U.S. leaves its last Afghan base, effectively ending operations

This is as much a tragedy as them going in there in the first place. What a colossal waste of effort, money and lives.

KABUL, Afghanistan — U.S. troops and their Western allies have departed the U.S. military base that coordinated the sprawling war in Afghanistan, officials said Friday, effectively ending major U.S. military operations in the country after nearly two decades.

For generations of U.S. service members, the military hub, Bagram Airfield, was a gateway to and from a war that cut across constant changes on the battlefield and in presidential administrations. But the final withdrawal overnight Thursday occurred with little fanfare and no public ceremony, and in an atmosphere of grave concern over the Afghan security forces’ ability to hold off Taliban advances across the country.

The U.S. exit was completed quickly enough that some looters managed to get into the base before being arrested, Afghan officials said.

The Defense Ministry says that 224 Taliban were killed in Afghan forces operations in the last 24 hours.

Sources said Saturday that the control of 13 districts – 11 districts in northeastern Afghanistan, one in the east and one in the south – have fallen to the Taliban in the last 24 hours, the highest number of areas falling to the group in a day.

The districts include Kishm, Darayim, Tishkan, Tagab, Wardooj, Shahr-e-Bozorg, Raghistan, Jorm and Yaftal in Badakhshan, Kalafgan and Farkhar districts in Takhar, Zurmat district in Paktia and Shah Wali Kot district in the southern province of Kandahar.

In Badakhshan, three other districts – Yumgan, Arghanjkwah and Khash – recently fell to the Taliban.

Some residents of Faizabad city, the center of Badakhshan province, said that clashes between security forces and the Taliban have reached closer to the city, leaving the people with concerns about their safety.

“This is the 10th district that collapses one after another. The local government and the central government have forgotten them and are not paying attention to them,” said Saed Hayatullah, a resident of Faizabad.

Over 300 Afghan troops fleeing from Taliban cross over to neighboring Tajikistan after heavy fighting, border forces tell media

    3 Jul, 2021 21:18 / Updated 4 hours ago

"Several hundred Afghan border troops were forced to seek shelter in next door Tajikistan on Saturday, fleeing a major offensive by the Taliban, which has intensified its attacks amid the withdrawal of US troops from the country. More than a dozen districts, mostly in Afghanistan’s northeastern Badakhshan Province, have fallen into the hands of the notorious Islamist militants over the past 24 hours, security sources told local outlet TOLOnews.

The heavy fighting on the other side of the border was also confirmed by the military of neighboring Tajikistan, a former Soviet republic which is a member of the Collective Security Treaty Organization. This is a Russian-led alternative to NATO.

More than 300 Afghan frontier troops had to cross into Tajik territory to avoid heavy losses amid clashes with the advancing militants, the press service of Tajikistan’s border forces told news agency RIA Novosti.

The foreign servicemen were allowed to enter “in line with the principles of humanity and good neighborliness,” it added.

The press service confirmed that the border with Afghanistan remained under the full control of Tajik forces.

The Afghan defense ministry said that, despite retreating, the government troops managed to kill at least 224 Taliban militants on Saturday.

“The security and defense forces of Afghanistan will not spare any efforts” to retake the areas that have been recently seized by the Taliban, Ministry Spokesman Fawad Aman promised.

The Taliban has intensified its activities after the US began the withdrawal of its forces from Afghanistan following a two-decade-long stay in the country. On Friday, the Americans abandoned the Bagram Airfield, which used to be their largest Afghan base. US President Joe Biden previously set a September 11 deadline for the pullout to be completed."

Taliban captures key Kandahar district as Afghan troops suffer wave of defeats in wake of US withdrawal

    4 Jul, 2021 12:22

"The Taliban has seized a key district in Kandahar province after pushing Afghan troops out of the area, adding to a growing list of victories against government forces amid the US military’s exit from the country. The militant group took the Panjwai district following a fierce overnight battle with soldiers loyal to Kabul, AFP reported, citing regional officials. Panjwai District Governor Hasti Mohammad said government troops retreated from the area following the clashes, and that the Taliban had seized the district police headquarters as well as the governor’s office building. Kandahar Provincial Council head Sayed Jan Khakriwal confirmed the fall of Panjwai, but accused Afghan forces of "intentionally withdrawing.”

The district has seen regular fighting between Taliban and Afghan forces over the years, due to its strategically significant proximity to Kandahar city, the provincial capital. Capturing Panjwai may have more than just military significance for the Taliban, as the group traces its roots to Kandahar.

The insurgents’ territorial gains in the southern province come just two days after US-led forces pulled out of one of the coalition’s main military hubs in the country, Bagram Air Base, located near Kabul. The United States has accelerated its withdrawal from Afghanistan in recent weeks, while some NATO allies have already fully exited from the war-torn nation.

