder, as seen below, and as of press time portions of the building were still smoldering from embers with smoke trails visible in the area as firefighters secured the building and inspected the damage. Heavy winds in the area and the building having many flammable objects used as decorations contributed to the spread of the blaze, according to firefighters, which at one point encompassed the entire sprawling nightclub complex which is composed of multiple levels and areas. However, firefighters had managed to largely stop the fire from spreading to other businesses on the closely packed Walking Street strip.

Could be a few of such places ablaze over the next few weeks.

    Hope they're insured.

That's the first step to ensure (prior to setting the place on fire).

If the property was adjacent to the beach it is likely it was scheduled to be demolished in due course anyway. It had no future.

Flooded last week and on fire this week.

The entertainment industry has had a horrible past 3 years which started with the tourist drop off and then covid.

That old chestnut, been doing the rounds since I came here in 2006 and mostly likely many many years prior.

And yet they are all still there, if there was a time to bring in the dozers the current Covid era is it... when are they starting ?

Can anyone confirm there is a real beach with sand under those buildings? More likely all boulders bought in to stop the building being washed away.

UPDATE: Pattaya Mayor inspects Walking Street nightclub after weekend fire, cause still under investigation

The Pattaya City Mayor inspected the Nashaa nightclub today after a major fire devastated the building on Pattaya Walking Street over the past weekend.

First, a recap of our coverage so far:

Today, (September 14th), a team of authorities led by Mayor Sonthaya Kunplome inspected the fire area.

Mr. Sonthaya told Pattaya News reporters, “First, we have to say thank you to firefighters and relevant volunteers who quickly helped to control the fire at the nightclub. If it wasn’t for their hard work many other buildings in the Walking Street area could have caught fire, causing much more devastation and destruction. Although entertainment and nightlife are currently closed in Pattaya due to Covid-19, many of these buildings have people living and residing in them still. The quick work of firefighters potentially saved many lives and businesses.”

“However, this incident has affected some feelings on local tourism overall and driven many false rumors and speculation on social media about the cause. On the other hand, this incident has shown that we care for everything that has happened here and will come together to recover.” The Mayor continued.

TPN notes that Nashaa nightclub released a statement on their social media asking people not to speculate or raise false gossip or rumors about the cause of the fire until a full investigation had been completed.

“From this fire incident we have also learned that fire crane trucks could not easily reach the fire area because of signs in front of businesses. We have to fix this and this issue has come up before. We will be discussing this further as a city and as part of future plans for Walking Street in terms of large signs extending over the narrow street. We also have identified the issues with power lines and transformers on the street potentially complicating the situation, however, an already ongoing plan to move these cables underground will help resolve this problem.” The Mayor concluded.

Meanwhile, a team from the Forensic Police led by Major General Tanong Thongpradappet went to the scene and collected more evidence.

Major General Tanong told Pattaya News reporters, “The nightclub staffers have pointed out the area that they believed started the fire. The nightclub staff said they saw the fire originally break out at a storage room that contains alcohol on the second floor.”

TPN media notes that although the nightclub was closed due to Covid-19 precautions, staff, primarily employed as watchmen and security, were on duty when the fire took place. They were the first individuals to report the fire to authorities after failing to put out the blaze with extinguishers. Luckily, nobody was injured or hurt during the inferno.
