    Not to mention, much cheaper.

Pretty sure the government envisage actual tourists visiting, rather than just people returning to the country to work or because they happen to live there though.

A quick look at FB groups suggests tourists do intend to visit using this gateway, but actual numbers are obviously impossible to gauge from FB.

I’m sure Phuket has a number of devotees willing to be thrown in the deep end, but I doubt hotel entertainment will satisfy the visitors lust for all the venues that will remain closed, and the numbers arriving will fall well short of TAT expectations.
There will be Thai using it as back door to gain re-entry, but again, probably not as many as they think.

Far, far short. The whole thing is going to be another dismal flop. No one who has the slightest inkling about Thailand is going to go through all this BS to get to a beach resort island in the middle of monsoon season.

Christ, even the not so educated Thais know the time to go is December to Mar. So the estimates for domestic numbers is a fucking pipe dream.

And what foreigners would go through all the BS to go to a fucking island they can't leave. Ain't going to happen TAT. Dream on!

There are lots of absent farang residents anxious to return. I think that will be the bulk of the uptake tbh.

In essence, as others point out, this is really just an alternative to the 'Alternative' quarantine in Bangkok. Sure, the core tourist towns of Patong, Karon, Kata etc will remain dead, and for the forseeable future. However, the freedom to get out, visit beaches (if it's not raining), restaurants that are in essence bars that serve food, even diving trips. Not a typical holiday for sure, but better than spending two weeks in a box room with (if you're lucky) a small balcony in Bangkok. The majority of arrivals (latest figures are approximately 1,300 booked for the first 15 days) will be those desperate to see family/friends who are here (many questions about what a Thai needs to have to go to Phuket from the provinces on social media).

Millions used to visit Phuket every year with no intention of travelling in mainland Thailand.

Surely even you can work out why that is?

72% of respondents in a recent NIDA poll were against relaxing lockdown measures.

The Thai government has generally prioritised the health of the populace ahead of commerce for the last 16 months.

Boris Johnson's government, on the other hand...
    You idiot.

The rising trend in new cases in the UK hasn't just happened in the past week, it's been an established pattern for over a month plus. Christ, HK has put the UK on the highly contagious, fuck-off list of countries only t'other day..

Also, who gives a flying fuck what the masses think. The only thing the people who run this country care about is fucking money and since they have been vaccinated they have changed the policy from safety first to , fuck it, you'll just have to live with it.

Look you precious sap, every civilised country in the developed world has immunised its population in accordance with the priorities determined by the health protocols and age. What has Thailand done? Yep, it gave 70,000 doses to a public company for its employees and families.

Christ, it's a fucking snake pit and money calls the shots every time.

You do, apparently. Every morning after your daily bp medication you drone on about the thoughts of 70 million people...
