Young British man falls to death from hotel in Pattaya

A young British man fell to his death from a hotel near Jomtien beach this afternoon (June 7th), Pattaya Police reported.

The Pattaya City Police was notified of the incident at a hotel near Jomtien beach around 1:00 P.M.

Police, emergency responders, and The Pattaya News responders arrived at the eight-story hotel to find the body of the British man, 20, on the ground near the hotel wearing only a pair of boxers. (The Pattaya News is withholding his name pending notification of his embassy and his family. The hotel name is withheld pending further investigation per standard editorial policy.)

Pattaya Police told reporters the man stayed on the fifth floor of the hotel. However, police are checking CCTV at the hotel to see which level the man fell down from and the exact cause of death. We will provide any further updates on this story as they come in.

If it was suicide, wish there was a way we could have talked him out of it.

If he fell from the balcony the height of the railing may be at cause.

I think I can count the places I stayed at with correct railing on one hand. All the rest had 80-90cm high railing, for me at hip height at best, easy to tip if you don't pay attention.

Sorry I laugh every time I hear that as root cause. In all my years here and reading about these unfortunate incidents they never seem to pan out as "It was due to a low railing height and that he accidently went over, Especially alone". Most seem to end up as suicide for whatever personal reason.

being realistic, do the math on the railing height. The individual would likely have to be 193 cm+ tall and the railing 106cm or less.

I'm 180 cm tall, I can't count the places where the railing was "unsafe" for my height, 90 cm is right on my hip bone .. way too low.

The most common railing height code is 106cm indeed, these 15 cm or so change everything regarding tiping risk. I put 120cm railings in the rooms we let to students, better safe than sorry as a death would ruin our business.

Of course you wouldn't suddenly fall without other risky circumstances such as being drunk, fooling around with someone else or simply not paying attention (your on the phone, and you step back or sideways toward the railing to rest on it...).
And there're, I agree, people with suicidal tendencies. Can't say in which proportion but I'm convinced some cases that have been ruled as suicide were accidents.
