Elderly American expat falls to death from eighth floor condo in Pattaya

An American expat fell to his death from the 8th floor at a condominium in the Pattaya area last night (February 1st).

Lieutenant Colonel Arnan Mahakitaussawakun of the Pattaya City Police was notified of the incident at 10:00 P.M. at a condominium in Soi Buakhao.

Police, emergency responders and The Pattaya News arrived at the scene to find the body of the American expat, 88, on the ground. (The Pattaya News is withholding his name pending embassy and his family’s notification.)

A note with his room number was found on his body. Police went to the room on the 8th floor after discovering the note where the man had left his passport and other information behind for law enforcement. A security guard told police that he saw the man’s body on the ground and called authorities while he was patrolling but did not hear the initial fall.

At this stage, Pattaya police believe that the man likely took his life due to personal problems. However, police are continuing their investigation.

If you or someone you know is feeling depressed please reach out for help. The Pattaya News suggests the Samaritans of Thailand which can be reached here:

If a merkin falls from a pattaya balcony while all the security guards are asleep does he make any noise when he hits the ground?

Jesus H. Christ, just let it all out Tootie. How much alcohol have you consumed today? Its just midday as well.

Poor old dead American. 88 and living alone in a small condo on Soi Buakhao, a true shithole. Feel for the old fart. RIP, hopefully in a better place.

its very sad when the press publish photos from the living quarters of the elderly farang that have committed suicide, murdered their wives or been murdered by their wives.

they are nearly always squalid, disorganised and cluttered and the sight of dozens of officials nosing around, taking photos to share only adds to the poignancy of the situation.

poor old guy. approaching 90, bridges to his homeland burnt, nothing to look forward to, probably sick and with no access to health care.

at least it would have been a quick death once he hit the ground.

90? Why feel sorry for him unless you are family? The codger had a long life most likely longer than many of us.

A good innings and he ended it on his own terms, hopefully having lived the latter part of his life in a manner that most of his peers could only dream of.

He was 88 years old and felt he had had enough. So be it.

The only sad part of this story, judging by the photos, he had no one to check in on him and keep his room clean.

Gods, help us all to have someone to care for us at that age.

Indeed. I hope I go out that late.

That was about the time that my grandfather had had enough. I talked to him in the old folks home. He told me that all his friends were dead as well as his wife. He was done. I do not want to get to that place.

Let me die in my sleep like my 78-year-old gramp on the other side of my family.

Hats off to the old fella to still be batting his wicket in sin city right up to the pearly gates at 88. And a what an exit. Take no prisoners. No deathbed god-grumbling here.

Butter wouldn't melt when St Peter whips out the score sheet for a final tally

    Respect

RIP (Rump-pumpy In Paradise) good sir

one day we may be that age, alone, depressed, ill and impoverished. none of us can know what the future holds.

however it happened, either through bad luck, bad planning or maybe just it just all crept up on him, he found himself in a situation with no future and nowhere to go. if ever there was a case for feeling sympathy for someone, then it would be someone in a desperate situation like that.

thailand is a hard place for non-thais on their own with no resources and needing assistance.

as a matter of interest, what would the american embassy have done if he had contacted them asking for some kind of help?

i am pretty sure the british embassy would have told one of their citizens in a similar situation to fxck off.

Not sure what the embassy situation was with the Trumpsters in charge, but in the past, at least in Chiang Mai, there was a local group who worked with the consulate to repatriate elderly people and get them into elder care facilities in the US.

But probably a few good stories to tell if he was still cranking around sin city right up to the final bell at a fair old innings of 88

    thanks.

i suppose if he had reached out to the us community in pattaya he might have obtained some help.

looks like he was a loner, and like hallejulah said, ended it on his own terms.

    very sad nevertheless.

I'll jump well before 90. I'm banking on 20 years after retirement max. Would prefer less.

I've also owned that same kettle before.

Dont jump. Go to the hardware store , pick up a propane heater. Find a small room , turn it on and find a comfortable chair.

These gruesome suicides are all the more sad and disturbing. You will feel a sudden shock of pain when you jump.

I was in a car accident. I got blind sided head on. Just a mild concussion and a leg injury. People said huh well you probably didn't feel anything. Like fuck I didn't. I felt it all for those seconds. I don't think jumping would be any different. You will feel it. Even for a second

I did hear the Helium asphyxiation is growing popular. That would be a bit funny if they caught you before you popped your clogs.

I think I read that Koreans do the same with a charcoal grill.

Stop projecting Tax, you don’t know anything of his situation and you sure as heck wouldn’t help any living stranger who might ask for help.
