Thread: Thailand officially enters summer

BANGKOK (NNT) - The Meteorological Department announced today that the Thai winter has ended and Thailand is now welcoming summer with temperatures of 35 degrees Celsius or more to be expected.


Summer in Thailand this year officially began on 27th February. During the day, most areas in the upper north of the country are facing hot weather, with maximum temperatures of at least 35 degrees Celsius. A sign of the season changing from winter to summer is the arrival of southeastern and southerly winds that have replaced the northeastern monsoon in the northern part of Thailand.


The northern and northeastern regions have remained cool in the morning, and hilltops will continue to experience cool weather for a little longer. Summer is expected to end mid May.

Dreading for me. But this cool season was really nice. Long by Thai standards.

The weather has taken a change in Korat over the last couple of days.

The wind/breeze has changed direction too. It has been coming from a north-easterly direction for weeks but since Wednesday it has come from the south-west.

It's not only the north. Places like Hua Hin and Ko Samui also get the north eastern monsoon winds. The problem is that cool weather means it's dry and that means dust and smog. Places like Phuket and Hat Yai have no cool season but no hot season either and no regular air pollution.

The seasonal transition also brings an increase in humidity which is of course what makes the region so fucking uncomfortable. Today it's at the 79% mark here in Pattaya where the warm unstable moist air from the SW has clashed with the remnants of the cooler northerly airstream triggering local thunderstorms.

That 'cold' season was one of the best in the past decade or so, absolute bliss with cool breezes and dry warm midday temperature of 28-31c dropping down to 21-23c most nights for nigh on two and a half months.

Cool breezes laced with toxins. My best friend lives in Hua Hin. She said the cool season used to be her favourite but now it's her least favourite because it's so damn unhealthy and unpleasant and even the close horizon has a white haze to it.

The first week of the year was nice here and it stayed relatively cool for two months, which was pleasant. The nearby hills, the lamphu in Nongbualamphu, were crystal clear at the end of December, now they are a milky shadow. One thing that is rather beautiful in a sad way is the full moon which rises a rusty red through the haze at this time of year.

We had a trace of rain in the night. That will help clear the air.

Hat Yai is a filthy polluted stinkin hot overcrowded bastard of a place, situated in a bowl below sea level which fucks with the atmospheric dome that surrounds it resulting in rain every day around 3pm.

Had some showers of rain roll in from the north west this morning in northern Nan province and about to get some more in the next hour. Not a lot of rain but welcome none the less. 31 today and tomorrow then back to 35+.

Ever been to Hat Yai?

Yes I spent quite a lot of time there but I forgot to attach my portable sea level gauge to my big fat ass, so unfortunately I have to rely on these satellite measurements.
