Blackout on Koh Samui, Koh Pha Ngan after navy ship anchor damages underwater cable

A widespread blackout swept over Koh Samui and Koh Pha Ngan after a Thai navy ship anchor dropped on an underwater cable which supplies power to the islands in the Gulf of Thailand off the Surat Thani coast.

The 115kv cable runs from Nakhon Si Thammarat’s Khanom district to Koh Samui. The anchor damaged the cable about 2 kilometres out from the island, blacking out the tambons Bo Phut, Mae Nam and Maret, the Provincial Electricity Authority district manager Jakkrit Meedet told the Bangkok Post. The repair will take several days.

On the PEA Koh Samui Facebook page, the authority said electricity supply will be circulated for 1 hour per area and outage for 3 hours per area. Additional power generators are being sent to the island today. The authority is still supplying electricity to hospitals on the islands.

Apparently a similar incident happened back in 2018, Jakkrit says, and 6 mobile power-generating trucks were used to supply electricity to the island.

one would have thought that with all the millions the thai navy spends on equipment, their boats would have either had a simple chart or had the technology capable of identifying underwater cabling that has been present for many years.

either way, it demonstrates astounding incompetence from the captain of the vessel.

The FLAG cable, which runs through the Gulf and onwards, got trawled and broken at least three times over the last few decades.

I think they eventually made that whole area off limits for fishing in the GCC.

^ I saw 4-5 large navy boats South-West of Samui in a formation on Sunday, thought it was interesting as I never saw that many in that location before and was wondering what they were up to. Didn’t realise it was a crack cyber warfare team armed with high tech random anchors

Any Navy ship would have it? Do you know what kind of a ship was it?

There are much more sophisticated Navy ships with much more sophisticated equipment, however, that does not avoid a collusion even with another big ship clearly visible without any technology, not speaking about a underwater cable... (don't you remember the tread some time ago here, discussed for quite a long time?)

BTW, I happened to be on Koh Samui few years ago when just a similar problem had occurred. Staying there all the few days of the power outage, leaving the day when the problem was solved at last. Most of the better facilities are equipped with an own emergency generator, hence, the guests are not much impacted.

Power cuts happen most days on the island, but most last only a few seconds.

I know that there ain't any few seconds long power cuts here.
Power cuts here usually takes place during stormy weather when the high-voltage wires gets tangled, when tree branches fall into the wires, when lightning hits the wires, or when a cement pole falls down when being hit by a bad driver.
Those power cuts lasts anywhere between 1 to 6 hours, most common between 2-3 hours.

The thing about burning a bridge is that it's a bridge you've already crossed.

So it would be impossible to light your way with a bridge you've burned...it's behind you.

You are right.. If it was about setting fire to bridges.. but it is a metaphor
something like "may I learn from my mistakes" (instead of just repeating them and only get that déjà vu feeling)

Of course, but even a metaphor needs to kind of work.
