The flash flood crisis in major areas of Tak, Thailand’s northern province, which has resulted in mudslides, over 200 households being affected, and people running for their lives, is now “improving”, an official from the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM) told Thai Enquirer on Thursday.

“So far the situation has improved as of today except for the areas in Baan Mai,” said Natthapol Suwanwet, the Head of the DDPM in Tak. “But everything is still being closely monitored.”

Natthapol’s comments, however, contradict the stories and footage still being shared online by local media and netizens alike, which showcase how dire the situation really is.

Netizens, for example, have been using the hashtag #น้ำท่วมแม่สอด, or flooding in Mae Sot (a district in Tak), to raise awareness on the situation.

“People are still struggling. They are saying that there are still no signs of the governor,” a Twitter user pointed out. “Please follow the situation closely everyone, so that we can pressure the officials in charge and get them to work on the situation.”
