Speed Limit Will Be Raised to 120kph in April

BANGKOK (NNT) - The speed limit for roads with four lanes or more will be raised from 90 kilometres per hour to 120kph.

Transport Minister Saksayam Chidchob said the new speed limit should be announced in the Royal Gazette by April, after a study by the Department of Highways, Department of Rural Roads, Department of Land Transport and Office of Transport and Traffic Policy and Planning.

He said the new speed limit aims to help traffic flow under current traffic conditions while ensuring road users’ convenience and safety.

Saksayam explained the ministry found it was suitable to raise the speed limit for personal vehicles of less than seven seats from 90kph to 120kph on straight sections of roads with more than four lanes and no intersections or U-turns. The ministry will also raise the speed limit for other vehicles on eligible roads.

^ It is nationally on dual carriageways unless otherwise stated. I think 120 is going to kill a few more people up our way, 90 was too fast for many.

Won't hear from the same goon come Songkran, he'll be in the back room trying to figure out why his cunning plan failed, while some underling does the now familiar whinge about speed causing so many extra road deaths; then the booze tsar will say no more booze between whichever hours the darts land, dear leader will promise that something might or might not be done about these needless deaths, and Immigration will save the day by blaming the farang.

Not many 4 lanes road without U-turn up North but anyway, many people tend to drive faster than 90 kph, me included and I'm not a fast driver... in some places the speed limit is not adapted to road design (e.g 60 in straight 2 lane road with no junction nearby), I hope they plan to review that.

I guess they could assess their new policy when they get sufficient hindsight (road deaths trend, number of accident where a speed of 90 instead of 120 would have changed significantly the outcome...).

Wish they would increase the limit on the 7 motorway, sick of getting speeding fines in the mail.

And that's the problem - how well will 120 be enforced? Hardly at all - more deaths

They will raise it to 120 because 90 is working out so well.
Will it be April 1st ?

Fair enough and noted. I must admit, I assumed 4 lane carriageways where 100, 110 or 120. I cannot fathom them being 90.

The roads this will cover most already drive at 120km/h+ anyways.

Enforcement is via speed camera's.. I average at least a dozen tickets a month.

No enforcement from what I can see. Got a company van to Rayong a few months back and the driver kept trying to drive 130 kph within a car length of the vehicle in front. I kept yelling at him in Thai to slow down every time he sped up again. Thai drivers are THE worst in the world even if they work for you.

    Slow learner?

If going to Pattaya outside BKK it is already 120 except for the occasional klong bridge where it reduces to 90 to avoid unexpected take-off.

BTW The speed limit within Bangkok is 80 kph. This includes tollways and Hwy 7

A video of the event to company management might have been prudent before he kills someone.

I always cruise along 120 to 130 from Sattahip to Lampang. While the speed limit is 90, the cameras are typically set at 110ish before they activate and their range and field is view is very narrow. The camera set ups are easy to see. Virtually all are on walk overs as that's the only place power exists. When you see a speed camera sign, just look at the walk over coming up and slow down then speed back up. There a few hidden ones but I located them and remember when getting near them.

As for the speed law changing, I think it will have minimal impact on accidents, most of the road accidents are typically motorcycle related and on those big highways scooters are not out on them. I just drove back from Koh Chang. I didn't see one accident and I zipped along at 120+

Am on my second can of Leo 8 when I go past the camera and i forget..... Mile marker 62.4 is the current location of the camera... I think.

FWIW between Patts and BKK on the 7 there is 4 camera's... in each direction.

^ Too fast for the NE in my opinion. The new highways cut through villages with no side roads. The 60 limit is ignored and this results in large differences in speed. The U-turns are too far apart and without underpasses tractors and motorbikes end up crossing the central reservation. Hell, I've seen all sorts of traffic going in the opposite direction of the fast lane as a short cut to junctions.

It may be okay in the Bangkok/Pattaya area to travel fast. Less so in the more rural areas.

I am used to driving fast, living in Germany, but 90-100 is plenty fast enough where we are.

Does not apply to those roads that have U-Turns.
