18 staff test positive at Ayutthaya hospital

Eight ambulance drivers and 10 medical workers at Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya Hospital in Pratuchai subdistrict have tested positive for Covid-19, the hospital’s director said on Monday.

“No doctors have been reported infected. Only some drivers and nurses have tested positive,” said Dr Chokechai Leethochawalit.

“The hospital has screened all high-risk people who had close contact with the patients but has so far found no additional infections,” he added.

The infected staff have been sent to a separate facility for treatment, said the director.

The hospital will test all 1,700 staff via saliva samples and nasal swabs on Monday and Tuesday.

“The hospital has a contingency plan for this kind of situation and will prioritise the safety of all patients,” Chokechai said. “During the testing period it will continue to provide treatment to patients as usual.”

On Sunday, Ayutthaya reported 206 new Covid-19 cases, ranking third behind Bangkok (924 cases) and Samut Prakan (217 cases). Ayutthaya has logged a total of 1,841 cases during the latest wave of infections, which emerged around early April.
