Yes. Actually, Uyghur and Kazakh Muslims, along with other minority populations in China, were never subject to the national population control policies- be that 1,2, or 3 child. Thus, unsurprisingly, their population has been growing faster than that of the Han majority. Some genocide.

All the children that were given away or killed (esp. females) because of this one child policy, and now the government wants more children being born? It is something government should not be intervening with bottom line.

I remember when living in China, many people were telling me that if they had two children that were different sexes they had to pay the government so much money because of it and now they are encouraging it..... go figure.

I think it was Deng and his people who decided the population was out of control and institutionalized extreme measures to ensure their concerns were addressed.

Yes, thanks for the correction. Deng in 1979 started the one child policy to try to decrease the population.

That is a good point, Russ, and just to add to that, women are not given much of a social safety net to want to have more children. Women only get 160 days of maternity leave and no paternal leave either. Parents have to pay for childcare and women are often discriminated against for wanting to have a child by their employers.

Also, men often work long hours, and it falls on the woman to take care of the child, when many women have to work because of the cost of living.
