Drunken Phuket police officer shoots noodle vendor on Bangla Rd

PHUKET: A 25-year-old noodle vendor from Trang was shot and beaten by a Phuket Provincial Police officer on Bangla Rd, Patong, before dawn this morning (Feb 23).

Phuket Provincial Police Commander Maj Gen Pornsak Nuannu confirmed that the noodle vendor, Aroon Thongplab, is still alive but remains in intensive care at Vachira Phuket Hospital.

Maj Gen Pornsak explained that police together with Kosuldharm rescue workers were called to the scene at about 6am.

Officers arrived to find Mr Aroon on the road in front of the 7-Eleven store on Bangla Rd.

He had been shot once in his left side of his stomach.

Mr Aroon was rushed to Patong Hospital and later transferred to Vachira Phuket Hospital, Maj Gen Pornsak explained.

While rescue workers were administering CPR to Mr Aroon, police found the shooter, Cpl Pornthep Channarong of the Phuket Provincial Police, standing nearby.

The officers took Cpl Pornthep to Patong Police Station for questioning.

Police also found at the scene a 9mm handgun, as well as nine bullet casings and two live bullets.

Witnesses at the scene told police that Cpl Pornthep was drunk and wanted to enter the Illusion nightclub, but the guard did not let him in as he was carrying a gun.

While the guard was blocking him from entering the club, Cpl Pornthep pointed his gun to the road and shot the noodle vendor who was walking past.

CCTV footage from cameras along Bangla Rd showed Mr Aroon suddenly fall to the ground and call out for help.

Cpl Pornthep walked up to Mr Aroon, pointed a handgun at him and fired at close range.

It appears that shot did not hit Mr Aroon.

After firing the gun, Cpl Pornthep walked back to in front of the nightclub.

The CCTV footage showed Mr Aroon keep begging for help, then collapse face-up on the ground, after which Cpl Pornthep ran up to Mr Aroon, spoke to him and slapped his face.

Cpl Pornthep is then seen pulling Mr Aroon’s by his right hand to pull him over to lean face forward on the ground, then he kicked Mr Aroon in the bottom.

Maj Gen Pornsak told the press today that police are investigating the scene and collecting evidence at the scene.

Patong Police Chief Col Sujin Nilabodi declined to reveal details of the investigation so far, saying that the information given by Cpl Pornthep was confusing “as he was still drunk”.

Maj Gen Naphanwut Liamsa-nguan of the Region 8 Police explained that Cpl Pornthep had already been ordered to transfer from Phuket Provincial Police to Region 8 Police before the shooting this morning.

Cpl Pornthep and other officers were scheduled to report themselves at the Region 8 Police headquarters at 1pm today, Maj Gen Naphanwut said.

Maj Gen Naphanwut did not reveal why Cpl Pornthep had already been transferred.

the thai press report that just before this incident the policeman had an argument with a foreigner, drew his gun and fired into the air, and that the noodle seller had 2 gunshot wounds, one to the back and one in the armpit.

a drunken armed police officer in a tourist area firing randomly and injuring innocent victims..... and it does even make the national or international news. drunken cops have been shooting innocent members of the public for years. the thai police, at street level at least, must be the most unprofessional, the most poorly trained, the most ignorant self serving chickenheaded morons on the planet.

It must be stressful for cops in these tourist places without their normal supply of tourists to shake down.

That this scumbag was transferred from one post to another, no doubt due to drunken, reckless behaviour, and not dismissed in disgrace tells us all what we need to know about this medieval, brutal and corrupt society.

Doubtless he will receive a minimal sentence, to be served as a trusty and commuted after a short interval whereupon he will run some clip joint of his own.

First offence, will be moved sideways if he promises not to do it again, or at least play fair with a warning shot.

Phuket police officer faces attempted murder charge over Bangla shooting

PHUKET: The drunken Phuket police officer who shot a noodle vendor on Bangla Rd, Patong, early yesterday morning will face at least three charges, including attempted murder, the Phuket Provincial Police chief has confirmed.

Phuket Provincial Police Commander Maj Gen Pornsak Nuannu late yesterday explained that he has ordered investigating officers to prosecute the shooter, Cpl Pornthep Channarong, with every criminal charge that can be applied.

