Xi, Putin show united stance on Afghanistan

By Mo Jingxi | China Daily | Updated: 2021-08-26 06:39

"China, Russia to actively participate in multilateral mechanisms related to issue

China and Russia agreed to strengthen communication and coordination on the Afghan issue as President Xi Jinping and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin exchanged in-depth views on the situation in the war-torn country in a phone conversation on Wednesday.

Xi said that China encourages all factions in Afghanistan to establish a broad-based, inclusive political framework through consultation, adopt moderate and prudent domestic and foreign policies, renounce relations with all kinds of terrorist groups and get along with the rest of the world, especially neighboring countries.

He noted that China respects Afghanistan's sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity, adheres to noninterference in the country's internal affairs and plays a constructive role in promoting the political settlement of the Afghan issue.

During their conversation, Putin said that the evolution of the situation in Afghanistan reveals that external forces' policy of imposing their own political model does not work and will only bring destruction and catastrophe to related countries.

Noting that China and Russia share a similar position and common interests with regard to the Afghan issue, Putin said his country stands ready to have closer contact and coordination with China to actively participate in multilateral mechanisms related to the Afghan issue and to crack down on terrorism and drug trafficking.

His country will also work with China to prevent the spillover of security risks from Afghanistan, resist interference and destruction by external forces and safeguard regional safety and stability, Putin said.

Referring to China-Russia relations, Xi said the two countries' strategic coordination and practical cooperation in all aspects have made a series of achievements, which provided significant support for their development as well as the international community's joint efforts to overcome current difficulties.

He called on the two countries to innovate their modes of cooperation and expand cooperation to more areas in order to achieve new outcomes.

China is willing to work with Russia to deepen cooperation on COVID-19 vaccine development and production, guarantee the security and stability of global supply chains for vaccines and safeguard the safety and health of people in both countries, thus contributing to the building of a global community of health for all, Xi said.

Stressing that only the wearer of the shoes knows if they fit or not, Xi said that only the Chinese and Russian peoples could say which system works in their own countries, calling on the two countries to deepen cooperation in opposing external interference and take their destiny into their own hands.

Xi said that China firmly supports Russia following a development path that is consistent with its national conditions and resolutely supports the measures Russia has adopted to safeguard its national sovereignty and security.

Putin said his country pursues the one-China policy, supports China's legitimate position to safeguard its own core interests on issues related to Taiwan, Hong Kong, Xinjiang and the South China Sea, and opposes any external interference in China's domestic affairs.

Russia also objects to politicizing COVID-19 origin tracing and hopes to continue to deepen practical cooperation with China in all areas, including fighting against the virus, he said.
Both leaders said that it was important and necessary for China and Russia to maintain communication on major bilateral and multilateral issues in a timely manner given the current complex evolution of the international and regional situations. They agreed to maintain close contact through various means.

During their last meeting held via video link in June, the two leaders issued a joint statement that officially decided to extend the China-Russia Treaty of Good-Neighborliness and Friendly Cooperation, which was signed two decades ago."

Telephone conversation with President of China Xi Jinping

Vladimir Putin had a telephone conversation with President of the People’s Republic of China Xi Jinping.

    August 25, 2021 14:45

"In the context of the 20th anniversary of the Treaty of Good-Neighbourliness and Friendly Cooperation, the presidents noted with satisfaction that the Russian-Chinese strategic partnership has been developing progressively and dynamically. The main thing is that both sides are interested in further strengthening cooperation on the entire complex of issues on the bilateral and international agenda.

The leaders had an in-depth discussion on the Afghanistan problem. They expressed readiness to step up efforts to counter the threats of terrorism and drug trafficking emanating from Afghanistan and emphasised the importance of achieving peace as soon as possible and preventing the spread of instability to neighbouring regions. It order to do this, the presidents intend to use the potential of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation as much as possible, among other things. The two leaders also agreed to step up bilateral contacts and close cooperation, above all between the foreign ministries.

On the occasion of the upcoming 76th anniversary of the end of World War II, the relevance of the work to preserve the truth about the events of that period and prevent attempts to falsify history was noted.

