Can Benny get himself out of this one?

The far-right Israeli politician Naftali Bennett and opposition leader Yair Lapid have agreed to forge a coalition government that would oust Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu from his 12 straight years in power.

“It’s my intention to do my utmost in order to form a national unity government along with my friend Yair Lapid, so that, God willing, together we can save the country from a tailspin and return Israel to its course,” said Bennett, a former settler leader and religious nationalist, in a televised address.

While further political negotiations are expected, the move by Bennett served a massive blow to Israel’s longest-serving leader, who is famed for his political wizardry and has survived repeated attempts to end his career.

Minutes after the speech ended, a stern-looking Netanyahu went on air to rail against Bennett. “He’s committed the scam of the century,” Netanyahu said of his former ally and senior aide, accusing him of abandoning rightwing voters. He called the proposed coalition government “a danger to Israel’s security and future”.

    Bennett,
who wants to annex most of the occupied West Bank, is much closer ideologically to Netanyahu than Lapid, a former TV news anchor popular with the country’s secular middle class, who has been deep in negotiations to form a government before a Wednesday deadline.

According to local media reports on the deal, Bennett, the 49-year-old tech millionaire who previously headed the defence and education ministries, would become prime minister for the first two years of a term, with Lapid, 57, replacing him for the final two.

    Does his replacement look preferable?

The far-right Israeli politician Naftali Bennett will be the country’s next prime minister under a proposed power-sharing deal intended to oust Benjamin Netanyahu, the head of the opposition has confirmed.

Yair Lapid said in a speech on Monday that his efforts to forge a coalition of ideologically opposed parties could lead to a new government within days, and with it, Netanyahu’s removal from office after 12 years in power.

“We can end this next week,” Lapid said. “In a week the state of Israel can be in a new era with a different prime minister.”

In his speech and for the first time, Lapid referred to Bennett, a far-right religious nationalist and strong advocate for the settler movement in the Palestinian territories, as the “intended prime minister”.

One step at a time. Let's get this guy out of power and into jail and then have a closer look at the replacement. It would be difficult to see the possibility of some type of equitable settlement with the Palestinians being any less with the new guy.

    ^ I agree.

Being further right or not, this guy has to rely even more on cross-party support, hopefully that'll keep him away from extremes

Absolutely nothing changes until Israel decides to either withdraw from the illegal occupation of Palestine, and thus two state solution. Or combine the states, a one state solution. Am I the only one not exactly holding my breath? You can't put lipstick on a pig.

I find it strange that Israeli politicians described as 'moderate' seem to think enclosing occupied Palestine into isolated Bantustans for the natives (as is happening now) is some kind of way forward. Moderate Nazis? Nope, that changes nothing and the situation continues unchanged.

Just to be replaced with another of his kind.
And continued maintenance from the Anglo-American sector.

    The principles remain the same.

How the state of Palestine could exist when seeing the current map? Would it be a country of thousands islands surrounded by walls with their friends behind the wall? How to jump from one island onto the next one?

Palestine Islands, so easy to live in:

Can Benny get himself out of this one?-palestine-israel-jpg

    Israeli checkpoints
There are more than 700 road obstacles across the West Bank, including 140 checkpoints. These checkpoints severely limit Palestinian freedom of movement. While Palestinians may have to wait for hours at these checkpoints and travel along segregated road networks, Israelis can travel freely on their own “bypass roads” which have been built on Palestinian land to connect illegal Israeli settlements to major metropolitan areas inside Israel.

About 70,000 Palestinians with Israeli work permits cross through Israeli military checkpoints on their way to their workplaces every day. They work beyond the Green Line inside Israel due to the high unemployment rate in the Palestinian territories – a byproduct of the 54-year Israeli occupation.

    Yeah fuck you Benny!

A new governing coalition has been formed and is prepared to replace Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, opposition leader Yair Lapid officially informed President Reuven Rivlin and Knesset Speaker Yariv Levin late Wednesday night.

    Relegated to the opposition bench.

Benjamin Netanyahu has lost his 12-year hold on power in Israel after its parliament voted in a new coalition government.

Right-wing nationalist Naftali Bennett has been sworn in as prime minister, leading a "government of change".

He will lead an unprecedented coalition of parties which was approved with a razor-thin majority of 60-59.

Mr Bennett will be prime minister until September 2023 as part of a power-sharing deal.

He will then hand power over to Yair Lapid, leader of the centrist Yesh Atid, for a further two years.

Mr Netanyahu - Israel's longest-serving leader who has dominated its political landscape for years - will remain head of the right-wing Likud party and become leader of the opposition.

The major question is how long the coalition will be able to govern, it is a motley coalition and Benny will take any change he can get to break it.

^So, should the world worry about that?

However, when it is true what some claim what everything in the world the small state is in charge of?

Do you worry about it, Klondyke?

Do you worry about the majority of one?