“I have already ordered Patong Police to process him three charges: attempted murder, carring a firearm in a public area without necessary reason, and firing a weapon in a public area,” Maj Gen Pornsak said.

“I have also already reminded the chief of every police station across the island to take care of their subordinates’ discipline and raised the issue about carrying firearms.

“Carrying firearms is to prevent any type of crime that may happen, not to commit a crime by themselves like this incident. If I see any police doing such a thing, I will decisively proceed in terms of both officer discipline and criminal charges,” he said.

“Cpl Pornthep is now in custody of Patong Police for questioning. At this stage, he told us that on that night he drank to celebrate his transfer. He and Mr Aroon had never known each other.

“For Mr Aroon, he is still in a worrying condition and under close care at Vachira Phuket Hospital,” Maj Gen Pornsak added.

Phuket Provincial Police Deputy Commanders Col Arrayapan Pukbaukhao and Col Chaiwat Ui-kham, both former Patong POlice Chiefs, and current Patong Police Chief Col Sujin Sujin Nilabodi yesterday afternoon visited the noodle vendor, Aroon Thongplab, at Vachira Phuket Hospital.

The officers also presented a vase of flowers to Mr Aroon’s wife. The police commanders offered her words of comfort and promised that police action in the case would proceed seriously and in a straight-forward manner.

At 8:30am today (Feb 24), Region 8 Police Commander Lt Gen Kitrat Panpetch also visited the hospital to present a gift basket to Mr Aroon’s wife

Phuket Provincial Police yesterday revealed through a statement that Lt Gen Kitrat had already ordered a disciplinary investigation into the incident and ordered for Cpl Pornthep to be dismissed from the Royal Thai Police.

“I came to visit Mr Aroon and cheer up his relatives. I want his relatives and people to not be worried about this case, as we will proceed this case decisively,” Lt Gen Kitrat said today.

“I do not compromise in dealing with our officers in incidents like this, and I can confirm that he already has been dismissed from the Royal Thai Police,” he said.

“The incident was caused by an officer who did something wrong that our organisation does not want. We are a big organisation with more than 200,000 officers under our control. Our officers are not all bad like this,” he said.

At the hospital late yesterday, Mr Aroon’s wife, told reporters, “I have seen the CCTV footage of the incident, and I cannot accept that. I have never seen anything like this, and it should not be a police officer committing crime like this.

“My husband has been working so hard for the past six years for me and our children. We have a 4-year-old daughter and 3-month-old son,” she said.

“Normally, he works as a motorbike taxi driver, but a few days ago he went to help his mum to sell noodles. He was shot while he was walking back from collecting a noodle bowl,” she explained.

Mr Aroon’s wife also left her husband’s hospital room to pray to the Buddha image at the hospital. She wished for more people to donate blood to help her husband’s recovery.

“For his condition, the doctor told me that the bullet went through his lung. He lost a lot of blood. We need a lot of Type B blood for him,” she said.

The Vachira Hospital blood centre is on the 4th floor of Vachira Phuket Hospital. to contact, call 076- 361- 234 ext. 1285 or visit their Facebook page.

Alternatively, blood donations can be made through the Thai Red Cross Phuket Regional Blood Centre, located at 38/193 Rattanakosin 200 Pi Rd in Talad Neua, Phuket Town. Call 076-251178 or 081-9588854.

He'll still have to cough up though. And possibly become a monk for a week or so.

Police oppose bail for Bangla shooter

PHUKET: The Patong Police Chief today confirmed that police have appealed to the court to deny bail to the Phuket police officer now facing an attempted murder charge for shooting a noodle vendor on Bangla Rd in Patong early Tuesday morning.

Patong Police Chief Col Sujin Nilabordi confirmed the news today (Feb 25) as Pornthep Channarong was taken back to Bangla Rd to re-enact his actions that led to the shooting of noodle vendor Aroon Thongplab early Tuesday morning.

Mr Aroon was shot in the stomach by Pornthep, who was off duty as a corporal with the Phuket Provincial Police at the time, while he was walking along the street after collecting a noodle bowl from a customer just before 6am.