The conversation was held in a traditionally friendly and trust-based atmosphere."

I admit to being poorly informed about some things, maybe someone here can tell me:

Is August 31st a date that was agreed with the Taliban in the Doha talks or is it simply some arbitrary date mandated by Biden?

The governments of the United States, Great Britain and Australia have warned their citizens against traveling to Kabul's airport amid the threat of a terrorist attack, as the evacuation deadline from Afghanistan approaches.

Australia's Department of Foreign Affairs on Thursday updated its advice on Smartraveller, warning people not to head to Hamid Karzai airport and telling those nearby to "move to a safe location and await further advice."

The US Embassy in Kabul in an updated advisory cited "security threats outside the gates" of the airport, advising citizens to "avoid traveling to the airport and to avoid airport gates at this time unless you receive individual instructions from a US government representative to do so."

The advisory went on to say that citizens already at the airport's gates "should leave immediately."

Britain's Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) gave similar advice on Wednesday night.

The victorious Biden government, announced a date of the 11th September 2021, initially. In memory of some defeat by another ME based entity, I believe.

Later after a meeting, of government groups in Doha, it was agreed by all the attendees, to be the 31st August 2021.

ameristan along with it's vassals, have had 18 months to devise a retreat schedule.

Which it and other groups, the previous Afghan government, NATO, various Europeans countries and possibly Australia reportedly, have failed to deliver, as can be observed today by the chaos at the airport. Some Europeans demanded an extension last week which The Taliban refused and subsequently so did ameristan.

The victorious Taliban, have and continue to follow the last Doha agreement. The previous Afghan government leaders ran away, allegedly to a ME country.

The Trump/Taliban Doha agreement and the Biden/Taliban Doha agreement are both available on the web.

WATCH Russian military planes evacuate hundreds from Afghanistan

    25 Aug, 2021 21:11 / Updated 1 hour ago

"Russia's Defense Ministry has launched its operation to evacuate over 500 people from Afghanistan in the wake of the Taliban takeover. Footage shows dozens of men, women and children disembarking from planes at safe destinations.

The Russian Defense Ministry's military transport Il-76 planes arrived at the Kabul airport on Wednesday to take citizens of Russia and other former Soviet republics home.

Videos obtained by RT show people, many of them families with children, getting on board the giant Russian transport aircraft that were turned into double-deck passenger planes to accommodate as many people as possible.

The planes were laden with food and drinking water so that the evacuees could have a snack on board. The Defense Ministry has said that medical teams would also be on board, to provide any help the evacuees may need.

It is unclear how many people were evacuated on Wednesday, but the Russian Defense Ministry had earlier said it was planning to evacuate over 500 people from Afghanistan. The list includes Russian citizens as well as those of Belarus, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and Ukraine."

Internal UN document discloses Taliban’s attitude towards staff

The Taliban stopped an Afghan United Nations staff member as he tried to reach Kabul airport on Sunday. They searched his vehicle and found his U.N. identification. Then they beat him.

On Monday, three unknown men visited the home of another U.N. staff member who was at work at the time. They asked his son where his father was, and accused him of lying: “We know his location and what he does.”

The incidents are among dozens contained in an internal U.N. security document seen by Reuters that describes veiled threats, the looting of U.N. offices and physical abuse of staff since Aug. 10, shortly before the Taliban swept to power.

While the Islamist militant movement has sought to reassure Afghans and Western powers that they will respect people’s rights, reports of reprisals have undermined confidence, not least among those associated with foreign organisations.

The Taliban did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the U.N. incident list.

The group has said it would investigate reported abuses, and has also encouraged aid organisations to continue their work. It said this week that aid was welcome, as long as it was not used as a means of political influence over Afghanistan.

The United Nations said it did not comment on leaked security documents.

U.N. spokesman Stephane Dujarric added: “The authorities that are in charge in Kabul are responsible for the safety and security of U.N. staff and premises. We remain in touch with them in that regard.”

The United Nations has relocated about a third of the 300 foreign staff it had in Afghanistan to Kazakhstan. It has also stressed that it wanted to maintain a presence to help the Afghan people.

