Myanmar junta leader says Australian adviser's detention revealed financial secrets:

(Reuters) - Myanmar junta leader Min Aung Hlaing said on Monday that the detention of an Australian financial adviser to Myanmar’s deposed leader Aung San Suu Kyi had led to the discovery of secret financial information, according to state-run MRTV television.

Australia has called for the release of Sean Turnell, who was detained on Feb. 6, five days after the coup that led to the arrest of Suu Kyi herself.

“An attempt to flee the country by the former government’s foreign economic adviser, Sean Turnell, was stopped in time and secret state financial information was found through him. Union-level ministers are taking legal actions in relation to that issue,” MRTV quoted the junta leader as saying.

Myanmar releasing 4 foreigners in broad prisoner amnesty
By DAVID RISING The Associated Press,Updated November 17, 2022

BANGKOK (AP) — Myanmar’s military-controlled government announced Thursday it was releasing and deporting an Australian academic, a Japanese filmmaker, an ex-British diplomat and an American as part of a broad prisoner amnesty to mark the country’s National Victory Day.

Australian Sean Turnell, Japan's Toru Kubota, Briton Vicky Bowman, and American Kyaw Htay Oo, as well as 11 local Myanmar celebrities, were among a total of 5,774 prisoners who were being released, Myanmar's state-run MRTV reported.

The imprisonment of the foreign nationals had been a source of friction between Myanmar's leaders and their home governments, which had been lobbying for their release.

Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong tweeted that she welcomed reports of Turnell being released, but would not comment further for the time being.

Turnell, 58, an associate professor in economics at Sydney’s Macquarie University who had been serving as an advisor to Suu Kyi, was arrested by security forces at a hotel in Yangon just days after last year's military takeover. He was sentenced in September to three years in prison for violating the country’s official secrets law and immigration law.

No hurry Penny, I'm sure they're happy enough behind bars at Insein Prison

"Professor Turnell continues to be our first priority," Wong said on Twitter.
Earlier this month, Wong said Australia was considering imposing sanctions on Myanmar.

Perhaps they could add it to the secret financial information they already have?
