Thailand expects more rain as tropical storm Conson moves closer

BANGKOK (NNT) - The Meteorological Department is closely monitoring the development of tropical storm Conson expected to move into the South China Sea this week, while a monsoonal trough and influence from yet another emerging storm is expected to cause more rain in the upper east regions of Thailand from tomorrow.

The Meteorological Department has forecast heavy rain in the central, eastern, and lower northeastern regions from tomorrow, caused by a trough that is expected to strengthen from this evening.

Meanwhile, the northeastern region is expected to see more rain this weekend from the influence of an emerging storm, which will not directly pass through the country.

The Meteorological Department is now closely monitoring the development of tropical storm Conson, which is expected to move in a northwesterly direction from central parts of the Philippines to the South China Sea on 9th-10th September.

Provinces in the eastern region, particularly Chanthaburi and Trat, should be on high alert for possible flash floods. A warning has also been posted for Rayong and Chonburi to expect torrential rainfall.

Thailand’s capital Bangkok is now expected to see rain covering 70% of the metropolitan area in coming days, with heavy rain expected in some areas.

Heavy rainfall in the upper regions of Thailand is now raising the water level in the Chao Phraya River, and posing a flood risk.

The Minister of Agriculture and Cooperatives Chalermchai Srion, has ordered the Royal Irrigation Department (RID) to strictly implement measures in the 2021 rainy season water management plan, and ensuring the preparedness of all irrigation projects to benefit from the rainy season.

He urged the RID to perform an advance situation assessment to help prevent flooding, and to follow up on water management plans for various water resources in the country.

This is normal for Thailand. The natives are resilient, and used to dealing with it, sometimes in prosaic but inventive ways.

Rain every day here in Khon Kaen. I drain my goldfish pond every day.
Our area is high and dry, but as it continues I can see problems with flooding in some areas . Weather calls for good chance of rain every day this week.

Sit under the verandah and tape water bottles together to form a raft.

We are less than a 100k from you, west of Udon Thani and have had the driest "rainy" season I have witnessed in my 30+ years here, pool has never been full, first time ever, to be hoped we get some of the rain!

That is odd. Nongbualamphu cannot be far from you. Here we have had a good bit of rain, not too much, just right. The rice farmers are fairly happy, I think. Plenty of water, no floods. A Goldilocks year.

Monsoon trough causing rain across country

BANGKOK (NNT) - Almost every region of Thailand is seeing heavy rain this week, emanating from a monsoon trough across the country. A warning has been posted for 16 provinces over possible flooding due to heavy rain.

The monsoon trough over Thailand’s northern, central, eastern, and northeastern region is developing into a low-pressure system over the South China Sea, together with moderate seasonal monsoonal winds. It is now causing an increase in precipitation in the northern, northeastern, eastern, central, and southern regions, as well as the Greater Bangkok Area.

Torrential rain is expected today in Khon Kaen, Chaiyaphum, Nakhon Ratchasima, Buriram, Nakhon Sawan, Lopburi, Saraburi, Singburi, Ang Thong, Ayutthaya, Nakhon Nayok, Prachinburi, Chonburi, Rayong, Chanthaburi, and Trat. Villagers in these 16 provinces are warned of potential harm from heavy rains and possible flash floods.

Less rain is expected during 11-17 September as the monsoonal trough is forecast to move in a northerly direction, prevailing over the northern and lower-northeastern regions instead.

Meanwhile, tropical storm Conson currently in the central parts of the Philippines is now moving in a northwesterly direction, and is expected to enter the South China Sea tomorrow.

The storm is expected to move over China’s Hainan island into the Gulf of Tonkin off Vietnam’s coast.

At the same time, Typhoon Chanthu formed in the Pacific Ocean east of the Philippines is now heading towards Taiwan.

The Meteorological Department says these two storms are not having any effect on Thailand at the moment, while urging the public to keep themselves updated with the department’s latest announcements and warnings.

It rains often this year in CM, no OTT heavy rain but quite more frequently than last year.

Not much flooding in my area (Mae Jo), appart from the usual drain clogs here and there that doesn't take much to be sorted out.

It is odd! Nong Bua and Nong Khai plenty of rain, were in the middle and had little, lousy year for rice farmers, I live by a reservoir, not much water in it!

It was the same here a couple of weeks ago. Rice fields were dry, last couple of weeks they look good.
Now I have to drain my goldfish pond every day. Three of my big fancy goldfish died (one every day) . The guppies mollies and catfish seem to be doing great. I wonder if all this rain is changing the PH or something else. Later today I will go buy a PH test kit. And ask the guy at the fish store for his opinion.

The monsoon is moving to the west now, wont be long before we are into the cool season, rainwater is usually ~5.5 slightly acidic, don't know what fish like, guessing more towards neutral ~7 ?

Looking forward to the cooler season!! I am sure you are too.
Raining cats and dogs here now. Well being Thailand , raining mostly dogs LOL
Yea, having heard of acid rain I was thinking the same. I need to test, then find out if these fancy goldfish are sensitive, and if the water is Acidic, how to adjust it.

I'm ready for the cooler weather, been a long hot season this year! PH can be adjusted with baking soda or soda ash, theres a good pool supply shop in Nong Bua where I get my chemicals from.

Pattaya hit by heavy overnight storms, suffers widespread flooding and damage

Heavy rain in Pattaya and Banglamung area at night yesterday caused localized flooding on many Pattaya and Banglamung roads. Residents spent most of the daytime hours of Wednesday cleaning up, however, more storms are expected over this upcoming weekend.

Several days of torrential rain and the potential of flash flooding are forecast to take place according to the Thai Meteorological Department (TMD).

A heavy storm that hit Pattaya overnight yesterday, September 8th, caused localized flooding on many Pattaya and Banglamung roads.

The heavy downpour lasted for many hours. Significantly deep water was found on road surfaces about 30 to 70 centimeters high.

Some of the areas in Pattaya that suffered flooding were in front of the Pattaya City Highway Police Station, South Pattaya Road, North Pattaya, Naklua Soi Buakhao, Soi Khao Noi, Soi Nern Plubwan, and the road near the railway in Eastern Pattaya.

Due to Covid-19 restrictions which include an overnight curfew, there was little traffic on the local roads.

Many items, as seen below, were found floating through the floodwaters and some roads were blocked off temporarily.

More rain is forecast for the next several days. Meanwhile, Jomtien Beach Road suffered significant damage from the recent storms as well.
