Thailand and the Netherlands Will Cooperate in Tackling Floods

BANGKOK (NNT) - Thailand and the Netherlands have agreed to cooperate in tackling floods and water management as the Netherlands has specialized in flood prevention and water management in urban areas and has the reputation of having one of the best water management systems.

Office of National Water Resources Secretary-General Somkiat Prajamwong and Ambassador of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, Kees Pieter Rade, signed the MoU regarding cooperation on integrated water resources management and climate change adaptation.

Mr. Somkiat said this cooperation would be valid for three years and be automatically extended by five years if neither party objects.

He said the two sides will exchange know-how on water management, assist experts who dealt with the national floods in 2011, find solutions for flooding problems in Bangkok and its vicinity, and improve the weather forecast system to be more accurate.

Only Thailand could do this in the middle of their worst drought in possibly 40 years.

    Drought Hits Thailand

(This is the bit where Jeff comes along and tells us it's not a drought, it's "dry season").

Keeping the storm water drains clean and clear would be a good start.

Yes, you did. You also missed the floods in October, and you also missed the reservoirs that were at over 100% capacity.

Prawit urges swift action as severe drought looms
"As of yesterday, the amount of water held in large and medium-sized state-built reservoirs and dams was recorded at 43 billion cubic metres, which is roughly half the level they need to be at to meet demand in the country over the coming months."

Thailand has had river monitoring system for years.

River flows, levels, predicted flooding .... Originally from a European country.

Thailand also set up a tsunami monitoring system years ago.

    Do you see a pattern?

It doesn't help when people have the memory of a goldfish with alzheimers.

The Thai National Water Vision was announced in July 2000 envisaging that by 2025 ‘Thailand will have sufficient water of good quality for all users … that will ensure equitable and sustainable use of water resources.”

But wait I hear you say....

Thailand has sought to restructure its water management strategy, approving a 20-year national strategy in 2018. The Office of National Water Resources (ONWR) is the new and singular government agency that regulates integrated national water resources management. By 2030, the ONWR plans to provide clean water to over 75,000 villages in 66 areas covering 5.5 million hectares by building more than 541,000 small dams to restore watershed areas at risk due to flood and drought.

It's a never ending succession of never ending strategies.

It is an annual thing... floods followed by droughts followed by floods followed by drought followed by ....

It's poor water management. I doubt Thailand will ever manage it well but good luck to the Dutch in whatever they try to convince the Thais to do.

As I said, my point was that it's a little bit of a joke calling someone in to fix flooding when you've just warned them about a drought.

I guess that subject is now closed.

    Now, about intra-government communication.....

Well, they have a few months with no flooding to help them get their act together to deal with future flooding issues better than before. I doubt they will though, and it seems they are only interested in looking at flooding in and around Bangkok and to hell with the rest of the country. Priorities, I suppose. The flood water must play hell with their Mercs and BMWs.
