Songkran should happen this year: tourism, culture ministries

Six weeks from now, will Thailand be ready to return to packing the streets to spray water and touch each other’s faces?
Sure, with limitations, said the heads of culture and tourism, signaling that the infamously wild, wet street party of Songkran would return next month after being called off two years in a row.
Culture Minister Ittipol Khunpluem and Tourism Minister Yutthasak Suppasorn yesterday said their offices supported the return of Songkran – the traditional Thai New Year’s festival that runs April 13-15 – so long as COVID-19 health measures were strictly followed.

While coronavirus vaccines aren’t expected to reach the masses until June, the April festival would give the economy a shot in the arm.
The number of people at Songkran events would be limited to prevent the spread of COVID-19. For popular destinations such as Khaosan Road, Ittipol said the rules would be decided by local authorities.
Songkran was cancelled last year due to the pandemic and in 2019 for the king’s coronation.

However, the final word rests with the Ministry of Public Health and COVID-19 task force, which will again consider the current rate of infection. They are expected to officially announce whether Songkran events can go ahead by mid-March.

This year should be enjoyable without all the fuckwit tourists making an absolute [at][at][at][at] of themselves.

Songkran is fine for a day but it is a moveable feast in practice and often extends for over a week, and in overlapping chanwats can go on for even longer.

I loathe it not least because it affords an already infantile and recklessly stupid people more opportunity to indulge in their puerile fuckwittery.

However, best way to do it is to pick a place, preferably Nana, and position yourself within a chosen bar - I preferred the old Hanrahans - and get uproariously drunk whilst wet-shirting the perky nipples of the jezebel whoopsies taking a welcome break from their work mining revenue from ugly white blue collar oiks.

Yeah of course there are no Thais making 'an absolute [at][at][at][at]' [sic.] of themselves.

Makes one wonder why pretty much all the complaints of sexual assaults, for example, seem to involve only Thais.

Though you don't seem the type to pass up an opportunity, admittedly.

Its eating you up that he is not only much more successful than you but also happy. But not much you can do about it when you are stuck in the position you are in. Nobody envies you that is for sure.

^^^No, I was the guy hired on obscene day-rates by clients to make sure the contractors did what they said they'd do during the bid rounds. The people in offices from both sides pushing paperwork nobody gave a flying fuck about had no idea about such things, obviously, but as long as I could dumb my reports down enough for them to understand how things actually work in the real world and my invoices were paid in a timely manner I didn't ridicule them too often.

So, Headwank, I was right, a glorified ditch digger, a journeyman with dirty boots spending the wet weather season mongering in his Soi Buakow billet.

    You chaps are so transparent.

Nothing intrinsically wrong with that or your work, it's just that you are so well defined by it, and that goes for your ilk.

Quite why you take such umbrage at being reminded of it is mystifying.

Anyone might think you are secretly ashamed of your crudity and rough ways.

^^Not even close, got to travel the world (in J Class) extensively while getting paid ridiculously generous tax-free U$D and having to slum it in 5* hotels while on company time doing a job I absolutely loved. Meanwhile, you shuffled paperwork from one pile to another waiting for old age or the sack to kick in before moving to somewhere you utterly despise to be a miserable cvnt

I'm meeting half a dozen mates and some of their partners too this afternoon for drinks and socialising, as we generally do on a Friday. Think about how that must be while you sit at home alone add scathing comments to news stories in The Sun and Mirror for your Friday enjoyment you fucking melt

Songkran is fun. I prefer the village parties. Up here there is a road they basically close off, set up a stage for music and dancers, all along the road people are set up with loads of various water weapons. I usually cruise through it on my Wave with a fully loaded super soaker with tanks and have some fun. The food is great. The people are fun, the music is descent.

    It's fun for all

And yet you express yourself as a lumpen, ill-educated oik.

    Gosh, what a paradox.

any dedicated sybarite worth his himalayan salt and on a "ridiculously generous tax-free U$D" wedge would be paying to upgrade to f class, rather than slum it in j.

i have never been able to understand why foremen feel the need to boast about their salaries and lifestyle at every possible opportunity.

    insecurity i suppose.

Many airlines have reduced and are phasing out first class seating. The new lie flat business seats are such a better value. Plus the few seats left in first are mostly there for the J class passenger with mileage award certificates to get free upgrades to first.

First time I've ever even mentioned it Rajid, and that was only because your best mate and fellow brittle fuckwitt brings up how *superior* your class are and how jealous blue-collar oik ditch diggers must be of your type in pretty much every post. But I'll tell you this, not much ever made me feel better than boarding planes then turning left in my jeans, polo, and runners. Meanwhile, the likes of you and sausages with your superior educations and office jobs turned right wearing your suits and hoping like fuck no riff-raff workers with tanned skin or calluses would be sitting next to you.

The best Songkran I've ever been to is Korat. Get away from the tourist areas and up to Isaan with the locals on the somtam pla ra and lao khao.

Loss of bladder control is not the same as Songkran, what you are experiencing in a symptom of aging old chap.

Gosh, Tax, he's just soooooo defensive.

Poor chap's evidently been polishing that chip on his shoulder for a long, long time.

Look, everyone knows the sergeants mess tends to be more fun, just accept it. Just don't forget your place, eh?

The usual bullshit. People rotting away in office cubicals , making reports that nobody reads , think they are superior to anyone working in the field.

But yeah. Some ppl who work in the field are fat unkept slobs , and they are a legitimate target. And they give everyone working in the field a bad name.

Unfortunately, recently the working generation in Bangkok can only return to the village New Year or Songkran, very few can manage both. The village manages to fund a big Songkran party every 2 or 3 years and then it is generally great fun. Disappointing if you are used to the water/flour/silly stuff though as this is rarely seen our way. Fantastic for me to see the kids I looked after grown up and having fun...It 's not going to happen this year, they're waiting for things to settle down and to celebrate the end of Covid...
