Couple held by police as search resumes for missing girl in Chiang Mai

A couple is being been held in police custody for questioning in connection with the search for a 23-month-old girl, who went missing from a remote village in Mae Taeng district of Thailand’s northern province of Chiang Mai on Sunday night.

The 44-year-old Akha man is a neighbour of the missing girl’s father. He and his wife were separately questioned by police for several hours yesterday, after which both were detained on charges of illegal entry.

A blanket search for the child known as “Gina”, involving several local police, border patrol police, volunteers and villagers of Huay Fak Dab in Intakin sub-district, resumed today after massive search yesterday, which was called off at night.

The village head said today divers from a search and rescue unit took part in the search of a pond near the village yesterday, but didn’t find any trace of the child.

He suspects that the toddler might have been kidnapped by someone who knew her and her family, noting that the child normally would not allow strangers to hug her.

Police, also suspecting that the child may have been lost in the woods, have been examining CCTV footage from along the road linking Mae Taeng with Chiang Dao districts, to identify cars travelling on the road from 10am to 7pm on Sunday.

Meanwhile, the Mirror Foundation, which is dedicated to the search for missing children in Thailand, said in a Facebook post today that the girl’s family settled in Ban Huay Fak Dab village not long ago and some residents in the village of about 100 households might not know them.

The child went missing sometime between 6pm and 7pm on Sunday evening, when her mother was preparing food in the kitchen while her father was out disposing of garbage.

The foundation said the remote village is surrounded by mountains and forests and is far from the district’s township, but some vendors’ cars occasionally arrive at the village.

It also said that, about four years ago, a two-year-old child went missing from home in Chiang Mai and the victim has not been found since.

    Erm....

CHIANG MAI: A young girl missing from her home in a remote village has been found safe in a hut where she was abandoned by her abductor as a sacrifice to the spirits of the forest and mountains.

Rescuers found 23-month-old Phonsiri "Nong Gina" Wongsilarung on Wednesday morning, about three kilometres from her home, Thai media reports said.

They were led to the cave by a man who confessed on Wednesday morning that he had kidnapped her on Sunday night.

Pacific news agency also reported that Nong Gina's mother had confirmed she was found alive and safe in an abandoned hut in a banana plantation.

Provincial police chief Pol Maj Gen Pichet Jiranantasin said earlier on Wednesday the man had given directions and was accompanying rescuers on their way to the cave. They hoped to find the girl alive. he said.

The girl's disappearance from her home in Ban Huay Fak Dap in tambon Inthanin of Mae Taeng district sparked a huge search.

The suspect was identified only as Siew, 44, a Myanmar national and friend of the girl's father, Suriya Wongsilaruang. He had been detained for questioning as a prime suspect.

Pol Maj Gen Pichet said Mr Siew confessed he took the girl from the village and abandoned her in front of a cave about three kilometres from the village, as a sacrifice to the spirits of the forest and mountains.

Mr Siew had confessed on Wednesday morning after two days of intense interrogation during which he had been evasive about giving information, Pol Maj Gen Pichet said.

Mr Siew insisted he had not killed the girl. He said he left her in front of the cave and returned to the village.

Pol Maj Gen Pichet said rescuers were aking
<sic> Mr Siew witrh <sic> them to the cave where he said he abandoned "Nong Gina", hoping the girl was still alive and safe.

Sounds a few sandwiches short of a picnic.

I'm confused. Two days of interrogation, plus time before getting apprehended.

He left a 23 month old at the cave entrance 2, 3 days. Correct me if I'm wrong but wouldn't an unattended infant wander off as soon as they got scared, tired, or hungry?

Three held in ‘Nong Gina’ probe

BANGKOK: Three people have been detained for questioning in connection with the disappearance of a toddler, since safely recovered and relocated, as police suspect she was abducted by a trafficking network.

A source said the investigation into the kidnapping of 23-month-old Phonsiri ‘Nong Gina’ Wongsilarung is focused on the trafficking ring. Two men and one woman are in police custody, reports the Bangkok Post.

The case is being handled by Mae Taeng police and investigators from Chiang Mai provincial police bureau and Provincial Police Region 5.

Nong Gina went missing from her home in Ban Huay Fak Dap in tambon Inthanin of Mae Taeng district on Sunday night.

She was found safe and sound on Wednesday morning in an abandoned hut in a banana plantation about three kilometres from her home, after a Myanmar national, identified only as Siew, 44, confessed to taking the child to a cave also about three kilometres from the village as a sacrifice to the spirits of the forest and mountains.

Mr Siew was identified as a friend of the girl’s father, Suriya Wongsilarung.

The source said the detainees also claimed that Nong Gina was a specific target of the trafficking network and police are looking into the claim.

The investigators along with social workers plan to interview ‘Nong Junior’, the girl’s brother, who claimed he was present when his sister was taken away, according to the source.

Capt Nathapon Kaewkamnerd, chief of the Mae Taeng Police, said officers suspect Mr Siew did not act alone in the girl’s disappearance and he will face a charge of taking a minor from her parents.

He said police suspect the girl was kidnapped and hidden some place before she was taken to the abandoned hut after the case drew nationwide attention. It is unclear how much weight they still place by claims she was abducted for a sacrifice to the spirits.

Meanwhile, Mr Suriya said his daughter, who suffered from exhaustion and had small cuts and insect bites, is getting better and mental health specialists will assess her later.

He said the family is relieved to have her back and will leave the investigation in the hands of police.

According to the Mirror Foundation’s Missing Persons Information Centre, Thailand has no known case about child abduction for spiritual sacrifice.

Most cases of missing children are related to trafficking for commercial exploitation or family conflicts, it said.

    That makes more sense.

I bet the girl was abducted by human traffickers , and when the scheme fell apart the "Sacrifice to the forest spirit" story was concocted by the person who was cough ,to reduce legal liability to himself and protect higher ups.

^ That sounds like a more reasonable account of the events. We've wrapped up another case.

As well, someone was caring for the infant and she wasn't alone for days in a hut. Serious jail terms for all involved, maybe.
