Man electrocuted while repairing home jacuzzi

PHUKET: Police are investigating what had led to a man being electrocuted while repairing a home jacuzzi in Cherng Talay yesterday (June 19).

Capt Yannaphat Malai of the Cherng Talay Police was called to the home, in Soi Pasak 8/2, Moo 4, Cherng Talay, after the man’s body was found at about 6:50pm last night.

Police together with Kusoldharm rescue workers arrived to find the body of Surapol Samthong, 45, originally from Trang, beside the sunken tub in an area under the floor.

After rescue workers safely recovered Mr Surapol’s body, forensic doctors from Vachira Phuket Hospital were called to examine the body. They found marks on Mr Surapol’s right hand indicating that he had suffered an electric shock. Mr Surapol’s body was taken to Thalang Hospital for further examination.

Kunpiya Ragon, 38, originally from Surat Thani, who rents the home, told police that she asked the housing project manager to call a technician to repair the jacuzzi at about 11am.

The technician, Mr Surapol, arrived at about midday and started working on the repairs, she said.

At about 6pm, her husband walked in to see the technician and found him dead, so he shut off the power to the house and called police, Ms Kunpiya said.

    Maybe
Being thai married myself, I do not feel that I am in a position, where it would be appropriate for me to point fingers regarding ignorance

    The technician
    Was a bit shit.

I'm not sure which is a safer bet.

He was wearing an old pair of flip flops, or he was a motosai taxi lad that's expert at everything.

if you cannot lock out the feed ,you should physically disconnect the wires

it would not surprise me if he had turned of the main switch and then someone had turned it back on to charge their phone

The housing manager saw the opportunity for his family to make a few bucks so he called his cousin who had previously repaired an extension cord for him.

Wiring at my place is a mess, when ever I need to do anything (fix light bulbs inc) I pull both wires out of the meter out on the pole.

M'Sahib signed up a few weeks ago for a 75 hour course on electrical equipment maintenance at the vocational training centre in Phuket Town. At the time she asked me if I thought she should do it, and I said yes as though I have the basics of electrical safety, I'm not going to be around for ever.

Anyway, the course started last night, and runs Monday to Friday 17.00 to 20.00 each day for five weeks. Last night was just an introduction and overview of what the course will entail and they will start getting into it proper tonight. That's one thing about M'Sahib, if she decides to do something it will be 100%, and over the next few weeks I anticipate all kinds of test kit arriving from Lazada!

She sent me these photos whilst she was there.

RCD's should be installed on the mains of every home in Thailand.

This of course won't stop someone from getting fried if they get ahold of both sides, but would stop an overwhelming majority of these electrocutions.

    And education of course.

How many have grounds on your shower hot water heaters. Most of the places I lived in didn't until I installed them.

M'Sahib has completed the second week of her electrical course at the local vocational course in Phuket Town, another three to go. After learning the basics of electrical safety, the curriculum is centred around the repair of small domestic appliances, and the students are encouraged to bring from home their own items for repair. There is an abundance of rice cookers. This caused her a problem as we're in the 'won't work, ditch it and get another one' bracket. However, I remembered an iron that was lurking as a spare, but had a tendency to get too hot. This was duly taken in and put to rights.

She sent me these last night.

    Good as new!

    She's all attention.

Later this year, they're running a course on air con maintenance that she wants to do.
