Thai Tourism Sector Expects 500,000 Russian Visitors after Endorsement of Sputnik V V

BANGKOK (NNT) - The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) hopes to add 500,000 Russian visitors to its 1 million international tourists this year, after the Centre for COVID-19 Situation Administration (CCSA) allowed tourists inoculated with the Sputnik V vaccine to visit “sandbox” destinations in the country.

TAT governor Yuthasak Supasorn said Russia was one of the country’s tourism sources with 1.4 million visitors per year prior to the pandemic. An influx of Russian tourists to Greece and Turkey during the pandemic proves that there’s demand in this market.

He said the agency previously forecast of 1.2 million international tourists this year but, due to a resurgence of COVID-19 everywhere, that number may drop to 1 million.

According to the TAT, the Russians are expected to start visiting “sandbox” areas by October at the earliest, as charter flights will need one month to prepare operations and group bookings. The TAT will also contact other airlines to arrange scheduled flights to Phuket, as 50% of Russians, mostly individual travelers, book their own tickets.

This year. I'd like to see what kind of crystal ball he has. Tourist arrivals in the first 6 months of 2021 were about 6,000 per month on average:

That points to an annual total of about 72,000 plus whatever the Phuket Sandbox can generate, Shall we say 100,000? Not even sniffing distance of 1 million.

Let's suppose they start flooding in on October 1st. Then there would need to be 5,000 Russian arrivals every day until the year end to get close to a total of 500,000 for the year. That is 5,000 per day, when the rest of the world is racking up 200 per day. For context, the US military are currently moving about 5,000 people a day out of Kabul using military transport planes.

It wouldn't be entirely incredible if the Rouble were stronger. Despite the Baht's slide it still sits at about 0.45 Baht, whereas 5 years ago the Russians could get 0.60 Baht. They are 25% worse off than they used to be. That'll make them want to come here.

It will be good for the economy as long as some make the trip. I personally have holidayed in Turkey amongst the Russian masses and I have to say that they are not the easiest of people to rub along with. If Phuket fills up with Russians then there will be others who choose to go elsewhere.
