1.7 million Thais with no smartphones register for "Rao Chana" benefits

BANGKOK (NNT) - The Rao Chana scheme has seen a large number of Thais who don’t have smartphones visiting the branches of Krung Thai Bank (KTB) and its mobile units around the country to register in person for the government’s 7,000-baht benefit. Although it is a long weekend, the mobile units have been operating daily to ensure every eligible person gets registered and receives the benefit as soon as possible.

Fiscal Policy Office Director, Kulaya Tantitemit, as the spokesperson of the Finance Ministry, has confirmed that during the weekend, KTB mobile units have been open for business to provide a registration service for people who do not have a smart phone and want to register for the government’s stimulus package aimed at helping people financially-affected by the Covid-19 outbreak.

For those without a smartphone, registration opened in two rounds. The first one closed on 21st February. Eligibility was verified and announced on 4th March, and recipients could start spending on 5th March. The second round of registrations will continue until 5th March. The verification results will be announced on 15th March, and they can start spending from 19th March onwards.

Spending through this project has reached 58 billion baht. Local vendors have also benefitted from the project as their sales have increased despite complaints that the electronic payment system was down occasionally. The government allocated 210 billion baht to this project, expecting to financially support the people during tough times, while helping to revive the economy, especially small businesses, at the same time.

Our local KTB branch was mobbed. This morning there were at least 200 people outside BAAC. It seems that KTB couldn't handle the volumes so the government has involved other banks.

^And ours as well, both today and it would seem every day in the latter part of February. A very poor experience for these folks...the lucky ones eventually had chairs in the shade outside the bank but there were seemingly dozens of others waiting in the direct sun for hours before getting even that far.

The sheer inability of Thai to foresee consequences of decisions before they are taken almost constitutes a phenomenon beyond any human undserstanding.

To dismiss them as merely stupid is perhaps a little too simplistic given their lack of foresight is evidenced in pretty much every endeavour on which they may chance to embark.

Remember the decision to seal Pattaya last year with strategically sited roadblocks in order to test those entering the city environs for COVID? Inside two hours the traffic jams extended as far back as the eye could see effectively jamming the entire infrastructure connecting the city with Chonburi and Rayong. It was abandoned after one day.

Remember the decision last year to force all foreign tourists to register for permission to remain because there were no flights out to their home countries? At one stage the queues extended to over 12 hours in the hot sun as the tens of thousands were herded cattle like into corrals before they realised it was beyond stupidity, unmanageable and inhumane, and simply deemed extensions like every other country.

And then this year in Chonburi they decided that a permit to leave the chanwat was required and all who wished to apply must first attend the relevant amphur to submit in writing their reasons for doing so. The first day the lines extended into such long days that for many their plans became utterly redundant. The next day they expand ed the licensing authorities to include the police and employers.

The power cable laid through a city pedestrian bridge and the tree bifurcating a single carriageway upcountry of course are the legendary examples of their foolishness but it really is quite amazing just how dim they can be.

Remember that decision to buy a Pattaya condo? You know, the one you have been trying to shift for years without success.
Did you ever consider the consequences of that little faux pas when you plunged into property purchase in a third world country?

    Har fucking har.

You really are a very strange little man. Do you masturbate alone or do you have one of your drunken ocker mates to help you?

Your personal foresight is bound only by your fantasies. I would prefer it if you could avoid fantasies involving me, thank you.
You are absolutely the last person on the planet to be lecturing anyone about forward thinking, and the unpredictable consequences of those decisions.
Personal attacks on me is really grubbing in the dust for the failures you have made.
