Google Removes Maps Targeting Hundreds Of Thais Accused Of Opposing The King

Google has taken down two Google Maps documents on Monday that had listed the names and addresses of hundreds of activists who were accused by royalists of opposing the monarchy, the technology company said.

Royalist activist Songklod “Capt Poo Kem” Chuenchoopol told Reuters he and a team of 80 volunteers had created the maps and planned to report everyone named on them to police on accusations of insulting the monarchy.

A spokesperson for Google said by email “the issue is now fixed”, and noted: “We have clear policies about what’s acceptable for user-generated My Maps content. We remove user-generated maps that violate our policies.”

A version of one of the maps seen by Reuters included the names and addresses of nearly 500 people, many of them students, together with their photos in university or high school uniforms. It had received over 350,000 views.

The faces of those named had been covered by black squares with the number 112, in reference to the article under the country’s criminal code which makes insulting or defaming the monarchy punishable by up to 15 years in prison.

Neither map could be accessed when Reuters tried to open them late on Monday.

Capt Songklod said that he and the team of volunteers sought to highlight those they accused of breaking that law.

“When each of us sees something offensive posted on social media, we put it on the map,” he said. Describing it as a “psychological” warfare operation, Capt Songklod said the aim was to dissuade people from online criticism of the monarchy.

Youth-led protests that began last year brought unprecedented criticism of the monarchy and calls for its reform both on the streets and online.

The government did not immediately respond to comment on the removal of the Google Maps or the content they contained.

Capt Songklod, 54, a retired army officer and prominent right-wing activist, said he considered the operation targeting opponents of the monarchy a “massive success” despite the removal of the maps.

The royalist activist said the content in them had come from public research.

Human rights groups and critics of the establishment said the maps included the private data and addresses of hundreds of people and could put them at risk of violence.

“I started to get panicked messages from young people in Thailand who had been doxxed in a royalist document on Google Maps accusing them of being anti-monarchy,” said Andrew MacGregor Marshall, a Scotland-based critic of the monarchy and one of the earliest to highlight the existence of the maps.

“It’s clear that young Thai people who just want democracy are facing worsening risks,” he said.

The depressing thing about these nazi thugs is the dismal fact that they are utterly oblivious to any notion what true democracy, justice, freedom and decency actually might entail.

But really, did the authorities, normally so rigorous in protecting the rights of establishment figures and their shills from alleged computer crime, not think it wrong private citizens of their country should be publicly labelled as criminals without any due process or evidence other than hearsay by a self appointed guardian of public morals?

Truly, this is a ghastly society.

^ Indeed, the article should display the home address and picture of Captain Songklod, see if he likes it.

Is it ever possible for you to do stay on topic rather than obfusgate on any post that criticises anti democratic governments and facilitators of corruption and totaltarianism? Your comment is totally irelevant to the subject at hand. you appear to be totally blind to the wishes and sufferings of people in these corrupt totalitarian states, as if you are searching for the next re incarnation of your god Stalin who built your ideal communist utopia.
Your blindness to other peoples suffering and lack of freedom is unfathomable and at times borders on a callousness that would be considered an attribute in a guard at a concentration camp or Russian Gulag. From recent previous comments you have made, It is hard to see any merit in you or your thinking. I sincerely hope that your real life persona is far superior to your comments on TD as I find it hard to think it is possible for you to be anything more than a thoroughly distasteful human being.

(How it is seen in other than 3rd world country):

Facebook asks: Are your friends becoming extremists?
    July 2, 2021

Facebook Inc (FB.O) is starting to warn some users they might have seen "extremist content" on the social media site, the company said on Thursday.

Screenshots shared on Twitter showed a notice asking "Are you concerned that someone you know is becoming an extremist?" and another that alerted users "you may have been exposed to harmful extremist content recently." Both included links to "get support."

The world's largest social media network has long been under pressure from lawmakers and civil rights groups to combat extremism on its platforms, including U.S. domestic movements involved in the Jan. 6 Capitol riot when groups supporting former President Donald Trump tried to stop the U.S. Congress from certifying Joe Biden's victory in the November election.

Facebook said the small test, which is only on its main platform, was running in the United States as a pilot for a global approach to prevent radicalization on the site.

"This test is part of our larger work to assess ways to provide resources and support to people on Facebook who may have engaged with or were exposed to extremist content, or may know someone who is at risk," said a Facebook spokesperson in an emailed statement. "We are partnering with NGOs and academic experts in this space and hope to have more to share in the future."

It said the efforts were part of its commitment to the Christchurch Call to Action, a campaign involving major tech platforms to counter violent extremist content online that was launched following a 2019 attack in New Zealand that was live-streamed on Facebook.

Facebook said in the test it was identifying both users who may have been exposed to rule-breaking extremist content and users who had previously been the subject of Facebook's enforcement.

The company, which has tightened its rules against violent and hate groups in recent years, said it does remove some content and accounts that violate its rules pro-actively before the material is seen by users, but that other content may be viewed before it is enforced against.
