I hope the General is going to Phuket to show how he single-handedly led the efforts to "nab" the suspect.

Sadly, It is still not possible for women to venture out alone safely and I doubt it will ever be. There will always be predators who prey on the weak. Many women that come from relatively safe countries unfortunately fail to see the increased danger in other countries and do not take their personal safety seriously enough. Some unfortunately see the world as they wish it to be rather than the way it is.
I think they just see less danger in physically unimposing men who smile more - not in increased danger compared to their own countries in examples like this. I don't think the danger was increased in this specific example.
Yes, probably just about everyone does this on holiday. 99.9% of the time without such a horrifying result.
The danger was increased just by being there. Thailand is actually a rather dangerous & violent country once you get past the superficial smiles. Higher gun crime rate than the USA, higher road rage and traffic deaths, almost non-existent policing of laws unless easily solved or high profile. The list is endless.
Add into that the apocalypse-type situation covid has brought to the island (which one has to see themselves to really appreciate) and its tinderbox.
I can understand Slick's comment. Parts of the West coast tourist areas have a movie set feel about them, along the lines of "I am Legend", eeringly quiet. Deserted streets and boarded up and nearly derelict buildings, and the inhabitants having an almost 'survivors' appearance about them.
Post-apocalyptic, then?

OK - everywhere's dead.
Gotcha.