The pullout comes as Afghan forces suffer a string of defeats at the hands of the Taliban. The insurgents claim to have captured more than 100 out of Afghanistan’s nearly 400 districts, amid an uptick in fighting that has coincided with the US military’s exit. Kabul has disputed these figures, while acknowledging that government forces have pulled out from some districts.

On Saturday, several hundred Afghan border troops sought refuge in neighboring Tajikistan after a major offensive by the Taliban. More than a dozen districts, mostly in Afghanistan’s northeastern Badakhshan Province, have fallen into the hands of the insurgents over the past 24 hours, according to local media citing security sources.

President Joe Biden refused to answer questions on Friday about the US pullout and the worsening security situation in Afghanistan, telling reporters that he wanted to talk about “happy things.”

The Trump administration had originally brokered a deal that called for a full withdrawal by May, but Biden extended the deadline until September 11. However, most of the remaining US forces in the country are expected to leave by July 4. Around 1,000 regular soldiers are slated to remain and guard the US Embassy complex in Kabul and the capital’s international airport. Special forces troops may also continue anti-terrorism operations in the country"

Yes, probably now China and to an extent Russia gonna come in, and build mines. And roads and bridges leading to those mines. And assistance with schools, and vocational training. And then be accused by the US of cultural genocide, and predatory lending. Think I would prefer to ask the Afghans instead.

Dozens of Ghor Women Take Up Arms in Support of ANDSF

Dozens of women took up arms – some of them heavy weapons – and marched in the capital city of Feroz Koh to pledge their support the Republic and the Afghan National Defense and Security Forces.

The women said that the historical record of the five years of the Taliban regime proved that the group violates women’s rights.

Thousands of people have taken up arms in support of the Afghan forces as the fall of districts to the group continues.

“They are standing by their brothers and are supporting the system, the people, and the country’s sovereignty,” a Ghor resident said.

The exact number of those who have taken up arms against the Taliban is so far not clear. The defense and interior ministries said that these forces will eventually be combined with the local police, NDS local forces, and the local army forces.

“A situation that will later create bad consequences will not be allowed. They will first support us and then they will be included in the police, army or the local NDS forces,” the acting minister of interior Gen. Abdul Sattar Mirzakwal said.

Atta Mohammad Noor, who leads a public mobilization movement in Balkh and has gone to Balkh districts to fight the Taliban, criticized some government officials for not cooperating with them in their campaign against the group.

“We hear some words from some sides asking why have they gone to the war? They should stay in the city and hand over the war to us. My brother, you are losing the war,” Noor said.

Meanwhile, the office of Ahmad Massoud, a public figure and son of the national hero Ahmad Shah Massoud, said that former mujahideen leaders are making efforts to reorganize a new front against the Taliban by consulting political leaders from the former resistance front.

“We hope that this front is announced and the public uprising forces become organized,” said Saleh Mohammad Registani, a member of Ahmad Massoud’s political office.

There are questions about the achievements of the public uprising forces, but representatives of these forces said they have succeeded in preventing the fall of their towns to the Taliban.

“They have proved effective in defending the security belts on the outskirts of Kunduz city,” said Rabbani Rabbani, a member of the Kunduz provincial council.

“So far, we have not seen proper support by the government for the people,” said Abdul Basir Osmani, an MP from Badghis.

Afghanis LOOT Bagram airbase HOURS after US troops pull out and leave the site 'without telling local officials' - as experts fear America's withdrawal could plunge the country into new crisis

Since 2001, Bagram airbase has served as a linchpin for the US war in Afghanistan

At its peak in 2012, Bagram saw more than 100,000 U.S. troops and NATO service members pass through its sprawling compound

This week, however, the final group of US soldiers left the base as the 20-year-long war in Afghanistan comes to an end

The solders allegedly left without telling local officials, meaning its gates were left unsecured

On Friday morning, locals moved in under the cover of darkness and looted several buildings

The US-backed Afghan National Security and Defence Forces have since gained control of the base, but it remains a shell of its former self

Photos taken on Friday show the base eerily quiet and almost abandoned

There are now fears it will be taken over by the Taliban who are gaining increasing control across Afghanistan

Nope. No parades but like us Vietnam vets will get a few neat looking ribbons and very decent health care through Veteran's hospital network.

Hopefully, unlike us Vietnam vets, they will not be scorned or spat upon for losing a war that should never have started in the first place.

Perhaps the 2,312 who didn't make it back will be memorialised. A short extension to the existing black wall with it's 58,320 names would be just the ticket.
