Tired of being ignored, volunteers at Phuket Dog Shelter lodge complaint with Governo

PHUKET: Volunteers at the Phuket Stray Dog Shelter have filed an official complain to Phuket Governor Narong Woonciew after claiming their requests for help from the Phuket Provincial Livestock Office (PPLO) have been constantly ignored.

The formal complaint, received in person by Phuket Vice Governor Vikrom Jakthee yesterday (July 2), claimed that the PPLO had informed the volunteers that any requests or complaints were being handled by the Phuket Provincial Administrative Organisation (PPAO or OrBorJor).

After hearing nothing from the PPAO for six months, the volunteers approached the organisation again for an update only to be told it was not their responsibility and it would be handled by the PPLO after all.

The volunteers returned to the PPLO for clarification and answers only to be told nothing had been done due to the COVID-19 pandemic situation. Having lodged an official complaint with the PPLO two months ago, the volunteers still have yet to hear back from them in reply.

“If they [PPLO] claim the lack of action is due to the pandemic then it is clear the dogs have been suffering for a long time,” the formal complaint stated.

“The livestock officers must know full well that there are only six staff at the shelter who are responsible for taking care of almost 1,000 dogs and who operate on an insufficient budget,” it added.

“You must know that the dogs in the shelter do not have freedom and have to fight for food in order to survive. We volunteers have helped by working in the shelter for the last five years when there were only originally around 300 dogs. Today there are around 1,000 dogs and urgent help is needed.

“We regularly clean all areas for the dogs, shower and clean them and separate any sick dogs from the others. We have also managed to successfully find people who are willing to adopt a dog. As the shelter did not have sufficient budget, we have found ways of generating some funds to help.

“We have never posted any images or information that may damage the image or reputation of the PPLO. We have always respected the organisation and they are fully aware of how much we care for the dogs.

“Ultimately, the PPLO has ignored our complaint. They may think that the dogs are not important. We really hope that the Phuket Governor will not ignore us like the other offices have done and instead do something to help the situation,” the letter concluded.

V/Gov Vikrom informed the volunteers who lodged the complaint that he will investigate the case further by questioning the relevant officers and will then will inform the group of the outcome in due course.

I couldn't agree more. It's such a waste of effort and resources. They only end on the street attacking people. Just euthanise them.

Soi dogs rarely attack people from all of my visits to Phuket. They are in very poor condition due to malnourishment and disease. Some are hurt by being run over as well. Euthanise them is a definitely bad idea. How would you like to be euthanised?

The government should be doing something about the situation. The volunteers are godsends to take care of them out of their own free will. I spent some time at the Soi Dog foundation in Phuket and these people are doing great work in helping the dogs in whatever way they can.

You really are a stupid woman. Soi dog attacks, particularly attacks on children, are a major problem in Thailand.

Phuket had a big sweep of stray dogs a couple of years ago specifically after an attack on a child.

MM Soi dogs in Thailand are a ferking hindrance, since the law was changed regarding them the villages are full of the unwanted beasts, they are basically vermin and a danger to locals.

They should do the decent thing and put them all down, life shouldn't be kept in cages, they should be kept by loving families who want to feed them and care for them.

When you have many people in poverty around the globe and someones focus is on wild dogs, there is something certainly wrong with peoples focus of life.

The army should field teams of soi dog assassins to every village and town and eliminate them....the stray dogs that is, not the villagers or townies!

Are these the same people who complained about the US not accepting enough strays? Or was that the Pattaya lot.

being a dog LOVER i have visited quite a few of these shelters and those who have to take care of the strays only live the same life as the dogs,THEY ONLY EXIST and have no life at all with only the help of goodwill people.this is supposed to be a buddist country but would rather see millions of dogs suffer.to put those unfortunate to find themselves with no life only suffering, should be put to sleep,i would dearly love to subscribe as long as i could hold them when its done.HH LOVE ME LOVE MY DOG.

^ Pity many others don't see it the same way, rather than trying to save animals that will always live a life of misery.

I must have hit a nerve, as I was called stupid with some oncoming reds. I've been to Thailand many many times (probably about 20), and I've been to many places big and small. I have never been afraid of a soi dog when walking around. That is why I said they don't attack. I'm sure some may if you get near them or do something to them, but my experience I have never seen one attack. And yes, they are a nuisance, but I don't think euthanising them is the answer, but for those that live there perhaps they see it differently. Excuse me for having a different opinion. Geez.

So you'd rather then just leave them on the street, injured, with rabies etc?
These people are doing something like sterilising them, giving them shots, and feeding them.
So, now these dogs are not in misery they are clean, and more healthy.
The govt should give more money to shelters and make more of them to help the dogs.

i would NEVER EVER breed a dog in thailand, with all the dangers it poses,it takes a very special person to own a huskie here [one who is well educated as yourself.
and if you want to know i rescued him from being dumped by a so called owner.

Visited a former member many times who had a dog shelter in Hua Hin. She tried for years to make life better for strays bur finally had to give it up.

Fine caring lady. She is missed.

Anyone fancy a piss-up in Hua Hin?

So here is my heartburn with feeding Stray/Soi Dogs. It's sad to see them suffering. I too am a dog lover and have enjoyed their company all my life. BUT, feeding strays only prolongs their existence and allows them to breed and have puppies and the viscous cycle continues.

We had a lady near us that went around feeding all the strays. Big mounds of rice. The dogs that were eating it were already sickly and parasite infested. Then you hear the yelps and barking and sure enough a sick dog impregnated another sick dog and in no time you hear puppies yelping in some shrub area At a mooban meeting it was mandated there will be no feeding stray dogs. The reality is, while one wants to help, it only ultimately makes it worse for a new litter of strays.
