Firefighters battle forest fires in Chiang Mai

CHIANG MAI (NNT) - A satellite has detected more than one hundred hot spots in Chiang Mai Province, most of which are on steep hills in forest conservation areas.

Most of the hot spots were found in Sansai, Mae Chaem and Doi Saket districts. The areas are among the controlled zones which are prohibited from outdoor burning during the dry season, beginning on 1st March. The Chiang Mai governor recently announced a ban on any type of burning for sixty days in order to prevent forest fires and smog. Farmers in the area are suspected of speeding up burning to dispose of agricultural debris and to clear the land for the next round of planting before the burning ban begins on Monday.

The local forest fire control station has sent out firefighters to control fires in the forest, but many spots were inaccessible due to the distance and geographical conditions.

The local administration has asked the Ministry of Natural Resources and the Environment to send helicopters to spray water over the inaccessible areas to control the situation, allowing more room and safety for firefighters on the ground to do their work. The operation has continued throughout the weekend.

That's why I smelled smoke last night, I was thinking that a neighbor didn't get the memo but then I heard firetrucks sirens far away...

Few chances they catch anybody, those motivated enough for the mushrooms use devices that delay the fire by hours, long after they're gone.

With my poor English I did not get the clue. There are many mushrooms farms outside of C. M. , they are surely not happy with these fires. Nor the poor people collecting wild mushrooms in the forest.

However Harry with his colorful language knows more...

^if you believe this crap of Bkk Post when a journalist from Bkk from his boring job in Bkk gets a nice trip for a week to the North, speaking with Forestry people who hardly leave their a/c offices, have you ever seen one?

    As one had remarked:
The data also shows that the leading cause of forest fires in those provinces was locals hunting for mushrooms. In Chiang Mai it happened 754 times, in Mae Hong Son 84 times, and in Lampang 216 times.

But Decho Chaitup, the manager of the Chiang Mai-based Sustainable Development Foundation, said burning for mushrooms and other plants is only a tiny part of the bigger picture, and that the official data is flawed.

He said there are 2,066 villages in Chiang Mai province, about 1,600 of which are situated in forest areas. But he said burning for mushrooms contributed to less than 18% of the North’s haze problem.

Mr Decho identified four primary causes of haze: forest fires, agricultural burn-off, pollution from cities and industrial estates, and similar problems happening in bordering countries like Laos and Myanmar.
BTW, how the mushrooms would look like after such fire? Easy to sell on market?

There are many hidden agendas in Forestry business, many of them are directed on distracting from the real problems...

I usually try and hear out old Klondyke but sometimes he is simply out there.

Klondyke, this is a known fact on the fires so that when the rains come the mushrooms grow in the burned out debris.

Same on your comment about fishing in another thread. The Wang river is not a game fishing place. The Thai folks living along it have depleted it of everything live aquatic creature. It's just how it is. Just like the fires and the mushrooms. Years ago my FIL and his wife used to burn forest areas with other locals to prepare for mushrooms. They don't understand that sure they make a few baht at market they are killing all their customers with smoke.

How is that Electric Scooter working out.

^^^ The mushroom point is accurate, the fires help them to sprout and it's easier to spot and pick them later on.

I have in-laws in this area and took parts in mushroom picking sessions with them and asked many questions on how this works.

Of course you can always have a case of fire for the sake of clearing land for agriculture or real-estate project but it's not as common as mushroom-related fires.

    Er... no.

The mushrooms grow on the forest floor and are difficult to spot beneath the thick layer of dried leaves which blanket it. The easiest way to find them is to simply set fire to the undergrowth, then search the cleared ground.

Ol Klondyke is generally OK HB. He can get a bit thick sometimes but maybe its meds or something. I asked about his scooter as I was wondering about his well being. A few nose dives with a knock to the noggin can make one a bit slow.

I just asked my FIL. He said the burning causes a reaction in the underlying debris and ground and mushrooms will grow. He said it does take long. A few weeks and you can see them poking up, mostly around tree bases.

Nevertheless they are ignorant as the impact to the environment and people so they can have a few in Tom Yum soups is silly. . I prefer coconut in mine anyway.

Obviously, from your drone and superfast bike you cannot spot what I am seeing, with daily gaming fishers - beside the ones supplying local markets. And beside the restaurants with the cages of plaa nin under their eatery you hardly frequent.

The green plants shown are under water surface, some up to 1 m depth

Quite easy to spot from one of my 2 el. scooters when browsing around to enjoyment of my dogs. However, perhaps not so exciting when not having Harley-like handles...

As the BKK Post article about CH.M. fires - 7 years ago - says that the mushroom fires make just 18% of all fires - wondering how they get the figures that are flawed anyway - the main fires are caused by other means bringing substantially more to other people than the mere mushrooms to poor villagers.

They have HB, they burn their land which accidently burns the adjacent land that no ones visits thus they have more to gather....

    @ ol Klondyke,
Not sure what you are showing me here buddy. Its a pic of the river. I can go down and take a bunch of pics just like that. Still do not see anybody hooked up with nice game fish. As I said, Its a nice river with a few small fish and nets every 50 yards apart catching everything.

Lets be honest here Klondyke, there is no conservation here. They fish it clean until it is just a water way.

That is a very loose description of "farming"

Incidentally there are a couple of papers on research into farming these.

If they are as expensive as they say someone in Thailand should put some effort into it.

Perhaps, I have missed your point. Are you suggesting that the people around the river should "conserve" the river habitat? How exactly they should do it? We are in the 3rd world country, I don't know how poor people in rural North California...

And I did not think on a need to provide pictures of game and other style fishing in the river I am seeing every day.

Perhaps I will start a new thread about that (knowing a thing or two about the river life). Otherwise somebody here would be concerned of soiling the thread of forest fire by a water? Quite a similar element, isn't it? But I am innocent, not started by me...

(Just being released from hospital after a successful hip joint replacement, still alive against the odd I read once her, no wheelchair around, just my electric scooter... perhaps a topic for a new thread...)

Back to the topic of firing the mushrooms:

Yes, there are numerous farms behind Ch.M., - het hoom, perfume mushrooms - didn't I mention it above? Many of them can be found on the road from Ch.M. to Chiang Rai on the hills at right hand side. First time I was visiting few of them, it was some 25 years ago, having some intentions, however not realized.

There are many videos on YT. Quite interesting procedure of the growing...

This annual fire season problem is fixable if the government enforces the law. Bring in police from other areas and grab wrongdoers and prosecute. The local forestry units aren't going to get involved for obvious reasons.
