A closer look at Sinopharm, Thailands first alternative vaccine

A vaccine developed by China’s Sinopharm looks set to become the first alternative jab available to Thais, as Chulabhorn Royal Academy prepares to import 1 million doses next month.

On Friday (May 28), the Sinopharm shot became the fifth vaccine approved by Thailand’s Food and Drug Administration (FDA) after the AstraZeneca, Sinovac, Moderna and Johnson & Johnson brands.

    How effective is it?

The Sinopharm jab is an inactivated COVID-19 vaccine developed by Sinopharm/China National Pharmaceutical Group and approved by the World Health Organization (WHO) for people aged 18 and above. The shot requires two doses at a recommended interval of three to four weeks.

According to WHO, the Sinopharm vaccine is 79 per cent effective against symptomatic COVID-19 infection and hospitalisation from 14 days after the second dose. It is also the first Asian COVID-19 vaccine to be approved by the WHO for emergency use.

However, there is no clear evidence yet of the vaccine’s efficacy against mutants of the virus, including the UK variant that is responsible for most of Greater Bangkok’s infections in the ongoing third wave.

    Which countries have used it?

The United Arab Emirates (UAE), Peru, Morocco, Bahrain, Egypt, China and Hungary have adopted this vaccine. Ruler of the UAE’s Dubai, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al-Maktoum, took the jab himself in November last year.

The UAE also recently approved booster shots of the Sinopharm vaccine six months after residents get their second dose.

    Who will get it?

Set to be imported by Biogenetech Co, the Sinopharm vaccine will not be free in Thailand. However, Chulabhorn Royal Academy (CRA) – which is procuring this alternative – has said it will not profit from the rollout.

“We believe this vaccine should cost no more than Bt1,000 per dose,” CRA secretary-general Prof Nithi Mahanonda told the press on Friday. “It will be offered along with insurance to cover side-effects.”

Nithi said 1 million doses should be imported before the end of June for distribution to interested agencies and people. The Federation of Thai Industries (FTI), for example, has already expressed interest in taking 300,000 doses, while oil and gas conglomerate PTT has placed an order for an undisclosed amount.

Wednesday (May 26)’s announcement in the Royal Gazette that the CRA was importing vaccine was greeted with widespread surprise. It appeared to contradict repeated insistence by Thai authorities that vaccine manufacturers were only dealing with governments.

Nithi, however, said CRA was importing the Sinopharm jabs in partnership with the FDA and Public Health Ministry.

Two COVID-19 vaccines from China's Sinopharm showed more than 70% efficacy against symptomatic cases, but it remains unclear how much protection they provide against severe or asymptomatic cases, according to the first detailed result of a large late-stage study published to the public.

A vaccine developed by a Wuhan-based subsidiary of Sinopharm was 72.8% effective against symptomatic COVID-19 at least two weeks after second injection, based on interim results, the peer-reviewed study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association showed on Wednesday.

This is slightly better than the 72.5% rate announced in a company statement in February.

Another vaccine developed by a Beijing-based institute linked to Sinopharm, which this month obtained emergency use approval by the World Health Organization (WHO), showed a 78.1% efficacy, the paper said.

The readings were based on calculations over 142 symptomatic cases in a trial involving more than 40,000 participants, with 26 injected with the Wuhan unit's vaccine and 21 with the Beijing unit's shot, it said.

"There were only 2 severe cases of COVID-19 among participants, so conclusions about prevention of severe cases cannot be made," the paper said.

"The study could not address the question of whether the... vaccines prevent against asymptomatic infection, which requires formal study-wide surveillance via virologic and serologic tests," it said.

The trial, conducted in countries including the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain, did not recruit pregnant women and people under 18, while data was insufficient for the elderly and those with chronic diseases, researchers said.

Data from other trial sties in Egypt and Jordan will be included in the final analysis, researchers said.

Sinopharm BBIBP-CorV, also known as the Sinopharm COVID-19 vaccine,[8] is one of two inactivated virus COVID-19 vaccines developed by Sinopharm. It completed Phase III trials in Argentina, Bahrain, Egypt, Morocco, Pakistan, Peru, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) with over 60,000 participants.[9] BBIBP-CorV shares similar technology with CoronaVac and BBV152, other inactivated virus vaccines for COVID-19.[10]

Peer-reviewed results published in JAMA of Phase III trials in United Arab Emirates and Bahrain showed BBIBP-CorV 78.1% effective against symptomatic cases and 100% against severe cases (21 cases in vaccinated group vs. 95 cases in placebo group).[11] In December 2020, the UAE previously announced interim results showing 86% efficacy.[12] While mRNA vaccines like the Pfizer–BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine and mRNA-1273 showed higher efficacy of over 90%, those present distribution challenges for some nations as they require deep-freeze facilities and trucks. BIBP-CorV could be transported and stored at normal refrigerated temperatures.[13]
i would find it hard to trust any results obtained by a state funded chinese company, desperate for some vaccination success, organising and funding the testing of their vaccine, produced in wuhan of all places, in countries such as argentina, bahrain, morocco, egypt, pakistan and peru.

fxck them and fxck their rancid bat juice.