Drunken police officer denies Bangla shooting charges

PHUKET: Pornthep Channarong, the corporal with the Phuket Provincial Police who was drunk off-duty when he shot 25-year-old noodle vendor Aroon Thongplab in the stomach on Bangla Rd in Patong in February, has entered a plea of not guilty and will fight the charges against him in court.

Mr Aroon was shot in the stomach by Pornthep just before 6am on Feb 23 while he was walking along the Bangla Rd after collecting a noodle bowl from a customer.

In less than 24 hours Pornthep was quickly stripped of his rank and discharged from the Royal Thai Police, and now faces charges of attempted murder, carring a firearm in a public area without necessary reason, and firing a weapon in a public area.

A CCTV video showing Pornthep shooting Mr Aroon and then taunting him, including playfully kicking Mr Aroon on the backside while Mr Aroon lay writhing on the ground in agony pleading for mercy, sparked outrage among the local community.

However, Pornthep has now entered a plea of not guilty to the charges against him, explained Kerdphol Kaewkerd, a Bangkok-based lawyer who is providing free legal assistance to Mr Aroon and his wife, Kulthida Chananan.

“During the first time he was being questioned, on May 19, he entered a plea of guilty to all charges,” Mr Kerdphol explained to The Phuket News yesterday (June 29).

“At that time he did not have a lawyer, so the court appointed him a lawyer because the penalty of the charges is high,” he added.

“The lawyer may have told him to confess and enter a plea of guilty for whatever reason I do not know,” he said.

“Then yesterday [Monday, June 28], the court had heard witness testimonies and examined the defendant’s confession, and he had a new lawyer,” Mr Kerdphol explained.

“He refused all charges and told the court he would fight the case. He explained that he had never had an argument with Mr Aroon and did not have any intention to kill him,” he said.

“He explained that he shot Mr Aroon as he was trying to stop foreigners from arguing. He said he fired the gun into the air three times.

“He said that naturally people would run away when they hear the sound of gunfire, but Mr Aroon walked close to the area, which is not practical. Then he shot him because he thought Aroon was a bad man,” Mr Kerdphol said.

“As he has denied the charges against and wants the fight the case, we need to restart the court process. We need to try our best to collect evidence and present it to the court,” he added.

“The court will hear witness testimonies and examine evidence again on August 23,” he said.

Asked about Mr Aroon’s condition, Mr Kedphol noted, “He has already been discharged from hospital, and his wife is taking close care of him.”

Mr Aroon was left paralysed by the bullet, which entered through the stomach and became lodged in his spine. After Mr Aroon woke from a coma, doctors at Vachira Phuket Hospital managed to safely remove the bullet, but were unable to help Mr Aroon recover the use of his legs.

After months in recovery, Mr Aroon was only recently discharged from Vachira Hospital to return to stay with his family at their rented house in Patong.

“While the criminal case continues, in terms of a civil case, I have asked for B15 million. in compensation for his paralysis, to cover the cost for living in the future, and the cost of losing opportunity and income,” Mr Kerdphol said.

“I do not know whether the police can pay that big amount,” he added.

“However, it is his right to fight the case. From the CCTV footage, I would like him to repeatedly think of the quote by Mr Chuwit Kamolvisit, ‘Su tid nae, Pae tid nan’,” Mr Kerdphol noted.

The quote translates to mean, “If you fight the case, you will surely be imprisoned. If you lose the fight, you will be imprisoned for a long time”.

Of note, Mr Kerdphol on Monday posted a notice of gratitude to fellow lawyer Phakin Jantira, based in Phuket Town, who has been assisting Mr Kerdphol and Mr Aroon’s family.

“Thank you to my handsome brother, Attorney Phakin Phkin Jantira of Phuket Town. who come together to make merit to help those who have been bullied,” he wrote.

The utter stupidity inherent in these preposterous people is the ridiculous fact that they evidently think their absurdity is rooted in some credibility. Their idiocy is that of the puerile, the stunted child living in a world of make believe where life can be fantasy and if you weave fantastic stories they might come true.

Dumbest, most childish people on the planet.

Frankly, their very existence is an insult to evolution.
