Deposit scams are spreading in Thailand but remember you will be safe as long as you don’t press the link! Police are warning people to beware of SMS notifying you of a money deposit along with an attached link to see the money. Police Colonel Siriwat Deepo from the Royal Thai Police Headquarters reported on 20 April 2020 to beware of deposit SMS scams. There have been many people who fell victim for the scam. Victims have filed police reports along with sharing to the media. Most of them received notification of 100,000-200,000 THB deposited into their account. The messages look like they are sent from the bank. There are also notifications of 50,000 THB withdrawal and even notifications to get the Covid-19 vaccine.


Victims who received withdrawal notification came with a link to enter if they did not withdraw the cash, most victims out of shock will press the link in hopes of protecting their money. By doing so, the hackers received all their information. Officials advise the people to stay calm when receiving notifications related to your account or Covid-19. Many of these messages attach links with strange URL’s that don’t match the name of the official websites. Some messages are also sent with grammar mistakes in English. If you want to confirm whether the notification is real making sure to call the official bank number on the main website.


If a mistake was made and you have pressed into the link, do not provide the website your email, username, or password. They will also try to request an OTP, do not provide the number sent to you, as this usually will allow the scammers to directly enter your bank account. Police are working with related sectors to arrest those behind the scams. But there are new scams coming out every day, do not press the links and call the official bank to make sure your funds are safe.

The article was unclear at first then clarified, it's a common phishing attempt, clicking on the links doesn't send any personal or banking details (it may confirm the eMail address or phone number is valid), they get those if you enter them in the form displayed on the bogus website.

Easy way to circumvent this, never click on links sent to you by e-mail or phone, search the bank (or tax revenue dptmt, shops etc) website through a search engine (or use your signets)

Oh, another thing now I remember - they said that whatever the attachment was, it was encrypted and could be opened only if I typed in my DOB.
