CCTV cameras in place to catch people using hard shoulder on expressways

The Expressway Authority of Thailand (EXAT) has made it clear-driving on the hard shoulder on expressways in Thailand will result in 1000 baht fines and authorities are using CCTV footage to catch offenders.

Major General Damrongsak Kittipraphat stated to the Thai press this week that the act of driving on the hard shoulder of expressways was against the Traffic Act of Thailand and brought 1000 baht fines to those who violate it.

The new rule officially started being enforced yesterday, April 5th, 2021, just before the upcoming Songkran holidays.

According to EXAT, the hard shoulder on the left side of expressways and people using them to drive is the cause of many accidents in the Kingdom of Thailand. As a result, EXAT is installing 32 CCTV cameras which will be used to catch offenders and charge them 1000 baht for violations of the law.

These have already been installed at ten locations on the Kanchanaphisek Expressway and are in the process of being installed at other expressways like the Chalerm Mahanakorn Expressway and the Burapha Withi Expressway.

They are the cause of the traffic jam that they are trying to get around by using the hard shoulder ,then cutting back in the proper lane slowing the drivers that are driving correctly, really irritating how selfish they are. I deal with it every morning. How do you deal with them? Just let them carry on or try impeding the hard shoulder lane? The police have parked a truck in some of the more troublesome areas and there was a noticeable difference, alas, they've stopped and all is back to Thai normality.

It takes someone with balls, which is me, to pull over into the hard shoulder and block them. The only problem now being if I get caught I'll get fined. But fuck that as the fine will be worth it.

The fine won't be enough to deter most. Van drivers are notorious for doing it. My Van driver used to do it almost daily. I didn't like him doing it but not my vehicle.

Are you paying him? If so, then you have a voice to tell him to stop or lose the business.

Actually no. The factory supplies and pays for the service. I suppose I could mention it to them but I like the guy and he has become my friend so it would be like ratting out a buddy.

But if that 'buddy' was to hit and kill/maim a pedestrian/child how would you feel for not having done something to prevent it? I know how I'd feel.

Lets be realistic. He is the driver. It is his responsibility not mine. If he was to have an unfortunate accident breaking the law he will pay the consequences. Quite honestly I have mentioned it to him a few times in indirect ways. Fortunately at this time, I work 100% remote so he has been off like most other factory van drivers. We still chat on and off but I haven't seen him in nearly 10 months and when I do start back at the factory it will be a new contract in the Chonburi area and a new driver. This behavior occurred when I was in BKK every day at the other factory.

I was once in a Bangkok taxi which overtook a truck on the inside, on the hard shoulder, whilst going around a corner. Normally this would cause my testicles to retract rather severely but another taxi driver had done it only the week before and I was aware that locals and professional drivers mostly know what they can do and get away with it.

However as soon as we rounded the corner we found a motorbike rider coming head-on towards us, the wrong way up OUR hard shoulder. Testicle retraction : 50%

Until the cops decide that the law WILL be upheld, just get used to it. It's another lane for lots of people when the traffic slows in the other lanes. It's always a risky manoeuvre though.

sometimes you need to be more direct. Tell him your an old, frightened farang and you need him to go slower etc.

I don't travel on vans and I forbid the wingman to do so.

They really are death machines driven by a species whose evolution has yet to conform with the rest of the human race.

When they crash the deformation of the sliding doors prevent the egress of the passengers crammed inside like sardines who then fry in the ensuing conflagration.

Well that's just it. I am not a frightened old farang, in fact he is a darn good driver sans a few times he rides on the shoulder when traffic jams up. I always tell him I am not in a hurry and joke, the pays the same. I do not even sit in the back, I ride shotgun up front. He is a private driver service so I have the van all to myself and he has picked me up on a few nights flat lit up and we laugh the next day as I didn't really remember the van ride back to my condo

I have only been in a few "Public Vans" and do not care for them. I know how Thai's maintain their vehicles. Its the "Wait until it breaks" PM philosophy. Even when I have taken a Public Van I tip the driver to let me sit in the front. I will not ride in the back.