There are around 3,000 Afghan U.N. staff still in the country. A U.N. spokesman has said the world body was in contact with other countries to urge them to provide visas or support temporary relocation of some of them.

Thousands of people have fled Afghanistan since the Taliban entered Kabul on Aug. 15, boarding military and commercial flights from the capital where the airport has been the scene of deadly chaos.

Some fear a return to the Taliban’s brutal enforcement of strict Islamic law last time they ruled, when they banned women from work and girls from school.

Others, including those who work in advocacy and human rights, believe they could be the target of reprisals after scores of people were killed in suspected targeted Taliban attacks in the last year.

    ‘WE ARE IN DANGER’

An Afghan woman, who has worked for the United Nations for several years, told Reuters she felt abandoned.

“Every woman I know has the same fear as I do. What will now happen to our children if we are punished for our work? What will happen to our families? What will they do to us as women?” she said, speaking on condition of anonymity.

In a video message to staff in Afghanistan on Tuesday, U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said he was distressed by reports that some had experienced harassment and intimidation.

“We are doing everything in our power, namely through the permanent engagement with all relevant actors, and will continue to do so to ensure your safety and well-being, and to find external solutions where they are needed,” Guterres said.

An Aug. 21 U.N. risk assessment, reported by Reuters on Tuesday, said there was “no coherent command and control” within the Taliban.

The speed of their military victory, which coincided with U.S.-led foreign troops withdrawing after 20 years of war, has left a power vacuum, and the group is scrambling to form a government in Kabul and the provinces to run the country.

An Afghan U.N. worker, speaking on condition of anonymity, told Reuters he knew of at least 50 Afghan staff warned or threatened by the Taliban, adding: “U.N. national staff who are under serious direct threat of the Taliban must be evacuated.”

He said the threats were not all necessarily linked to people’s status at the United Nations, but were a function of the Taliban’s push to impose control over Kabul.

A second Afghan woman who works at the United Nations has been moving houses with her husband and 3-year-old daughter in the past 10 days. Some of her neighbors knew she worked at the United Nations, and she worried they might inform on her.

She has a visa for a neighboring country, but is frustrated that the United Nations has not helped her evacuate.

“We were expecting the entire U.N. system to help us. We were honestly expecting that,” the woman said. “We are in danger. And if we cannot work, who is going to reach the people?”

Trump should never have even legitimized the Taliban by meeting with them in the first place.
But as he did, he should have said somrthing along the lines of "we will withdraw but the current Govt is the Govt. and if you twitch before we are completely out and done we will swoop back. you will give us as much time as we need. The minute we get the feeling you are moving before we are completely done we will swoop back and take it all back."
But he, (or at least Pompeo on Trumps behalf) did and he made the deal he did. Biden is under no obligation to abide by a deal Trump made and as it stands, in my opinion Biden needs sto stop being a pussy and make it clear if there is any attack on current operations the U.S. will return in FORCE and lets start again (another 20 years?).
In my opinion the U.S. should have just stayed there, consider it a vassal state,( albiet an expensive one). A good training ground for U.S. troops.
Edit. They are fools for imagining the Taliban will abide by any agreement they made)

    suicide bombers attack kabul airport.

    many killed.

Two explosions have taken place outside Kabul airport amid the evacuations of thousands of people from Western nations, with Taliban officials claiming at least 13 people have been killed, including children.

UK defence sources said one of the blasts took place by a hotel where British troops and journalists have been staying, followed by small arms fire, while the second one was by Abbey Gate.

The Pentagon press secretary said the attack resulted in "a number of US and civilian casualties" but the exact figure remains unclear.

    Yep. Here it comes.
    Complicating things ten fold.

My understanding that there are still a couple thousand Americans unaccounted for or cannot access the airport area.
Yesterday, those ['Mericans] that gathered at one of these airport gates were instructed to remove themselves from the area, as they were sitting targets.
Why didn't the troops allow them to pass quickly onto the "secured" airport facility? Wasn't that the plan - assemble as many Americans as possible and process?
