Thread: Thailand will officially enter rainy season this Saturday

The Thai Meteorological Department announced today, May 13th, that Thailand will officially end the summer season and enter the rainy season this Saturday, May 15th, with expectedly 5 to 10 percent more rainfall than the average and than last year.

The first half of the season, from mid-May to July, the total amount of rain will be 10 percent more than average while in the second half of the season, from September to October, the total amount of rain will be close to the average rate.


From the beginning of this rainy season, the Eastern and Southwestern parts of Thailand will be expected to have heavy rain in many areas and very heavy in some places as a southwest monsoon will become periodically strong and prevail over the Andaman Sea and Thailand. In addition, there may be a strong low-pressure area in the Andaman Sea which can develop to be a depression or cyclone and move to the west of Thailand.

Heavy to very heavy rain amounts may occur continuously for many days in most parts of Thailand during the season. Therefore, flash floods with overflow may take place, specifically during August until September. The public should closely follow the daily weather forecast news.


During the period of tropical cyclones moving near or past Thailand, gusty wind with heavy to very heavy rain will occur in many areas. Gusty wind will cause waves to appear in coastal areas while wave height may reach 3 – 4 meters during some periods. Therefore, the public and mariners should be cautious of natural hazards and attentively follow the news during tropical cyclone periods.

Upper Nan province hasn't been as hot or air polluted for the last 4-6 weeks. We've had a nice summer storm season that greened the place up, sent water down the rivers out of the mountains and cleared up the air. Only downside one nasty storm did cause a lot of power line damage and we and a lot of others centered on Pua had an 18 hour power outage. Nice electrical storm raging right now and some wind driven rain hitting the windows. Roll on the monsoon rains.

It was pissing it down most of last week in BKK.

The combination of high temperatures and high humidity has made Pattaya a sauna - once the sea breezes subside it's scarcely tolerable. The sea temperature is knocking on 32c which is as refreshing as warm lager.

Aircon on most afternoons now. Roll on the rain.

In my neck of the woods, it has been the coolest and wettest hot season I have known, which was nice.

The temperature now is approaching 34c with 62% humidity giving a 'feel' temperature of 43c using the heat index calculator.

Usually I would be languishing in the shade in my pool with a hat but because the local idiots think COVID virus can lurk within the confines of a swimming pool it is closed together with all the other condo pools.

At least this time around the dimwits haven't closed the beaches.

It's raining a little bit as I'm writing this post, but like any official season, the rain or snow doesn't suddenly fall because the season has started.
