Sinovac not a low-quality vaccine, Chinas embassy hits back at critics

Chinas embassy in Bangkok on Friday issued a statement on its Facebook page, rebutting the accusations of some people that Sinovac vaccine is low quality and ineffective.

“The Chinese government delivered Sinovac vaccine to Thailand at the first chance we could to help the country fight Covid-19, although the vaccine demand in China was still high and the production capability was still inadequate,” said the embassy.

“Every dose of vaccine sent by China represents the goodwill and friendship that China has maintained with Thailand for a long time.

“The vaccines sent by the Chinese government have been approved by the World Health Organization in its emergency use list and has passed clinical trials as required by the Thailand Food and Drug Administration standards,” said the embassy.

“They are safe, effective and have been fully certified in terms of quality.”

The embassy added that a clinical study in Chile has revealed that Sinovac vaccine is over 86 per cent effective in preventing severe symptoms and deaths among Covid-19 patients, while a study by the Indonesian government has shown that the vaccine is up to 95 per cent effective.

“However, there are certain people and parties in Thailand who are accusing Sinovac of being a low-quality vaccine that lacks efficacy against Covid-19,” added the embassy. “This accusation completely ignores scientific evidence and is harming China’s goodwill for Thailand. The embassy would like to urge such people and parties to stop this dreadful action.

“China is willing to continue helping Thailand in the fight against Covid-19 with the sincerity and mutual goodwill that both countries share. We wish that Thailand can overcome this crisis and return to normal as soon as possible,” added the embassy.

Oh. This is what got them worked up and defensive.

As part of new vaccine strategy, purchase of Sinovac to be wound down

The Public Health Ministry will slow down the purchase of Sinovac vaccine through the rest of the year in order to focus on vaccines that can be administered to children.

“The ministry will buy only 12 million doses of Sinovac in the rest of this year, which will be used for the Sinovac-AstraZeneca combo vaccination,” Dr Sopon Iamsirithaworn, deputy director-general of the Disease Control Department, said on Friday.

“Once the stock of Sinovac is depleted, an AstraZeneca-Pfizer combo will be used, while the non-combo vaccination would be either two doses of AstraZeneca or two doses of Pfizer.”

Sopon added that the reason for slowing down the purchase of Sinovac is not because the vaccine was less effective, but the ministry would focus on procuring vaccines that are safe for children.

“We will not buy more of the current Sinovac vaccine unless there is a study proving it can be safely administered to children,” he said. “Furthermore, the ministry is waiting for a new formula of Sinovac vaccine that is currently under development specifically for the new virus variants, as the current vaccine had been developed from the Wuhan virus.”

When asked about a social media post that receiving three jabs of vaccine could cause lymphoma, Sopon said that there was currently no conclusive information to prove the contention. “However, the immune system could be at risk of abnormal cell division if it were overly stimulated. We will need to study further to confirm the long-term effects of getting a third jab,” he said.

I haven't got a dawg in this fight, and it certainly seems that Sinovac has less efficacy than the other Covid vaccines, including Sinopharm. But then there is the strange case of Chile, which has been remarkably effective in it's campaign against Covid- using mainly Sinovac.

Chilean study shows variations in success of COVID-19 vaccines | Reuters

The lesson, as I see it, is get the jabs out hard and fast- and quit quibbling about the different vaccines and their efficacy, or hospitalisation rates, etc etc- as has certainly been the case here in Oz. My case studies are Chile, and China.

You can always top up with your dream vaccine later.

China has lockdowns. Literal "nail them in the apartment" lockdowns.

As for Chile, no mention of Delta:

"SANTIAGO, Aug 3 (Reuters) - Sinovac's COVID-19 vaccine was 58.5% effective in preventing symptomatic illness among millions of Chileans who received it between February and July, the Chilean health authorities said on Tuesday, while Pfizer's COVID-19 shot was 87.7% effective and AstraZeneca's was 68.7% effective."

    <snip>

In April, the same study found that CoronaVac was 67% effective in preventing symptomatic illness, 85% effective in preventing hospitalizations and 80% effective in preventing deaths, suggesting its capacity to prevent the more serious impacts of the virus has strengthened, while its capacity to stop symptomatic illness diminished.
The moral of the story is take it if there is nothing else on offer. It's better than nothing.

Wait if you can. A hopefully better safer product is on the horizon. " Thailand’s plant-based Covid-19 vaccine ready for phase 1 trials" Widely reported in the last day or 2 in the Thai media.

In the absence of better solutions the Sinovac vaccine is fine IMO.
If covid 19 was less dangerous than the common cold it would have been of no consequence and most people would wave not even herd about it. If the sinovac vaccine is as affective as the data seems to show, (80% plus reduction on serious symptoms) then Sinovac renders covid 19 less dangerous than the common cold IMO .
So , until better options are available , take what's available, don't let the perfect be the enemy of the good. and an 80% or more reduction on getting sick is good IMO.
The sooner you fall behind, the more time you have to catch up.

Compared to China, I am sure it is. But this is Oz, and having been dicked around on several offshore internet purchases before- I ain't counting the pennies Cuj. Loadsa fun, anyway- I'm a happy enough bunny.

P.S, Sinoguru- I wouldn't mind adding a front basket, or pannier to the damn thing- for carrying shopping, or whatever. Any thoughts? It certainly doesn't lack power/ torque, battery life, or load capacity.
