Beijing vows to fight back after Australia cancels China’s Belt and Road project

The Chinese Foreign Ministry has slammed Australia’s decision to tear up the Belt and Road agreement signed between China and the state of Victoria, labelling Canberra’s move a “historic reversal” in bilateral relations.
Speaking on Thursday, Wang Wenbin, a Foreign Ministry spokesman, told gathered press that Beijing intends to “resolutely and forcefully fight back” against Canberra’s move to cancel China’s Belt and Road Initiative in Victoria, calling on Australia to immediately reverse its decision.

“China has lodged solemn representations with Australia and reserves the right to further respond,” he stated, adding that relations between the two countries are already facing difficulties and will continue to suffer because of this move.

Wang said that the original agreement with Victoria, which was agreed upon in a memorandum of understanding in 2018, was a positive move for the two countries’ relations. However, he claimed that Canberra’s decision to cancel the agreement on Wednesday has “seriously damaged the mutual trust between the two countries.” He added: “China is strongly dissatisfied and firmly opposed.”

The Belt and Road Initiative is a multi-trillion-dollar project that seeks to enhance global trade routes and sees China invest in regional and national infrastructure projects, from a port in Pakistan to hydroelectric projects in Uganda.

While the agreement had not been finalized with Victoria, the project would have seen greater Chinese involvement in the state’s infrastructure development, as well as unlocking new areas of cooperation around manufacturing, biotechnology, and agriculture.
On Wednesday, Foreign Minister Marise Payne used her powers to review and cancel the project in the state.

Relations between the two countries have deteriorated greatly over the last year, prompted by Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison’s call for an independent inquiry into the source of the Covid-19 pandemic and a decision to cut Chinese firms out of the country’s 5G projects.

China hit back with tariffs on wine and agricultural products.

It looks like the Chinese should learn what difference is between a contract and a MoU..

It's a power grab really, between the federal Liberal (conservative) government, and the Victorian Labor goverment. Part left/ right bullshit, part federal/ state powerplay. Apropos of nothing really, and Australian farmers & pastoralists are bracing to see how many billions this will cost them.

The BRI is really all about SE Asia, Sth Asia, Central Asia, Europe, and Africa. Contiguous. You cannot exactly build a rail line to Oz, goods will go by sea as always- and we sell more to China than we buy from them. So apropos of nothing really, although Kiwi farmers (among others) are probably gonna get a lucrative boost from the PRC at the expense of aussie farmers.

One would suspect that an Australian State, the Vitoria democratically elected Government, would not be able to sign a trade MOU with a foreign government.

Or is this a Commonwealth issue?

An MoU is not worth much, it just says that the parties during a discussion were on the same frequency.
Slightly stronger is a Letter of Intent but it is still far from a binding contract.

Well I've made my view clear- I think the Morrison government is shooting Australian primary producers and future generations in the back, by parroting right wing rhetoric spewing from an increasingly paranoid USA, and still fighting last centuries Cold war. And they describe themself as pro- business.

and they even allowed the 99 year lease of the darwin port
Sky news (Murdoch, obviously) is openly lobbying for that to be cancelled now. Sky news here makes Fox look 'fair and balanced' in comparison!

...possibly, but it's also true that Aussie exporters have been spurred to seek entry into other markets that may not have received much attention previously...a larger number of markets, more aggressive marketing (think what Crocodile Dundee did for shrimp and barbies), and more efficient production techniques offer a better future for Aussie producers, imo, than depending on what the Chinese choose to buy or not buy depending on political whims...

Didn't anyone tell you TC? We're not allowed to sell Ugg boots in the USA. But sure, there is nothing like losing your biggest customer to make you try and find new ones!

even though the smart move would be to build a new port elsewhere on the coast with all the modern mod cons, security for naval vessels and planning for expansion
