Canadian Embassy to help Thailand recruit English teachers

Thailand officials want more native speaking English teachers and plan to recruit more than 10,000 English teachers for 300 schools to improve English proficiency among Thai students. To help draw in potential teachers, the Education Ministry is teaming up with the Canadian Embassy in Thailand.

Teachers will be placed in schools once the pandemic has eased. Recruitment for the plan is expected to be completed by May, according to Education Minister Nataphol Teepsuwan. He says the Cabinet has approved an agreement between the ministry, embassy and the Thai-Canadian Chamber of Commerce for the recruitment plan.

The ministry plans to focus on teaching language in early levels of education because young students are at a suitable age for building communication skills, Nataphol says. Teachers will be either native English speakers or Thai teachers who hold an English degree, according to Nataphol.

Along with 10,000 English teachers, the Cabinet also plans to recruit 10,000 Chinese teachers. Teachers will also receive training.

That's an unusual choice for a recruiting partner. I would have thought the American or British embassy would be in a better position to accommodate. I'd like to hear the backstory on this. Maybe one of the Canadian embassy workforce is providing special favours to someone in the Ministry of Education. Maybe a frog. We all know what the froggies are capable of.

At 30+ teachers per school, will they be turning the gym into the English teacher's staff room?

Will the embassy be using the One Rai embassy rule to actually own it?

Yer, assess and elbows perfectly describes Thai ministries; they'll have to muzzle Immigration first, then open talks with other relevant agencies, and it won't work anyway but some key players can further feather their nests.

...once the pandemic subsides, getting 10K Canadians to teach in Thailand shouldn't be a challenge at all...until the 10K arrive and find they'll be teaching 50+ students in non-a/c classrooms with little admin support. Trained and experienced teachers, you ask? Probably not, just non-frog native speakers persuaded by scenic beach brochures, night-life tales and an opportunity to travel to the exotic Orient. Pay? Well, it may be offered as a Peace Corps-type of experience: you'll suffer a bit but think of the stories you'll have...in lieu of savings...more magical thinking, I'm afraid...

I have lost count of the number of times I have heard this nonsense over the past 20 years.

They really are quite stupid with this sort of bombastic crap that never comes to fruition.. The problem lies in the quality of teacher training and the educational system.

They would do far, far better in sending student teachers to AUS/US/NZ/UK/IRE/CAN for an intensive course of study in English for a year with an element kept for a further year+ to train them as cascade trainers back in LoS.
