Top of Mt. Fuji to be outfitted with 5G capabilities this summer

As the saying goes, a wise person climbs Mount Fuji once, but only a fool climbs it twice--that is, unless, they are in search of a lightning-fast, next-generation mobile connection.

Mobile giant KDDI Corp. announced on June 24 that 5G wireless service will become available on part of the summit of Mount Fuji from early July to late August.

The 5G technology boasts faster connections and higher data capacity, making it easier to stream live video of the magnificent views from the summit.

KDDI sets up a mobile base station on the top of the mountain during the climbing season every year, but this year is the first time it will provide 5G services for some areas of the summit.

“You can send high-resolution videos easily,” a company official said. “Please enjoy it by sharing them with people who can’t come and climb.”

Last year, Mount Fuji was closed even during the summer due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

But this year, people will be allowed to climb the mountain for the first time in two years.

Climbers can enter the Yamanashi route from July 1 and the Shizuoka route from July 10.

The wife and I climbed Mt Fuji in 2018 - about 8-9 hours up and down.

We didn’t hang around at the summit, I don’t think having 5G would have changed that.

(Coming down was worse than the ascent, my knees were agony for about a week)

You're OK lads, it's safe to use, none of that chinky spying shit.

KDDI picks Nokia and Ericsson as 5G equipment providers, excluding China's Huawei
