Pattaya Mayor plans to make Pattaya a world class tourist city like Dubai, Singapore,

The Pattaya Mayor plans to make Pattaya a world class tourist city on par with top cities in the world like Dubai, Singapore, and Miami after Covid-19 as part of the Eastern Economic Corridor project.

The Pattaya City Mayor Sonthaya Khunplume told The Pattaya News, “The NEO Pattaya or New Pattaya plan is part of the EEC (Economic Eastern Corridor) plan which is supporting economic development, community engagement, culture, and the environment.”

“After Covid -19 subsides around the globe and tourism resumes, we expect more quality domestic tourists which will generate more income. This will be along with foreign tourists returning, however, we are immediately focused on driving quality domestic tourists.” The Mayor continued.

“We are improving Pattaya to be a better place to work, and a place to live.”

“We will use city models from Singapore, Dubai and Miami as they are beach cities like Pattaya on how to be a world class tourist city with a buzzing nightlife, family activities, and a diverse economy.”

“We are also developing and improving the ‘Old Town Naklua’ market, Koh Larn, the Bali Hai Pier, Khao Thap Phraya, Walking Street, Pattaya Beach Walk, and Jomtien Beach which are in the EEC plan.”

The Pattaya News notes that the plans for this project are big, including a monorail, high-speed train, skywalk, cruise ship terminal, a refurbished and improved Walking Street, making the city a centerpiece for film and culture, and much more. All these plans had begun before Covid-19.

A major focus of the project is to diversify the economy which before depended on tourism for about 80 percent of the GDP in Pattaya. The city would like to bring that to around 60 percent by focusing on MICE, sports events, film events, and other business pursuits.

Pattaya has a looooong way to go. Seriously in need of hiding utility lines and a uniform code for storefronts and signage.
    What a dump.

Start off with a megaCasino. Then watch the investment dollars roll in. I think Macau would be a more accurate model for Pattaya than Dubai.

Probably not far off the mark, although a lot of investment baht would probably roll in, too.

Well if it makes you feel any better spinner, Tahitian Queen- the one surviving place in Pattaya from RnR days- has not closed down as was reported. It is re-opening in April.
See, Pattaya really cares about it's heritage. Sin City always rolls on.

Given the city is unique in the world in that it has no municipal omnibus network whatsoever, has not a single metred taxi that operates to a meter, has no network of pavements of a uniform height for longer than 30 metres without a dropped kerb, broken slab,concrete/metal post, lounging motorcy taxi drivers sitting on plastic seats or simply a lump of broken concrete to obstruct safe passage, has not a functioning sewage/drainage system, operates a dual pricing system based on ethnicity and race and plays host to an indigenous people who think a red traffic light on a light controlled pedestrian crossing is a negotiable sign, I rather think the dreams of this latest iteration of the Kunpleume dynasty have some way to go before coming to fruition.
They really are quite the most preposterous people with the daftest of ideas. It would take billions of baht and ten years to bring Pattaya to the standard of Singapore 40 years ago never mind in the past decade.
The problem with these boys is that none of them walk or use public transport anywhere. They truly are divorced from reality.

But making it a centrepiece for film and culture??? It has no theatre, the films released are Hollywood pap or Thai pap and the last time the regional bridge club held a tournament in Pattaya they were busted for suspected gambling because the local city hall wallah thought the points recorded in a rubber represented dollars. And they were all held overnight in the police station including an 80 year old Dutch woman. It took a hiso Thai to come down from BKK to explain things but even then they still got fined for playing cards with a deck not sealed under a law dating back to 1948.

One wonders just what it is they see when they travel to proper countries.

This was supposed to have been the plan from about 12 years ago. As I recall the current king and Thakin, business partners, planned exactly the same thing.

It's actually re-opening this Friday and was never closed on a permanent basis in the first place.

Yes, fwiw there were whispers to that effect long ago, with resistance from the then powers.

I can only say it was about 12 years ago that I first read about it. May be you care to show us that it was planned waaay longer than that?

    Show you?

How would I 'show you' what was being planned 20+ years ago?

All I can tell you is it was ... much the same.

Meanwhile, are they repaving the path next to Beach Rd right now by any chance?

It seems like they've been doing that since at least 1990, and most likely well before that.

The Eastern Seaboard Development Programme initiated in 1982 was the forerunner of the current " corridor" plans and explains why the Japanese are so well entrenched in the region given they provided Thailand with the soft loans to set things going.

The cooling zephyrs wafting onshore and the cleaner air while living in the security of an upscale development with direct beach access in a neighbourhood that was principally residential but offered easy access to several modern malls, fine hotels and their restaurants, a varied selection of cuisines and an easy going ambiance but was within easy commuting distance to BKK. But we both increasingly miss Bangkok, and Europe even more so perhaps time to leave.
In truth the whole of Thailand suffers from the deficiencies I have outlined but citing Pattaya as worse than any other because of them is stupid.

Pattaya is just Thailand minus the shallow artifice of fake Buddhism, but plus the honesty of traditional Thai prostitution. What is so wrong with that? Many a fortune been made and lost there.
Touchingly, it is also one of the most charitable places I know..