Absolutely fucking stupid. Just sheer annoyingly fucking stupid. It is exactly the same type of vaccine (killed virus), made in exactly the same country (China) as the sinovac.

Go buy a million doses buy the fucking JJ or one of the mRNA vaccines.

    Fucking stupid fucking shit.

The question about the efficiency of the vaccine against the various strains is also aired for Western produced vaccines.

Yes but the ability of sinopharm to produce antibodies is fucking shite vs the Pfizers and Modernas of this world, I've seen the numbers.

Luckily, we have here an expert not only on all "chinkies" but also on antibodies. Others - not such experts - are asking unpleasant questions, not always possible to read in MSM. For instance, why the Moderna vaccine has one of the ingredients called SM-102 that is really not very "healthy". But perhaps it's only a bad mouthing, we believe our politicians, they surely would not advise anything bad to us, would they?

Another again are reporting that it is quite exceptional that the Moderna prior to Pandemic had not brought much things on the market, actually nothing. Suddenly - after the Wuhan story - they were the very first with their mRNA, getting also fast authorisation. Incidentally, their CEO in his job before Moderna was a CEO of a company close to Chinese big guys that cooperated in furnishing of the Wuhan laboratory.

But perhaps it's really a coincidence (or a bad mouthing) since we have not read it on MSM...

You just knew klondick would be the sort of gullible fucking moron to swallow stupid antivax shit on the internet.

He's as dumb as a fucking rock.

The safety fact sheet that social media users are sharing as alleged proof of the harmful nature of the lipid SM-102 in the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine, is actually describing the dangers of chloroform.

In fairness Klondyke is essentially correct in his post regarding Moderna. This company had never produced a vaccine of any type.

Their first attempt was hastily withdrawn as being an abject failure. Their share price which had risen exponentially also dropped rapidly at this stage.

The US pumped masses of $ and resources into this company to get a win. No other country was going to be able to supply a vaccine to the US. National pride was at stake here.

    1. Moderna has been working on mRNA vaccines since at least 2013, losing $1.3Bn in the process. Getting vaccines developed and approved costs a fortune and normally takes years because of lack of funding and regulation. I assume the failure you are talking about was the one for the genetic disorder in 2017, three years before anyone had even heard of SARS-COV2

    2. Pfizer brought an mRNA SARS-COV2 vaccine to market before they did.

Apart from that, you and klondick are absolutely correct

in the spelling of the word "moderna"

You are both aware that the Pfizer vaccine is a joint effort with BioNtech. Strange that a small German company would be chosen/required to JV with a much larger and experienced company.

No need to ponder who did the heavy lifting!

Yep, the US were going to go to any lengths to save face after their disastrous handling of the pandemic.

Not really sure what you are on about here, but I will entertain you. As you have mentioned, the small company that developed the vaccine apparently partnered with Pfizer for "testing and logistical" reasons. What does that matter? Just curious what vaccine would you prefer? I have had Moderna vaccine and am very happy with it.

Did you forget that there was an orange moron in the Oval Office at the time the pandemic started? It wasn't until January of this year that a reasonable adult took over. That said since then America now has given a jab to over 50% of its massive population. How is the vaccine rollout in OZ going?

Which makes you look even sillier for saying:

I wasn’t being critical of the US, merely stating the facts that the internal politics over there meant that the US had to be be first.

Honest Joe has done a great job so far, probably should do a bit more in sending the excess overseas to Africa etc.

Australia has performed very poorly on the vaccine rollout. However coupled with NZ it has to be stated that controlling the pandemic was world beating.

In Australia, I have no option but to get the Astra Zeneca vaccine.

It amazes me how many laypeople have became vaccine experts.

The annual flu vaccine is manufactured by a variety of different companies with differing results. Which one is your favourite?

The UK was the first to approve and use a vaccine.

I take whatever the company gets, it's a gamble anyway because they only prevent the three or four strains they *anticipate* being the most prevalant.

However it has always worked well for me.
