Suspected thief arrested after allegedly breaking into six Chonburi area homes

A suspected serial thief has been arrested after he allegedly broke into six houses in a row in Chonburi yesterday morning.

The Mueang Chonburi Police were notified by a village headman in Nongree, Mueang Chonburi early yesterday morning about the suspect’s alleged actions. (July 18th).

The suspect, Mr. Kaset Cheewong, 24, was reportedly caught by local residents and the village headman, Mr. Pairat Withi, before Kaset was sent to police. Mueang Chonburi Police seized a bluetooth speaker worth more than 5,000 baht and tools that appeared to be used to assist in breaking into private property.

Mr. Kaset reportedly told police, “I was a security guard but now I am unemployed due to Covid-19 measures and restrictions that shut my place of employment. There are no jobs in the area, everything has been shut or restricted or isn’t hiring because there are no customers. I don’t have any money to buy food and the government has provided no assistance or money. What choice do I have?”

“I broke into six houses but only got 200 baht, the Bluetooth speaker, and some other small items. I wanted to sell this as I need money to buy food. I know it’s wrong, but I felt I had no other choice.”

The village headman told Mueang Chonburi police, “Locals told me that Kaset broke into their houses. They have CCTV footage clearly showing the suspect’s face. We were patrolling around the village before spotting and identifying Kaset. He was caught with several stolen items and had, according to him, just finished robbing another home.”

The suspect was taken to the Mueang Chonburi Police Station facing multiple charges of theft.

I wonder how peaceful this citizens arrest was, did he get a light beating prior to going to the station?

I'd let this chap off with a slap on the wrist.

And in the meantime ensure he has access to food.

As far as I can tell from my vantage point over here it seems the Thai government has not made adequate provisions of food and other resources for the poorest.

Before you get down on willy would you answer me this question? How is he a hero? He stole from 6 separate houses. How would you feel if he broke into your house?

Some of youse folks take things far too seriously. Many spend their time here basically lobbing shit at one another, I try for a light hearted comment and the usual suspects dump shit. That'll learn me I suppose.

You posted this, and then responded with this when called out?

Bullshit, there is nothing light hearted about a house robbery, let alone 6.

You've gotta credit the guy with some genius, in a Thai way. How did he find five unoccupied houses to burgle, during Lockdown?

My guess would be townhouses. Get in one, you have access to the whole row.

People do have the right to the basics of life, i.e food in their stomach and a dry roof to sleep under. If those fundamental rights are threatened then folks will do what they must to eat. I'm a bit tired of reading the stories here, and there have been a few, of people committing suicide because government regulations have deprived them of a livelihood.

I don't know what this man's circumstance was but he wasn't violent and if he was without food, then a slap on the wrist I think, under the circumstances would be adequate. It's really not a black and white world as many seem to imagine.

Going easy on this guy doesn't have to set any kind of precedent suggesting breaking into houses is in any way okay as it's clearly not.

So look AO, what would you consider an ample punishment for this 'crime of the millenium'

What about the right to protection of one's one property?

If threatened then do what they must?

No society, even a communist one accepts thieves or robbers.

A wishy washy liberal attitude. No punishment and no rehabilitation!
Any measures should be decided by the village. They know him, and they have suffered because of his actions.

He is a 24 year old who had a biff job. His family let him down, and the education system is a joke.

With a backward 3rd world government system, it’s no surprise the system helped him to fuck up. You know very well that the only welfare net in many Asian countries is the family. Right or wrong, they must share the blame for his wayward behavior too.
Your attempt at humour is a very poor one.
